Pluto may have been demoted to a dwarf planet in 2006, but that hasn’t stopped astronomers from studying this intriguing plutoid. NASA recently announced the discovery of a fourth moon, be it a “mini-moon,” circling the former planet. Dubbed “P4” for the time being, the hunt is on for an appropriate name.
The practice of naming planets after gods and goddesses can be traced back to the Babylonians, but it is the naming conventions of the Romans that we continue to refer to today. The International Astronomical Union has established a set of guidelines for planetary nomenclature that is monitored by a group of scientists.
Pluto’s name comes from a lovely and unlikely source. Fueled by a passion for classical mythology and astronomy, Venetia Burney, an eleven-year-old schoolgirl from Oxford, England, proposed the name Pluto to her grandfather (a librarian at the Bodleian Library at Oxford University) who in turn passed it on to astronomers at the Lowell Observatory. From a list of three prospective names, Venetia’s suggestion won out. For her achievement, Venetia’s grandfather rewarded her with five pounds.
Of the now four moons circling Pluto, Charon is the largest. The name is a derivation of the Greek Kharon – the ferryman of the dead over the river Styx. Charon is closely associated with the god Hades, whom the Romans link with Pluto.
The two remaining moons, Nix and Hydra are named in part for their initials NH, a reference to the New Horizons robotic spacecraft mission; or perhaps the names suggest the watchful eye the two keep over Pluto.
Nix is derived from the Greek Nyx, the goddess of darkness and night, and mother of Charon. The alternate spelling (replacing the y with an i) is to avoid confusion with the asteroid called 3908 Nyx.
Hydra is named for the nine-headed Lernaean beast who battled, and was eventually slain by, Hercules in Greek mythology.
In keeping with tradition, from what figure of Greek mythology should this newly discovered satellite be named? Offer your suggestion below.
Hypnos
I don’t know how you can have Pluto and Charon without it.
Hm… I’ve had quite an interest to Mythology as well as that Venetia Burney (Only, I’m just 12.)
I’d like to propose the name “Lethe”. Which is one of the rivers in the Underworld, which the dead bathe in so that may ‘be cleansed of their mortal memories” and be reborn or resurrected. If my memory does not fail me, “Lethe” means concealment. To “conceal” something is to hide it, and this 4th moon has only been discovered far later than the other 3 moons. So I suppose in some way, you could say “P4″ was in ‘hiding’.
Persephone, of course.
I would name it as ‘Plumoon”
I say “Erebos.” It fits right in with the Roman Mythological naming of the moons brothers and sisters. Erebos, the Roman god and personification of Darkness, may also be a fitting name, given that the moon has just been discovered, way out in the dark regions of the Solar System.
What about Dis?
Styx after the river styx
Hun-Came (chief Mayan death god)
i suggest it should be named after osiris, the Egyptians’ gods.Osiris is the
god of the
underworld
and the
afterlife.
Husband of
Isis.
Kerberos, the guardian to the gates of the underworld.
Cerberus
Cerberus would be an appropriate name for the newly discovered satellite of Pluto.
Soteria, personification of safety and the deliverance from harm. This name is fitting because this moon is so far away from the sun and Earth, thus personifying safety and distance from the harmful effects of our part of the solar system.
I think we should name it :Apollonius
My reasons:
He was Greek
He was an astronomer
The name implies Greek mythology i.e APOLLO
It sounds like a related word to PLUTO!
And among geometers he truly stands out as a god!!
hope you are convinced.
Viduus – Roman god who separated the soul and the body after death.
To keep with the whole Pluto theme.
I’m probably not the first to suggest this, but what about “Cerberus” – the three headed dog that guarded the gates of hell.
Fitting – especially if it’s Pluto’s outermost moon.
or Erebus !
I think Persephone would be a suiting name given the theme of the Underworld surrounding Pluto.
i may have not spelled the name right. the name came from a greek story in which there was a handsome and then he fell in love with himself when looking at a clear spring water pond and so he died because he did nothing but look at himself. and so a goddess turned him into a flower, but then the pond talked to the goddess and became a saltwater pond because it told the goddess that in the man’s eyes she saw herself
IM ALSO THE FIRST ONE
I think Persephone would be an obvious choice.
Plata should be called that because pluto has gained the new planet and not neptune has gained it and plus pata is close to pluto
sorry what i wrote before but plata should be the name because pluto has gained the planet and plata is closed to pluto the name
vote for my name
Wow is this true?
Because I’m really into space and I don’t see the 4th moon anyways.
Sorry that would be anywhere =D
I think to keep up with the tradition of naming Pluto’s moons with mythological characters, I give the name Cerberus, the three-headed-dog which guards the gate of the underworld.
Cerberus, the three-headed-dog that guards the gate of the underworld
sugest venpound whch cumz frm venetia & 5pound she receive frm his grndpa!!
AETHER was “the son of Erebus and Nyx. He is the personification
of the space, the upper sky, and heaven, and is the elemental
god of the ‘Bright, Glowing, Upper Air.’ He is the pure upper
air that the gods breathe, as opposed to the normal air
mortals breathe.”
Info from Wikipedia
Persephone, after the wife of Hades.
Cerberus, guardian of Pluto’s domain.
I reckon it should be called “Lunara” as Luna means moon and why I say Lunara because the style of newly foundd objects have very odd names.
I suggest either:
Persephone- The women of which was stolen away by Hades
Minos- For the King who has been deemed to pass judgement to the tortured souls in Hades
Cerberus: For the Three-headed beast that guarded the gates of the Underworld .
Elysium: For the fields of hero’s and the triumphant souls who dwell within the underworld.
It should be named “Stormfront.”
The name can be “Zeus”
i suggest the name of fourth moon of pluto “xyna”
i derived it from ‘xana’. The origin of the Asturian word xana is unclear, though some scholars see it as a derivation from the Latin name for the goddess Diana.
The two remaining moons, Nix and Hydra are named in part for their initials NH, a reference to the New Horizons robotic spacecraft mission; or perhaps the names suggest the watchful eye the two keep over Pluto.
is correct
Cerberus? It’s already the name of an asteroid, a constellation and an albedo feature (dark spot) on Mars, but it seems appropriate enough.
The name “Arges” would be an intriguing name for a moon, as it is the third and brightest cyclopes child of Gaia.
Styx would be cool, to rhyme with Nix and to keep the relation to Charon. Or perhaps Cerberus if that isn’t already a name of a star. Though Cerberus is a powerful name and sounds more appropriate for a planet…perhaps with three moons.
Oneiroi would be nice, I think.
Cerberus
Pluto is named for the God of the underworld. If its moons are named after the ferryman of the underworld, the goddess of darkness and night (two thing often associated with death and the underworld), and the fearsome Hydra it its seems obvious to me that he next moon would be named Cerberus.
In Greek mythology he is the three headed dog that guards the underworld linking him to both Pluto and Charon, and vaguely to Nix as well. He also ties Hydra better in with the others as slaying the Hydra was Hercules’ second task and capturing Cerberus alive was his twelfth task.
Ceres
Why not call it Cerberus after the three headed dog that guards the entrance to the underworld, or Lethe, Styx, Cocytus, Phlegethon, or Acheron, the five rivers of the underworld. Or maybe Erebus, the father of Charon.
Varonus, Varunus, Varunansh, Varunkhand, Varuni,
as in Hindu ancient science not mythology this planet was already discovered and was named Varun.. the moon, it’s part can be named accortdingly. In the order in the above line. Just for information all the boundries of the universe was already known to Indian seers(read scientists and thinkers), we already have huge traesure of astrophysical, astronomical and astrological knowledge that was discoevered whn there was no human in other parts of world or was primitive only.
I think christening a Hindu name which was named some 3-4000 yrs back would do some justice and also would be novelty to the nomenclature till now by NASA.
The sanskrit name has also been greekened by me already..
tc
I think this new moon should be called Furrina.
As Pluto was downgraded from a mighty planet to a dwarf, I thought Furrina would be appropriate as she was once highly regarded, but now scientists can’t even decide what role she played.
She is all but forgotten.
Some suggest she was a water goddess, others suggest theft and a few suggest she was similar to the furies. For a moon surrounding an icy planet who had its title stolen from it. Water, theft and anger seem appropriate.
I think that by naming her as one of the moons we would be bringing a rightful God, and a rightful planet, back into the limelight.
‘Deimos’ means terror in Greek mythology. I think it’s a suitable name.
It’s obvious. Cerberus.
CERBERUS the three-headed dog seems a natural following choice. Or PROSERPINA, Pluto’s wife, rarely seen by us mortals on Earth.
In the universe many nebulas lived we are not recognised ,isugest so easy recoginised it P4 .T.Q.
Persephone. She was his Hades’ wife and it seems appropriate for one of his moons to be named for her
Cerberus.
Pluto and its moons are named after darkness and death. Pluto is the greek god Hades (or at least, that’s the common consensus) was both grandson and great grandson (since Gaia and Uranus were both mother and son and wife and husband) of Gaia (Earth), Nyx is the representation of the Night, Charon (Kharon) is the ferryman of the dead over the river Styx, and Hydra is the daughter of Typhon (the most deadly monster of Greek mythology, often called “Father of all monsters”, last son of Gaia) and Echidna (“Mother of All Monsters”).
So, Hydra is a cousin in a 2nd degree of Hades (the planet Pluto) and Nyx (the moon Nix) is the great grand aunt of Hades and grand aunt of Hydra. Family relation ends there.
Kharon (the moon Charon) is the ferryman of the dead.
It cannot be Erebus (Erebos), because it did not have a body. Same with Tartarus (Tartaros).
If it was called Acheron (Akheron), it should have its place exchanged with Charon. It cannot be either. Same goes with Cerberus (Kerberos) and Hermes Chthonius (Khthonios).
Hecate (Hekate), the goddess of magic, necromancy and the haunting ghosts of the dead. She who issued forth from the underworld with a train of torch-bearing Lampades, demonic Lamiae, ghosts and hell-hounds. Hecate was the minister of Persephone. That would be an interesting name.
Hypnus (Hypnos), the god of sleep who dwelt in a silent realm on the borders of Hades. He issued forth from the underworld with his mother Nyx the Night. That’s a very interesting name too.
Lethe, the goddess of the underworld river of oblivion. The souls of the dead tasted her waters to forget their former lives. That too is a great name.
I would propose the name “Lethe”, since it is between Hydra (the killing monster) and Nix (the night the dead have to go through), thus allowing the ones who pass from life to death to drink from the waters of oblivion before being ferried by Charon to the house of Pluto.
cerberus the three headed dog of pluto
They should call it págos which is ice in greek!
call it cerberus
“Proserpina” the neglected wife of Pluto!
Furthermore: If there are more moons around Pluto, then I suggest the contingency plan to name them: a) Orphnaeus [Orphnæus], b) Aethon [Æthon], c) Nycteus and d) Alastor, … after the dark horses of Pluto.
Pluto/Hades was the god of the underworld, while Thanatos was the actual god of death. The relationship is clear.
maybe they should call it Persephone
I suggest naming the moon P4 as “Cerberus” after the 3 headed guard dog of the Underworld
or maybe cerberus
In Greek mythology, Erebus ( /ˈɛrəbəs/), also Erebos (Ancient Greek: Ἔρεβος, “deep darkness, shadow”), was the son of a primordial god, Chaos, and represented the personification of darkness.
Erebus married his sister Nyx (goddess of the night) and their offspring include: Aether, Cer, Hemera, Charon, the Hesperides, Hypnos, the Moirae, Momus, Nemesis, Oneiroi, Phlegethon, Styx, and Thanatos.
In Greek literature the name Erebus is also used to refer to a region of the Underworld where the dead had to pass immediately after dying, and is sometimes used interchangeably with Tartarus.
How about the Greek God “Lêthô”, or “Lanthanô”, or “Lelathon”, meaning “to escape notice,” “move unseen” or “go unobserved.” He was the younger Titan god of air and a stealthy hunter. Lêthô seems like the most appropriate moniker since it has been orbiting Pluto for so long and despite all the advancements in our planet & star searching methods, it has not been detected until now. Lêthô would be my first choice since it’s short & sweet. It’s not too plain (with all those accents) but simple, and a name people will remember easily.
Wray Dumont
Officially call this moon ATTAKISTAN, because It will make me happy, and there are no other celestial objects that are named with humor in mind.
I suggest the name: Mors.
In ancient Roman myth, Mors is the personification of ‘Death’ equivalent to the Greek Thánatos.
In Roman Mythology, Mors is shown as a servant to Pluto, ending the life of a person after the thread of their life has been cut and escorting the dead person’s soul, or shade, down to the underworld’s gate.
As a small moon of Pluto, P4 (Mors) looks like a servant to Pluto.
Lares
Roman guardian spirit
For P4 (4th moon of Pluto) I’d kindly recommend the name : STYX
cheezburger – the greek god of hungry felines
Name the moon after Pluto’s wife: Proserpina.
harpy
HYPNUS (Hypnos) – The god of sleep who dwelt in a silent realm on the borders of Hades. He issued forth from the underworld with his mother Nyx the Night.
the 4th moon of Pluto should be named..Promes or Promys after Prometheus…the Titan.
in keeping with greek mythology: Chaos ….OR AmphicTyonis (which you surely could shorten…..
If for fun : Mickey
I think it should be named tartarus the darkest pit I the underworld were merders go and the 1000 pieces of the titan god Kronos lay.
How about “Venetia?”
Seriously though, why not suggest a name based on some characteristic of this newly discovered “moonlet?”
The article tells us nothing of the sort.
How about Luna or Chandra.
i suggest “hyperion ..
Cerberus, the guardian of Hades, would be appropriate.
Charon
Charon is an alternate name for Styx, but sounds a little less ominous. It stays with the mythological theme, but is admittedly the name of an object instead of a god or creature.
It should be called Helots, an unfree population group that formed the main population of Laconiaa (capital Sparta). These people were tied to the land, as this moon it to pluto.
It is wrong to say that naming of planets and other celestial objects traced back to Babylonians. Scientists, world-wide, do not recognise the Astronomical contributions made by Hindus. Let us not forget Aryabhatta and Bhaskara.
Why not they mention Hindus while they quote Greeks and Romans? The entire solar system, even the galaxies are named after Hindu Gods and Godesses by the Hindus several centuries before.
Persephone
tros iv
Since the largest moon is named after Charon, the ferryman transporting the souls of the deceased to the land of the dead, why not name this one Atropos, after the Moirae who cut a person’s life-thread when their time was up, and chose how they died?
Alternatively they could rename Nix and Hydra, and have all three outer moons named after the three Moirae. From inner to outer:
Nix = Clotho, the spinner of the life-thread
P4 = Lachesis, who measured the life-thread
Hydra = Atropos, the cutter of the life-thread
But I guess that’s less likely to happen
Souda or Suda. It means “fortress” or “stronghold”. Sounds good to me! It’s an ancient encyclopedia from sometime in the 10th century, which Homer and quite a few others are noted on. Should be Greek enough.
Name the 4th moon “Cateye”
Persephone
hecate, goddess or hidden wisdom, change (like planet to dwarf planet) and darkness would be a great addition to the moons of pluto
Mania, goodess of the dead
sorry, I meant goddess
Telemachus
In Greek mythology Telemachus was the son of Odysseus in Homer’s Odyssey. Telemachus’ name means “far from battle” and it is fitting that this new moon be named as such in this time when there are so many battles being fought on planet Earth and this new moon is so far away.
or Naenia, goddess of funerals
Thor??
MAKARIA
Death. A daughter of Haides. And a proverb : `Go to blessedness’, instead of go to misery and utter destruction. Or `Go to blessedness’ is said by euphemism. Since even the dead are called `blessed ones.’”
(Greek) Hephasstus (Roman) Vulcan God of Fire
Because Charon, Hydra, Pluto, and Nyx are all somewhat related to darkness, death, and the underworld, I’d suggest two names in keeping with the Hades motif. The first is Persephone, the unwilling wife of Hades whose absence from the earth four months a year brings winter. Alternatively, Cerberus would also be appropriate as the three-headed dog who keeps watch over the gates of the underworld.
Heracle would be nice as two moons show a Mother-Son relationship (Nyx and Charon), Heracle would be nice as it would give a Slayer-Slain relationship (Heracle and Hydra).
In keeping with the underworld theme, I would think Persephone might work.
Priam – was the King of Troy during Trojan War, and the youngest son of Laomedon (in Greek Mythology).
In keeping with the Greek/Roman tradition, I think the satellite should be named Athena who was the goddess of wisdom/knowledge. She was the daughter of Zeus (Jupiter) and I don’t think her name is taken. Her roman counterpart is called Minerva, which is also a very apt name.
Thank-yoy
In keeping with the Greek/Roman tradition, I think the satellite should be named Athena who was the goddess of wisdom/knowledge. She was the daughter of Zeus (Jupiter)
Erebus
i think it should b Cerberus, protector of the underworld.
MORPHEUS was the leader of the Oneiroi, the gods or spirits (daimones) of dreams. He manifested himself in the dreams of kings and rulers in the likeness of men as a messenger of the gods.
Morpheus was probably equated with the Dream-Spirit which Zeus sent to visit Agamemnon in the Iliad (see the Oneiroi page).
Perhaps it could be named Hades, or maybe Styx, to keep with tradition, but Erebos is also an option.
Persephone (queen of the Underworld)…:)
As this moon is very small (dubbed mini-moon), and around a very small “former planet”, I propose the name “Aiolos”, which in Greek mythology means quick moving, and nimble! Thanks! Bob
What about Anemoi? God of the cold north wind. Cant get much colder than the furthest point away from the sun but still in our solar system.
“Cerebrus”- The mythological 3-headed dog guarding the gate of Hades.
Two possibilities:
“Veneratio” – reputed to be the son of Pluto without a mother.
“Avernus” – a gate of the underworld
Name it Nox for the Roman counterpart to the Greek Nyx.
the greek god of death son of nix and brother of sleep
try Latin words like Magister
Cerberus, after the mighty guardian of Pluto’s domain.
As old deities are more or less successfully replaced by new gods, let us give it the name “MONEY”, a deity of modern days whom many revere nowadays.
In keeping with the Plutonian (Hades) nomenclature and makeup, why not Minos? He was the king of Crete who eventually became one of the three judges of death.
Or how about Virgil? According to Edith Hamilton, he’s the Roman poet who described Hades with the most lurid zest.
LETHE
The goddess of the underworld river of oblivion. The souls of the dead tasted her waters to forget their former lives.
KEUTHONYMOS
A mysterious underworld demon. He was the father of Hades cattleman Menoetes.
MINTHE
An underworld nymph. She was turned to dust by Persephone; her remains were then turned into a mint plant by the god Hades, who loved her.
Cerberus
It should be named after the
scientist who discovered it.-
Persephone.
I recomend the name of “Orcus”.
Orcus has long been associated with death and the underworld, worshipped in remote or rural areas and means “the land of the dead”.
Galatea
I think the new moon shud be called Pluto Minor since it is a moon beside Pluto. This would show people how the moon is small.
Hypnos would have been cool. Pity we already gave that one to an asteroid. Maybe take a leaf from the book of Nix and call it Hipnos?
Cerberus is fitting if it’s not being used. I personally prefer objects consistently being named after Greek/Roman mythology.
I’ve never understood the naming of Quaoar.
Charon was the ferryman across the river Acheron, not the river Styx. Common mistake. I think I’d suggest the name “Acheron” for the moon, so it could be next to Charon and maybe *then* people will stop confusing the two.
What do you think? It goes with the Underworld theme that already exists, with the personification of darkness (Nyx), the ferryman (Charon), and the keeper of the dead (Hades/Pluto). Hydra was a guardian to the entrance of the Underworld at the lake of Lerna.
In sticking with the underworld theme, I’d have to suggest “Cerberus”, the three headed dog guarding the gates of the underworld and coincidentally the sibling of the Hydra. Hopefully they haven’t already named some other celestial body the same.
Is there already something called Cerberus?
I vote for “Cerberus” (the three-headed guard dog of the gates to the Underworld) to go with the multi-headed theme of Hydra and the more general Underworld theme of Pluto and Charon and Nix.
Since it’s got kind of a dark theme going on there, I think it should be something like “Keres”- After the Fates of Death.
Or maybe even after Erebos, primordial god of darkness and consort of Nyx.
Too easy – it should be named “Hypnos”: the god of sleep. Nyx is the mother of Hypnos. If they find another moon, or a nearby dwarf-planet, they could name it “Thanatos” – the twin of Hypnos.
Proserpina or Persephone, the first being Roman and the second Greek. Persephone is the goddess of the underworld held captive by Hades(Pluto), just as moons are held captive by their planet’s gravitational field.
Morpheus – God of sleep/dreams
I’m not sure how the Hydra got in to the mix but I thought Cerberus would be the obvious connection.
Just because the universe is chaotic is no reason not to be orderly.
Why not Obol? (Or a variation thereof.) If the moon is so tiny, perhaps it is just a “coin” in the cosmos.
I think the new moon should be named Erebos because He is the god of darkness and shadow and pluto means Hades and he is God of darkness.
Cerberus
Why not call it Hades? Since that eara seems to be named after things he is associated with, we should put him in thier.
Defenitely ‘Persehone’, after Hade’s wife.
I think the new moon should be “Cerberus”.
“Kore” Another name for Persephone who was abducted by Pluto and brought to the underworld.
I’ve a question… How much of this actually helps in determining the name of this moon?
May I suggest Nike, the Greek goddess of victory and diving?
Persephone should be next to lighten the evil around Pluto. Although her story is depressing it has a hopeful beginning with the creation of spring.
Lex, as in Latin for law.
Why not Proserpina? That’s the name of Pluto’s wife in Roman mythology. Or how about the Greek version, Persephone?
Minerva
Ctesippus – one of the wooers of Odysseus. And like the planet Pluto who’s first two letters represent Percival Lowell. The first 2 letters of Ctesippus; for Clyde Tombaugh. Who’s cremated remains are aboard New Horizons which will arrive near Pluto in July, 2015.
Image
Persephone:
It should be Persephone, without a doubt. Persephone was innocent and abducted. The body was just discovered and probably “abducted” by Pluto’s gravity. It’s association with spring represent’s NASA’s new beginning. Besides, Pluto needs a queen.
The moon should be named Allecto, one of the three furies. The names is fitting because her mother is Nyx and her father is Tartarus, or Erebus. Some sources also say that Allecto could be the daughter of Pluto, or Hades, and Persephone. Allecto’s name means endless and unceasing and was charged, along with her two sisters, with a responsibility to maintain order using punishment in the Underworld. Comment if you think Allecto should be the name of Pluto’s fourth moon.
Bes, the Egyptian god of dwarves
I like Maria Mediarito’s suggestion.
Since Cerberus has been used so frequently already, maybe Fluffy, like the 3 headed dog in Harry Potter.
Styx, Cerberus, Lethe, Cocytus (also spelled Kokytos), Asphodel, Proserpina (also known as Persephone, or Kore), Alecto, Megaera, Tisiphone, Thanatos… There are dozens of names associated with the Underworld in Greco-Roman mythology.
Let’s just call the damn thing Bob.
They should call the 4th moon on pluto “Myr”.
Umbreon.
After the coolest dark type Pokemon ever!
call it medusa! there’s not much character around more terrifying than her ..
Most of my suggestions are taken, but I don’t think this is suggested yet. This is not really keeping up with the underworld theme, but is on par with the death theme: MORTA (ATROPOS in Greek), one of the three goddess of fate that cut the string of life, thus bringing death.
“Prosepina”, Pluto’s wife.
Does it have to be from greek or roman mythology? What about Jangofett or Chewbaca?
Persephone, because she is Hades’ (Pluto’s) wife. Therefore, it would be right for Pluto to have a moon named “Persephone”.
But Hypnos, is also a good name. Because I think, I’m not really sure, he is the god of sleep. So, if they discover a 5th moon, then they could name that 5th moon “Hypnos.”
But overall in conclusion, I think Persephone would be a good name for the 4th moon. Because it was believed that when Hades’ (Pluto’s) wife was near, he would usually be calmer. So Persephone should probably be the name!
Proserpina — Pluto’s wife and the goddess of Springtime
Thanatos. As described by Wikipedia, this god was “often referred to but rarely appearing in person”. With that kind of description it seems to characterize this moon that we can’t often see.
> Eesgooshee on July 25, 2011 at 2:00 am

> Cerberus? It’s already the name of an asteroid, a constellation and an albedo feature (dark spot) on Mars, but it seems appropriate enough.
A constellation called Cerberus? There is no such thing! Look up the list of 88 constellation names…
How about Obama!
it should defenetly be Persuas
Call it Cerberus. Duh.
Cyclotrode – after the mythological cryogenic demon.
Vigo
The Scourge of Carpathia and the Sorrow of Moldavia.
pluto+
As in, it should be named pluto+ ala google+
Let’s keep it simple and call it Bob, or Jane
Clotho-weaving time as we see it, whether it be beginning or end, this planet is necessity of life. is this moon older then the “first” moon discovered?? Psychology and weaving the most inner fabrics of our minds, we have to ask ourselves do we accept change through life and death or or do we stay in fear of our own hades and not accept a daughter of something right, our earth n moons?
Considering the fact that all of Pluto’s other moons are named after mythological beings related to the Greek afterlife, the most sensible names would be either Styx or Hades. The Styx being the river of lost dreams that Charon ferries the dead souls across, and Hades being Lord of the underworld.
hm.. can i ask what is the characteristic of that moon? and name it in accordance to its characteristic so as easy to identify since pluto has been demoted as a dwarf star or planet
bryx would be nice ^_^ it has no correlation i just thought what about bryx
Since I have a very rare genetic neurological disease called CEREBELLAR ATAXIA, I have chosen:
CERBERUS Κερβερος m Greek Mythology (Latinized)
Latinized form of the Greek Κερβερος (Kerberos), which possibly meant “demon of the pit”… [more]
Erobus since there is already a moon named after Nyx. Erobus and Nyx worked side by side
I agree with dlfkjdsalkfj – name it Bob. That’s my dog’s name. Or my other dog’s name, Basil.
i think the name of pluto has bee changed by the scientists.now the name is zenio pr ab 313 but i like the name pluto!
Meraura
Just to throw another option out there, Morpheus. He was the god of sleep and dreams, which is kind of fitting for a moon that is located so far away in the dark.
I suggest the name Morta after one of the three fates in Roman mythology. She was the one who cut the thread of life and chose the manner of a person’s death.
While not a figure, the river of forgetfulness itself would be an interesting choice: “Lethe”.
For a figure, “Megaera” (one of the Erinyes, ministers of justice) would be a nice alternative.
Thanatos.
Cerberus because he gaurdes the gates of hell, this moon being the outermost moon of pluto, it is gaurding pluto. also, charon is the ferryman of the river styx so its quite fitting (keeping the under world theme).
aidos kyneê cap of invisibility , a cyclops gift to use in battle, for pluto to use.
Agamemnon, for no particularly good reason. I just like it.
_aleph_
Lethe seems perfect to me. I would want to drink from it to forget my sorrows… maybe it will help Pluto forget His fall in rank.
if the planet is named pluto it’s only obvious that we should have a Mickey up there somewhere too.
I like Maria Mediarito’s suggestion too that’s why I said “Lethe”, and if she’s really 12 name a star after her.
Eshaal…..a heavenly flower
Persephone is a beautiful name. Lethe would also work well.
Of course, I’m thinking of aesthetics here.
POURF Moon
(P = Pluto * OUR = our * F = fourth Moon)
“P4″ sounds like a great name, as referring to Pluto’s fourth planet. Why not leave just leave it as P4?
Or as Lester said, Umbreon, lets go with Umbreon!
I like “Kage” personally because in Greek it means “shadow”.. Seeing that it’s overshadowed by it’s dwarf planet Pluto.
KrisKait Moon
I think you should either call it “Thanatos” or “Hymnos.” Thanatos is the Greek personification of death, and Hymnos is the Greek personification of sleep. They are the twin sons of Nyx.
quid pro quo = Thats what you get for taking away my planet status
Persephone (it’s also actual…on the phone)
Cerberus
i think it should be cerberus because pluto is a dog and cerberus is a
three-headed dog. it also goes with the whole underworld theme.
Far out! Debt Ceiling, Oui?
Tayven!!!
Batrachos (frog), fits very well with Styx and Charon.
Cerberus! Pick the cool one!
Definately Cerberus.
What about “Empousa”? The empousai were daemons (demons) of greek origin, having flaming hair and mismatched legs; one of bronze and the other of a donkey. Other than that, they looked like beautiful women. They would lure handsome young men into whatever sort of “lair” they had, where they would feast on the flesh of thier prey, drink their blood, and occasionally eat a bone or two.
I think this is just morbid and gloomy enough to continue the “Pluto” theme. If not, I believe the 4th moon should be named after a daemon or monster, rather than yet another god/goddess or whatnot.
While I like the “Persephone” idea (she is married to “Hades” -Greek, “Pluto” -Roman and a moon could be said to be married to its planet), I like the reasoning Maria Mediarito had for her suggestion “Lethe”. It’s up at the top if you want to read it. And whoever it was that suggested “Zues”, I would like to point out that we’ve already named a planet in our solar system “Zues”. “Jupiter” is the Roman name for “Zues”. I doubt they would want to call two celestial bodies in the same solar system the same person (even though it is a different name). Let’s save “Zues” for a supernova or a celestial storm or something that more represents the “King of the Gods” in mythology.
Just plain “Bill” sounds good to me.
Leetharous {Lee-tha-Roos} Because it sounds cool
Lethe. Or Asphodel.
P4 is good enough and it sounds nice who cares about the Greek people…..not like they are the ones that discovered it.
EREBUS
I mean EREBOS lol
While my own thought ,Cerberus seems most popular. Perhaps the most appropriate suggestion is Lethe.
@ Julia DuPree
Most excellent statement.
Mickey
Cerberus is good
Persephone is not good…
She’s not part of the underworld always….
Stick with Greek or Roman names, people.
How about Thanatos, god of death????
Scylla?
Then again it’d be better if another moon was named Charybdis….
I would like to suggest Acheron, which means “river of woe”. It is a river in the underworld. I also support Maria Mediarito’s suggestion “Lethe”.
I think that it is a pity the moons were not named, Donald, Mickey, and Goofy. I guess finding this fourth moon would have made good arguments of Minnie versus Daisy….
Very interesting and creative people have responded to this request. However, the suggestion of “Erebus” that was made earlier is certainly the most logical and appropriate choice. Given that Phobos and Deimos are moons for Mars and they are children of Aries (the Greek God Equivalent of Mars). Plus the other solar system examples that could be made here, a strong precedent has been set for this type of naming. The idea that Nix (Nyx was taken) should have her sibling and mate makes perfect sense. These two (2) gods share a lot with the underworld and Erebus will fit nicely into the mix of Pluto moons. Erebus should be elected as the name for this newly discovered moon, unless Stephen Colbert has his fan base vote for the moon to be named after him (lol).
I agree with Maria Mediarito. Lethe sounds to be a very fitting name for a satellite that has been in hiding so long.
Cerberus seems to be a reasonable conclusion, but Tartarus, being the dark prison in the underworld, would be my decision.
Or It could be named sisyphus forced to roll a huge bolder up a hill forever only to watch it fall back to where it started.
Proserpine (Persephone) would be nice seeing as she was the wife of Pluto. Although Cerberus is also a good name because it guards the gates of Hades.
we should name it the “korean”
Seems to me that they are on a rock band kick – Charon, Hydra, (Stevie) Nix, Styx, why not keep with that and rename P4 REO?
Gaea…creator of the earth and queen of living…..grandmother of the gods………or Hecate whom is the god of magic, witchcraft, and ghosts
Through I like Lethe, but consider these too.
Persephone, i have read a ton of mythology books so i should know.
:]
On second thought, add Lethe to good names…
Sisyphus. Meaning: “Sisyphean”, endless and unavailing, as labor or a task.
Once king of Corinth convicted to Hades by Zeus punished to roll a boulder uphill constant that ever tumbles downward once nearing the hill’s peak for revealing Zeus’ suspected identify. Sighted by chance, wrapped as a Eagle bearing a maiden away, abducted daughter of the river god Asopus. The stolen nymph daughter of Asopus, Aegina would become mother of Aeacus latter one of the three judges of Hades.
Sisyphus had also trick the god of death Thanatos sent by Zeus, however the king chained the deity thus prevented death to any individual until Ares intervene out of his own outrage when his foes survived death and war.
In his death in one tale also persuaded Persephone to return to the living world and scold his wife for not giving him a fit burial. But the king’s spirit refused to return back to the Underworld till he was forced back.
I like Cerberus, although I think that “Tantalus” would be an appropriate name as well since the fruit and drink of planethood is so near (physically in Uranus, and actually in the dwarf’s recently demoted status).
I, myself, have a interest in Greek Mythology (age of 11), and I would suggest the name none other like Thanatos. It is this name I would give the moon P4 because he was the personification of death, while Hades was the god the underworld where all the dead live the rest of their lives. Their is a relationship between the two beings. He delivers the dead to the Underworld sometimes and also when near, people can sense death or have some kind of death instinct. His Roman counterpart Mors would also be a name I would choose.
Chuck Norris, the bad ass pokemon
Shaq _liked_ this.
My vote also goes to Cerberus, the three-headed dog-guardian of the underworld, but also:
Morpheus, god of dreams, and son of Nyx (one of the current moons of Pluto);
Orpheus, the lyre player, the only mortal to enter the underworld and leave alive;
Eurydice, Orpheus’ wife, whom he came to bring out of the underworld and almost succeeded;
Sisyphus, a king sentenced to eternally roll a stone up a hill only to see it descend before he can push it to the top; another underworld character;
or
Thanatos = a Greek daemon of death.
If we want to keep with the Greek/Roman Underworld theme, I vote Cerberus or Lethe or Persephone.
On the other hand, maybe it’s time Pluto got a name that’s not so dark and depressing. Mickey would be pretty funny.
Cerberus duh!
Then again, there are lots of monsters/things in greek mythology
For anything other than Cerberus:
Kronos
Typhon
Chimera
Ladon
Kampe
Then again, maybe something else related to hell or something
Why the heck must it be related to hell anyway?
Or even greek mythology?
How about a demon’s name?
Lucifer, Leviathan, Baal, etc?
I agree with Maria Mediarito, who said,
“I’d like to propose the name ‘Lethe’. Which is one of the rivers in the Underworld, which the dead bathe in so that may ‘be cleansed of their mortal memories” and be reborn or resurrected. If my memory does not fail me, ‘Lethe’ means concealment. To ‘conceal’ something is to hide it, and this 4th moon has only been discovered far later than the other 3 moons. So I suppose in some way, you could say ‘P4′ was in ‘hiding’.”
Lol, I know a prodigy when I hear one.
I also liked the suggestion of “Elysium.”
Sisyphus
ceberus he is the three headed guard dog of the underworld to hades palace
Please do not accept Pluto’s controversial demotion as fact when it is not–it represents only one view in an ongoing debate. Only four percent of the IAU voted on this, and most are not planetary scientists. Their decision was immediately opposed in a formal petition of hundreds of professional astronomers led by New Horizons Principal Investigator Dr. Alan Stern. Dwarf planets are planets too!
Did anyone above me check if there isn’t already a thing named like his proposal? There is a Cerberus (asteroid 1865 Cerberus), however I can’t find Erebus (I could swear I heard of a planetoid by that name).
I think it shud either be named Cerberus, Lethe, or Persephone. ![]()
Those r the best ones so far.
i think its name should be morpheus, after the god of dreams
Name it
MIKROS
As for names, Proserpina or Persephone are great, as is Kore, another name for Persephone. Hecate is also a good choice, as she is the goddess of the crossroads between life and death. Kali is the Hindu underworld goddess.
How about Tartarus? That is where the bad dead go in mythology.
“ASTRONE”
Kub
i would name it “discover”
I like Thanatos. It ties in with Hades, death and the underworld and has a great sound to it.
Tartarus – It is a deep, gloomy place, a pit, or an abyss used as a dungeon of torment and suffering that resides beneath the underworld in Greek mythology
Nekyia – rite by which ghosts were called up and questioned about the future
Keroberus, the magical guardian of the Clow Cards.
or even “discovery” celebrating the last shuttle mission. it would also be in honer for those how died during the shuttle program and those who put their harts into the program!
Tartarus is my most fitting Greek Mythological choice. Because it’s below Hades, i.e. very very far away, & Fittingly past Charon, at least in Greek mythology
I love how so many people keep saying “it’s obvious”. How very arrogant.
Anyway, some suggestions:
Protogenoi (Primordial Gods who Are Responsible for the Universe):
Erebus: Embodiment of absolute darkness, and a realm in the Underworld. A place AND a god. Husband of Nyx, who is the goddess of night.
Tartarus: The great Hellpit, a place AND a god. He was the father of Typhon, by Gaia.
Lesser Known Gods:
Thanatos: God of death, a being who hates all, even the gods – whom he cannot kill.
Moros: God of doom, who deems when each and every thing shall die.
If anyone suggests “Kronos from Percy Jackson”, I’m going to keel over. That’s called Rick Riordan screwing up the myths. (IE, he combined Cronus, harvest Titan, with Chronos, the Protogenos of time. Completely unrelated.)
How bout Odysseus or Ulyssees becuase he is the hero of the most important work of literature in history, and because he was inside Hades (or pluto) at one time.
How bout Nico from Percy Jackson? He’s the son of Hades/Pluto =P
Electra the greek princess who’s brother murdered their father
Kratos
i say name it shalom (Hebrew)
which means peace, because the world needs so much peace right now,why not regonize the creator God almight ask him for the peace we need,SHALOM!!!!!!!
Phoebe would be a great name. And, in my heart Pluto will always be a planet!
Persephony. I’m surprised one of the moons hasn’t been named for her already. Look at how many lovers Jupiter had, and they’re all represented. I’m pretty sure most of us would agree, it would be fitting to have Pluto’s wife by his side.
KRONOS
Scythos, signifying death. (Real Word: Scythe)
There can be but one name for this “way out there” moon that has remained hidden all these years: Zaphod Beeblebrox or just Zaphod for short.
Zaphod Beeblebrox, of Hitchikers Guide to The Galaxy fame, was as I’m sure you all remember, the inventor of the Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster. Try and top that all you Greek Gods! But more to the point, like Pluto’s P4, Zaphod managed to hide his second head, most of the time. Actually we are naming P4 after that second head, which happens to have the same name as the first, but I digress. So there you go. What better appropriate characterization can there be?
how about chimera
I think it showed be named after Zues brother Ares
Persephone.
I don’t think it should have a name… i mean honestly, wouldn’t it be sorta cool if it could be the first recorded moon without a name?
besides, we name things because their ours, ask yourself s, do we own this?
and if it didn’t have a name than we could call it whatever we wanted.
if it is named most will be disappointed that the name was not of their choosing… so with great regret, they would name it anyone THEY please anyways. If they did listen to this we would all be outvoted no matter what.
So why name it?
keep it unnamed, it could be the most obvious thing ever!i!i!i!
not everything in mythology has a rightful name, not one that suites it to the full extent, so why give a name that will not be suitable.
i hope you stop naming things that aren’t yours and leave things as they are.
Definitely Erebus or Thanatos (Mors in Roman mythology). Either one would so totally fit into the theme.
Well i think Derstirus
Linkango!
why not herkermer?
Call it… Josho
I think that Alecto would be a good name, because the poet Virgil says that she is the daughter of Pluto.
I agree with the suggestion of ‘Cerberus.’ It has the Greek Mythology/Underworld connection, and Cerberus is a relatively minor being (not a god or anything like that) so I think it would be fitting for a small moon. And no, I am not saying this only because others suggested it. I think it would be a good name, that’s all. Plus Cerberus is one of my favorite figures from Greek Mythology.
Name it Donald
Oops. I just read Kalontas’s comment about the asteroid named Cerberus. (Thanks, Kalontas.) Ah, well. Something else, then. Hecate would be good. Or Persephone. or virtually any of the other things people have suggested here.
The name should be “Mare”
“Lethe”
Some people have already mentioned this name and I agree with them. It is a perfect name for this new moon.
Proserpina, Roman equivalent of Persephone
hypos
i mean hypnos
I think Anubis (the Egyptian) God of the dead would be a good name for the 4th moon
…Kratos.. lol
Pluto – a name given to Hades, under which he is identified by the Romans with Orcus.
Orcus – the ancient Roman god of the underworld, identified with the Greek Pluto, or Hades.
Orpheus – Greek Legend. a poet and musician, a son of Calliope, who followed his dead wife, Eurydice, to the underworld. By charming Hades(aka Pluto), he obtained permission to lead her away, provided he did not look back at her until they returned to Earth. But at the last moment he looked, and she was lost to him forever.
I say, name the moon, ORPHEUS
Call the new moon Persephone. Cause Since in Greek/Roman mythology, she was the goddess of the underworld and was the wife of Hades/Pluto, so it would be appropiate to call it that.
meltankos-i think its god of ice……….
lethe
there are in my family choice to any planet or moon named MINOTOR
I think Lethe is the best. Proserpina is second. I like it better than Persephone in order to keep the Mythology straight with Pluto. Cerberus has already been used. I thought I heard of something with the name Hypnos, but I could be wrong. I do like the name Mickey, but we need to have Lethe first, being the river, then if they discover a fifth moon, then we can slip a mickey into it
How about Fenris? He was the dog in Greek mythology that was tethered down and kept on breaking his tethers. Fenris said that he would only cooperate if someone would stick their hand in his mouth. Tiw (the god after which Tuesday is named) was the only brave enough to do it and he got his hand bitten off.
I think it should be named after the Greek God of Death; Thanatos, because the moon is most likely; far away and it’ll be very dark just like Thanatos. Plus, Thanatos was a son of the 2nd moon of Pluto, Nyx in Greek Mythology. So, I think it should be named after, Thanatos.
I think Calypso. She was a lesser greek goddess and her name means the concealer. Pluto is now a “lesser planet” (dwarf planet) and this moon has been hidden-or concealed because it was just found.
Typhon or Ladon
CERBERUS! OR PERSEPHONE!
I think the name Lethe is fitting from what I’ve read in some coments.
mystery
Lethe, the river of forgetfulness could be a possible choice or Cerberus, the three-headed guardian dog of the Underworld could also be good.
It should be Orcus- he was a god of the underworld. Orcus was basically the Roman god of punishing those who do not honor their oaths.
@ Greg Sippel
Whose cremated remains are on board?
Medusa
EREBOS AND YOU NO WHO THAT IS IF YOUVE READ THROUGH ALL THESE COMMENTS
@ Maria Mediarito
I agree with you, that would make a fantastic name
“Chronos” for the timing of the discovery. Since it was discover after Pluto was unclassified as a planet. Call it ”too late” of a discovery.
either athena persephone cerberus or VOLDERMORT!!
I think it should be called Anubis, after the Egyptian god of embalming.
Most possibly Styx after the river, or perhaps Tartarus (where bad people are punished), or Elysion.
it has been in hiding or waiting so it should be called al-mahdi or mahdi…..thanks
Plutoon maybe. Oh and Pluty.
SADAKO
perhaps just spaplumoon ( space pluto moon)
Maybe Proserpina, th latin godess who is Pluto’s wife. Or maybe Morpheus or Phantasos or Phobetor(dream gods) or Thanatos or Hypnos or Melinoe(ghost goddess)or Cerberus or Eurynomus (demon) or Lethe or Cocytus or Acheron or Pyriphlegethontus or Styx (rivers of Hades) and that’s it.
Well, it’s a small moon orbiting Pluto…
How about ‘Mini P’?
It rhymes with Mini Me and reminds us of small people.
Fun for everyone.
I think it should be Takuya
Or Pemious
I think HARRY POTTER should be it gwendylyn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cerberus because he guards the gates of the underworld and if people mention the three headed dog they may recognize it. Cerberus is pretty popular and important to the myths of the underworld.
Or Persephone or as the Romans would say Proserpine. She does revolve almost half her life in hades. Why not? It makes sense.
Plarth for our planet, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha
ploooky for hallowweeeny
I did the most on the chart isn’t that great?
comon people cant anyone answer
I agree with Maria Mediarito. Although it doesn’t fit the theme, She brings up a valid point.
Stygian… I find it has a nicer sound than ‘Styx’.
Charon, Nix, Hydra, and Stygian.
Lethe is interesting, too.
Leviathan
pinto
I think it is best to name it Cignus
IMO, the fourth moon will be called Persephone, after the wife of Hades.
I suggested Cerberus yesterday, but don’t see it posted here.
culusana
Chortle
hohohoh
Ceress
Since Pluto has recently been stripped of the right to be called a planet, pluto is almost like the bastard son of our solar system… Therefore, I think the new planet should be named Spurius, which is latin for bastard. The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines it as something that is “outwardly similar or corresponding to something without having its genuine qualities”
we whant air conditioner services centre name
I’d call ir Cerberus, or Proserpina.
Proserpina is the roman name of Persephone, wife of Pluto. If the planetoid is called by the roman name Pluto, and not the greek Hades, I think it would be more adequate.
Kratos na lang para masaya. . . .
I think Pluto’s newly discovered moon should be named Kronos, the titan that rules over time. Or Ouranos the father of all titans and lord of the sky.
Chimaera, Cerberus, Tyhoeus
1) Styx
2) Cerbereus
3) Osiris
4)Tautarus-the pit of the underworld where the most evil dwell.
5)Κρυφό- Greek for ‘Hidden’
6)Ascuns-’Hidden’
Elysium
Tartarus
Cerberus
Kronos
Hades
Calypso
Lethe
Persephone
Deimos (one of the moons of mars)
I take no credit for what others have posted.
fourthonto
The name should be ‘Zoe’ which from the greek is Spirit. The spirit surrounds pluto and keeps watch.
They should just sell the naming rights for a couple of years to big companies – I”d be happy for the moon to be called “Coke” if the money gained from that were put back into astronomy
PLEASE NAME THIS RECENTLY DISCOVERED MOON: THEMIS (MEANING, SOCIAL ORDER)THE DISCOVERY OF A FOURTH MOON, ORBITING PLUTO, BRINGS ORDER AND BALANCE, TO THE DWARF PLANET. KHARIS
Persephone
what about Mrs Jenkins?
Lethe seems the most appropriate.
Lethe would be nice
So would Kampe, a prison guard of the underworld
Cerberus too, the prison guard of hell itself.
The scientists should have named the moons after the five rivers of hell:
Acheron
Cocytus
Phlelgethon
Lethe
Styx
Maria Mediarito, you are somewhat right about Lethe
I think it should be called Kevin Bacon. So in the future when people look at a star chart and are passing by Pluto on their way to where ever, they can see that Pluto has four moons. Three of them named in traditional form, then when they look at the fourth moon they could be like, “Kevin Bacon?!? Who the heck is Kevin Bacon?” It would be like a cosmic joke done by us on the future.
I think that Cerberus is the appropriate name for the planet. The three headed dog protects the gates of the Underworld.
I know I’m not the first to suggest Cerberus, but it really is a good name. This 4th moon is the outermost moon, so it’s like a guard, just like Cerberus is the guard of the Underworld. It goes with the Greek theme and it really fits!
Jimmy Currin suggested DIS but I think DAT is better.
Uh! How about Goofy, Minnie or even Mickey ?
I think Achilles or Thetis or Styx. Achilles was the first to bathe in the Styx. Thetis was the mother of Achilles. So I think either of them.
Tho i have not read all the entries, i would like to echo Maria M’s vote for “Lethe” as the name for Pluto’s 4th moon. It is a positive and cleansing presence in the midst of all that darkness in the Underworld. (Land of the Dead)
Lethe is a river there, a drink from which is believed by the ancient Greek’s gods, causes oblivion and forgetfulness as the sins of the past are washed away in her waters.
Perhaps a reliever of Suffering, making Hell, not such a bad place to be.
i once heard “If You are in Hell, keep going!!!!!”
I would like to propose Hindu vedic name… Prahlad
Now is the opportunity to name it either “Mickey” or “Donald”.
what about Tartarus It is Hades dungeon for torture and suffering
or Minos judge of the dead
My vote is for either Lethe or Cerberus.
I like the beauty of Lethe but Cerberus seems a far more fitting title as the guardian of the gates.
Since Persephone, Cerberus and Orpheus are all asteroids I belive, Minthe (an ill fated love of Pluto/Hades), would get my vote.
Hey! How about Cerberus? I’ll bet no one in any of the previous 6,000 comments has thought to suggest that.
…not seventy times anyway…
what about Keres daughter of Nyx or Moros who ends a persons life after their thread if life is cut or u could use the cutter Parcae (fate) even the gods feared them or Morta the one who chooses how the mortal or immortal will die.
I think “Erinyes” would be an appropriate name. Persephone would be good as well, but she was too significant to be a moon of Pluto as she is a goddess. Erinyes, however, are associated strongly with Pluto / Hades and are born from Nyx, which is already a moon of Pluto.
I think, in honor of the last Harry Potter, it should be named Fluffy, after the three headed dog. Which is actually J.K. Rowling’s version of Cerberus.
Exodus 23:13
“Pay attention to all that I have said to you, and make no mention of the names of other gods, nor let it be heard on your lips.
How far we have fallen to ignore the words of Yehovah! No wonder all of creation is crying out for the sons of God to be revealed. Another flood or drought or hurricane anyone? Just keep ignoring Yehovah, or turn to him and be saved from the fiery wrath about to be poured out!
How about Urizen (a pun for “your reason” and is greek for “to limit”). Urizen is one of the four Zoas who make up the four-fold individual (P4 = four-fold individual). Furthermore, Urizen is an Eternal who is separated from the rest who then creates the fallen material universe, Ulro. Since Pluto is no longer considered as a planet, Urizen is actually befitting for the situation.
with my respects to all of you;participants but don’t you think that its time to abrase life and god will;everything i have had herd is dead underworld or cerberus the dog gardian of hell.why not beauty change, friendshipetc. i sujest, hermes because is amoon. thank you very much.
Pluto’s 4th moon should be named Giyar-Gerabalama.
it should be la cuarta luna spanish for fourth moon
It defanatly should be Giyar-Gerabalama.DEFATLY you should name P4 that.Defanatly. Its my exact name for P4. GIYAR-GERABALAMA!!!!!!!!!
Don’t overlook the obvious. Pluto was Goofy’s dog for corn’s sake. That moon is Goofy!
please name it RAIZA.
thanks
Thantos, death incarnate
Lori you are wrong! My name for P4 is Giyar-Gerabalama. But nick name it Giyar.
I think Hermes is as good a name as any: not only was Hermes a psychopomp but he was the god of boundaries as fitting Pluto’s position at the boundary of our solar system.
It’s name…is Robert Paulson
They should name it Starbucks so NASA can get more funding.
Hercules
Why all the darkness and death?
This new moon is a great thing, something to celebrate. What means “Yeah” in Greek?
Name it President Snow
Alecto
If Pluto is a planet then the things all around should be some names to accompany it.
Ask Walt Disney. Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Hughie, Louie, Dewie. ????????????????????????
Dang, Persephone is a really good one too. Mostly I love that name. And then because the kidnap of Persephone really fits the whole being a satellite of Pluto thing.
Dear, Em Spearing, Pluto was Mickey’s dog. Your childhood has been revoked
Can we change Nyx and Hydra’s names while we’re at it?
i think it should be Nico.
JK
Make the name modern. Pluto is a planet that is not a planet, a dwarf planet. This is a very small moon of a planet that is not a planet. So it is like a moon. Should it be only considered an astroid? It is very small like an apple. So let name it “midget apple.”
Pomegranate, fruit of the underworld!
It should be named Mickey!Remember Pluto the dog?
Persephone
How about Dave, “It’s full of stars”
Eric
Hecate!!!!!!
Who cares what they call it!! As if they are really going to take into consideration your suggestions!!
How about OPRAH or HARPO or better yet Luna
Who cares what they call it!! Why even waste your time with suggestions!! As if they will ever use any of them to begin with!!
I believe that the moon should be called Acheron the river of pain it fits the underworld theme and then if all else fails it should be named Elysium after the Elysium fields where the dead go if the were heroes or good people. Hoped I helped!
I would say erinyes the romans called them: Dirae (they tortured those who had done evil deeds (i.e. kill someone, break an oath) they’re also kind of like Hades/Pluto’s helpers, so i think naming the new moon this would be appropriate)
Perhaps Cocytus/Kokytos, an underworld river, or Moros, the personification of doom, the brother of the Fates/Moirae, and the son of Nyx. The already mentioned Persephone or Thánatos would also make good names.
Cerburus
It should be Cerburus
The Greek Cerberus is quite fitting, better known than Roman Kerberus.
I like P4 or after.
wow… naming a moon of a lesser planet… how pathetic.
i mean honestly, have you no pity? or shame?
it’s not even ours… that’s like naming an ancient ruin “pudding” it may not seem insulting but judging by how much things have changed the languages and mythology is all mixed up.
would you truly like any of these names for yourself? i mean how ridiculous does being called “Cerberus” sound? i wouldn’t like any of these names for me.
we name things because they show ownership of an object.
we don’t own this.
its not ours.
how would you like to be owned?
don’t name things that aren’t yours to keep.
not one name in the universe can describe something in full detail and divinity.
don’t name it. let us call it what we want.
thank you,
Please stop naming things that aren’t yours, Sincerely,
ME!i!i!i!i!i!i
Why don’t they name it after another 4th….Shemp.
Well if you stick with mythology, then there could be lots. I like the suggestion ‘Persephone’ and Lethe, Erinyes, Erebus, Cerberus, Tantalus, Acheron, Cocytus, and Phlegethon all work.
And for those who think it should be a happier one, you could name it Elysium because that’s a good thing in Hades.
Cerberus! If not then it can be Nyx, Morpheus, Hypnos, or Tarturus. We need to stick to the whole underworld, creepy-dead theme.
Having thought about all the Roman names, classic Greek names, great works of literature, astronomical terms and mythology, I suggest DAVE.
Either greek/roman spelling.
what have you:
Cerberus
Persephone
It should be called Calpurnia.
Cerberus is the best choice.
You should call it Pigfarts (from A very Potter Musical)
I’ve got a few Greek mythology names for you . . .
-Alecto
-Magaera
-Tisiphone
-Epimetheus
-Plouton
-Eos
-Kronos/Cronus
-Leto
-Orpheus
-Orion
-Selene
-Thantos
“XERXES” The right name for the fourth moon orbiting pluto.
“XERXES” xerxes would be the exact name for the fourth moon of pluto.
And here are the meanings, in case you were wondering . . .
ALECTO
One of the three Furies. Her name means unceasing, and she is constantly angry.
MAGAERA
Another of the three Furies. Sister to Alecto and Tisiphone, along with the three Fates. Her name means to grudge, and she is always jealous of everyone.
TISIPHONE
Tisiphone is – along with Alecto and Magaera – one of the three Furies. Her name means avenging murder, and she will punish anyone for anything.
I chose the three Furies because they relate to Hades (Greek form of Pluto).
EPIMETHEUS
His name means afterthought. I chose his name because even though Pluto has been known of for a while (81 years), they have just discovered this moon.
PLOUTON
This name is the original Greek form of Pluto, and I thought it would fit that Pluto’s moon would have a similar name as its planet.
EOS
This name means dawn. I chose it for Pluto’s moon because it has been in the “dark” (or night) for 81 years (since Plutos discovery), and it is only now that it “comes to light” (or dawn). Get it?
KRONOS/CRONUS
Father of Hades/Pluto. Need I say more?
LETO
Her name means hidden/forgotten. Pluto’s fourth moon has been hidden, and now it’s discovered. Is any more explaination necessary?
ORPHEUS
This name means the darkness of the night. Hidden in shadows up until now, P4 is truly in the darkness of the night because it is so far away from the sun.
ORION
Meaning boundary/limit, this name is fitting because Pluto is one of the farthest planets from Earth to be discovered – making it a boundary.
SELENE
This name means moon. Do I have to say more?
THANTOS
Means death in Greek. And since Hades/Pluto is the god of the dead, it seems fitting.
Why not Hemera. She is the greek goddess of the daylight and the sun. Then there would be both darkness and daylight.Nyx and Hemera.
Dumbledore
Or…. Kratos
I shall provide the name of Tartarus! this moon has been in darkness for a while and Tartarus is the mythological deepest and darkest pit in the underworld.
What is this thing for Cerberus? When did the three-headed dog who guarded the gates of Hades become a populist cause celebre?
It should be named Furiae or Furia
It is a long story but basically Furiae is Latin for Furies, (Furia is the single tense) and The Furies are the helpers of Pluto or the punishers and tormenters of souls… What? They said it might be scary.
Since the moon is so small – a mere 13-34km across – I’d suggest Obol: the coin which was placed in the mouth of the dead in order to pay the ferryman, Charon, for passage across the river Styx.
Why not Albus? Moon is considered white (Albus means white/pure) and it would be a fitting tribute to Albus Dumbledore, the great wizard, considering that we have just bid goodbye to the last Potter film Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. It would also encapsulate our times — the Potter era.
I like to name Emplast Pls
Gabri after my name Gabriel
Cerberus. I vote Cerberus. The three headed hound that keeps the living out of the Underworld.
Skully Waggs Galar
ive read some good names, but what is pluto with out his mickey mouse?
I like P4.
It has a sort of radial feeling about it,
like Pirelli P4’s.
How about “Tartarus”, Nyx’s brother, God of Deep Place, also the name of the abyss in the Underworld reserved for torment and suffering.
Persephone has already been suggested, but what about Kore or Proserpina, which are alternate names for Persephone? Personally, I would like to see it named Kore.
i was thinking Tartarus. its a perfect name for a small floating probably barren wasteland in deep space. just think: Pluto, and its moons Charon, Nix, Hydra, and TARTARUS. it’s an awesome name. and, if you guys are only looking for greek/roman gods and/or goddesses and monsters or whatever, Cerberus is a good name. but please please PLEASE name it Tartarus.
optimus prime lol
BTW, if this moon really DOES get named Tartarus, and ppl want to know my real name, it’s Jan-Luka Cabana
Terti, meaning third in latin?
I think of all these names, Maria Mediarito’s suggestion, Lethe, and also Cerberus are the most popular here. I am personally voting for Lethe as the reasoniing of lovely, and possibly Albus, as Prathiba said.
it should be named Styx, after the river Styx opon which gods swear oths
and it is the river which Charon ferries souls across. it just works
It’s clear this meaningless moon of a defrocked planet is getting the full Greek & Roman treatment. It’s all very tedious and in need of “something completely different.” I would suggest the new rock be called “Billy”
i will name it “Plutoid” one can guess why.
Aletheia- relating to Lethe, but meaning unconcealment or Truth-see Heidegger
per the story thats already being told by the names of the moons already, what is needed is the river Styx to be more complete. Cerebus would be a great name but from a storyboard perspective … Styx should be next.
In keeping with the Roman theme, the clear choice is: Proserpina. This is the equivalent of Persephone in Greek mythology. Were we to name it Persephone, the sub-planet would need to be called Hades.
I’m thinking either:
-Cerberus
-Persephone
-Styx
Basically any figure or object from Greek/Roman mythology commonly associated with Hades/Pluto.
i would like to vote for the name ‘LETHE’ and ‘Cerberus’.
many names suggested here is already used as names for moons of other planets.
Persephone, definitely.
It should be named Hecate, the Greek goddess of magic, or maybe Proserpina.
Proserpina is Pluto’s wife in Roman mythology by the way.
I have three names:
- Hercula: originate from Hercules
- Quattuor: It means 4 in Latin.
- Luna Quattuor: It means Moon 4 in Latin.
How about Proserpina, or Proserpine, or Prosperine? Pluto is the Roman god of the underworld, hence the Roman name Proserpina instead of Persephone, the Greek name. Besides, there’s already and asteroid named, 399 Persephone.
Cerberus, definately. It all fits that way.
“Bob” seems as good as anything else.
@Marie Verna: Yeah, yes, etc in Greek looks like Nai when it is Latinized. It’s pronounced “nye” like bill nye the science guy.
I second Maria Mediarito’s suggestion of “Lethe” for the same reasons.
Maria Mediarito (only 12) suggestion, Lethe, is excellent…it has been hidden…
Chuck
…pikachu?
Selena … The meaning of the name Selena is Moon
The origin of the name Selena is Spanish
Alternate spellings: Salena
Notes: from the Greek name Selene. Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, Tejano singer. Selena Gomez, actress.
What about Timor or Aaratz or Riatz or Zoraq
Hydraer
Argust
lunula
why is everyone suggesting Cerberus, Persephone, and ect. Why not other gods like the indian gods and egyptian gods why not them it does not have to be greek mythology? i think it would be named after Styx
Orcus. I’m not quite certain the mythology around the name, but Pluto was often mistaken for him.
And I like Pratibha’s comment. It would be an amazing conclusion for the era.
Let’s rename P4 Obama, after the god of economic destruction, who has taxed us and generations beyond us with his War on Prosperity, turning a once thriving nation into a third-world has-been while condemning all of its citizens to a death-by-a-thousand-cuts version of financial ruin.
Daimon- the greek derivative of “demon” or a entity of knowledge. Like this moon, it remains far from the pantheon of gods and goddesses but remains a Deified hero or soul that is blessed enough to remain close at their periphery. This moon is unknown to have any major impact on our space research (demons were either helpful or harmful) and like a demon, it’s timeless existence is unknown until found but is nonetheless the intermediary spirit between men and gods, or in our case space and humans.
In keeping with tradition any “mithological name” would do. But who has all the time to read about mithology. P4 (Pluto’s fourth moon) is readily interpreted as Pluto’s fourth moon. It makes more sense to me (even scientifically) than all of the inventions of the goddesses. It comes to be as a natural hairstyle. Right???

I think it is time we begin honoring modern heros who’s brought inspiration to the newer generations. It is because of our modern space program that these kinds of discoveries are being made. When asked “What is Pluto?” the top two answers will most likely be – the demoted planet or the cartoon dog. So, what better name for a mini moon than “Pup”. I vote to name the new moon Pup. It’s probably what Disney would name Pluto’s puppy. Regards.
Cerberus seems to have the most votes so far….I know next to nothing, but am always interested in learning about this stuff…perhaps we should keep it simple from now on and name it Francis, or James…..although we could just look at it without naming it and be equally satisfied..after all it is a restless evil, and endless i should add. Enjoi
“Lethe”!! Its just the best fit.
LETHE
We think that these names are cool ![]()
Medusa,
Gorgon or
Minotaur
Name it Stephen Colbert!!
in keeping with the underworld theme, i believe it should be Persephone
Why all mythical Gods and Goddesses of ancient Greeks, Romans or whatever else comes to mind from that part of the world?
What is wrong with using some trule legends of mankind? Let’s say Cyrus in appreciation to his first human right charter.
they should name the new moon Mickey Mouse… since pluto is his bests friends name..!!!
Eyewitness…
The Cerberus fixation likely results from–with few exceptions–that some folks simply don’t bother reading anyone else’s thoughts before blurting out what they’re evidently convinced is uniquely their idea. The word (with a couple misspellings) is literally listed 74 times before my other comment (July 26, 2011, 10:20), and several times since.
(egrep -i “cerberus|cereberus” webpage | wc)
Pratibha…
By now it’s not necessarily a huge secret, but please be considerate of those who maybe haven’t yet seen it. Or read it.
Asclepius, who was raised by Chiron. He was a great healer and hunter.
I agree with Maria Mediarito wayyy above in the comments. Lethe is a good name for it. Also a good description too.
Cerberus or Persephone!
I think that Pluto’s fourth moon should be named Ceberus. Theoretically speaking though, Pluto can not have a moon, because it is not a planet.
i think they should name it PROMETHEUS because he was an import mythological figure he was known for his suffering and disobedience to the greek god, he was tied to a stone and the vulture would eat his liver and it would regrow and the vulture would eat it again. He suffered great pains in tryign to help the creation. I FEEL THIS NAME WOULd be suit able BECAUSE IT WOULD HOW SCIENTIST THAT DISCOVERY IS GOOD BUT TOO MUCH PRIDE AND PASSION FOR KNOWLEGDE LEADS TO BAD THINGS AND SUFFERING. it would show them that there creation after all mankind so they should be really wise
The moon should be named ‘Tycho’ after Tycho Brahe a 16th century astronomer known for his planetary observations.
I think the fourth moon should be named Orpheus, after the man who traveled into the depths of Hades to bring his wife back from untimely death.
How about Pluto Jr.?
Jibish
Lethe is a great name
Kampe is also a great name
Cerberus is fitting
Achilles!!!!!!!!!!
What’s so special about Roman and Greek Gods?
You could have easily named a planet/other thing Osiris or Thoth ir something.
Who thought this up?
Way to go Einstien
You know, we would run out of names in Roman and Greek Mythology for planet names
We should use something else!
Maybe names of Dead People!
Hmmm….. How about Voyager 10?
I have a name suggestion for “P4″ from Greek mythology, but first, let me dispel an assumption which seems rampant on this blog: the Pluto/death/Hades theme is not even present in the existing nomenclature. Hydra, one of the existing, named moons, is not part of the afterlife/underworld narrative at all.
On the arguable assumption that any greek mythological source is consistency enough, I suggest Atalanta. In Greek mythology, Atalanta was distracted during a foot race (running) by each of three golden apples, supplied to her competitor Melanion (alternately, Hippomenes) by Aphrodite. Whenever Atalanta passed Melanion (Hippomenes) in the race, he would roll one of the apples ahead of her and she, distracted by their irresistable value and beauty (gold), would allow herself to pursue the apple and neglect her rival in the race, Melanion (Hippomenes). Thus, he won the race, unlike many before him, and won her hand in marriage as his prize.
There is something charming to me about the imagery of this little moon “chasing after” the three bigger, more prominant, famously named moons, like Atalanta always trying to catch–or catch up to–each of the golden apples.
My only concern is, admittedly, the name sounds somewhat too closely like the city of “Atlanta,” as though the named moon might unintentionally provide marketing promotion for the American city. The Greek masculinized form is Atalantos, perhaps a little less suggestive of the southern metropolis in Geogia. In either form, the translation is “equal value, equivalent merit” (from the Greek, a- “one, together” + talanton “weight, value” (cf. talent).
I also seriously suggest the name “Venetia.” Not only is it lovely, but the charming vision of that little girl with her active mind gazing at the heavens brings to my mind the picture of the diminutive “P4″ “running with the big dogs,” Charon, Nyx, and Hydra, who have already made themselves known to earthly observation. I am sure the astronomers at the Lowell Observatory never expected a schoolgirl to “keep up with” their inquirying minds, however, famously, eleven year old Venetia Burney most certainly did.
I propose the fourth moon of Pluto be named after ‘Erebos’, which translates to ‘darkness’. This is in line with the fourth moon being out of sight all these while. In addition, Erebos was the husband of Nyx (the moon named Nix), and the father of Kharon (the moon named Charon), their son. It would be nice to have the moons being closely linked to each other as one family.
The naming rights for the new Pluto moon should be auctioned (with a high reserve of say, 1 billion dollars) to an individual, company or country and the money donated to famine relief in Africa.
Keeping up with the death/underworld theme, I think the new moon should be called Anubis, after the Egyptian jackal-God of the Underworld, or, Hel the Norse Goddess of Death and the Afterlife
I think it should be Cerberus, Cronus, Persephone, Tartarus, Acheron, Cocytus, Phlegethon, Lethe, or Styx.
Cerberus-Pluto’s three-headed dog
Cronus-Pluto’s father
Persephone-Pluto’s wife
Tartarus-The darkest, deepest part of the underworld
Acheron,Cocytus,Phlegethon, Lethe, Styx- The 5 rivers of the underworld
This isn’t a name but rather a thought…there are a lot of names to choose from, but everyone seems to be getting at the fact that it took a long time to find this one. Maybe naming it as some ultimate “hiding” or darkness names might not hold true if a fifth or more moons are found in the future?
Hades!!!! i should be Hades
it* should be Hades
Dudes and Dudettes of da world…..it should totally be named after the glowing ball from LoZ named Navi.
Does the name really have to do with Mythology?
Can it just be something really random like Warmoth, or Grandorathoroan?
“Goofy”
Maybe name it Mickey!
“Quartus” because in Latin quartus means “the fourth”.
Maybe Achlys?
May be Cyreus , Plutamos , Ademans, Adamantors, Sendoris, Menteris, Pon Ardemis , Cytolpys, Mesania, Anderoid, Mentori, Acencianos,Bup ,Auputos.
Why not break the convention of naming every planet or moon with a Greek god starting from this moon??
Try something else…. May be gods and godesses fro, Hindu mythology as suggested in Rendezvous with Rama…….
The fourth moon should be named Tombaugh of course, after the man who discovered Pluto.
cerebus!!!!!!!!!!
Hi,
I think the 4th moon of Pluto should be named Cerberus because he was the 3 headed dog that guarded the gates to the Underworld. Its like Pluto is the Underworld and the new moon looks like it is guarding the planet.
Oscar(11 years old)
P.SPlease
P.S.SPretty please with cherry on top.
know one knows what should the name of that 4th moon
know 1 knows what is the name of that moon only God knows
I think Posidon, brother of Zeus, God of the sea, where fishes live.
Most fish have fins.
This moon has just slipped into our knowledge. One can slip someone a Micky fin and Mickey was the mouse that owned Pluto.
Just a thought……
Maybe what ever the Latin or Greek word is for PEACE
May bring some hope to our universe……
Hi,
I like “The Moon With No Name”, said with a Scottish accent, as it is theatrical, implies mysteriousness (is “mysteriousness” even a word?), and is my idea.
But it’s also literary or cinematic in origin, I think, so probably not on theme with the existing naming convention for planets and moons.
It’s also five words, which doesn’t fit well with the single-word convention, either. But as we’re running out of cool sounding, mythical, single words anyway, why not take the opportunity to break out into a new, multi-word-celestial-body-naming era?
Otherwise, Maria Mediarito’s idea of “Lethe” sounds good, if her justification is correct.
“Cerberus” is already overused (see “running out of cool-sounding, mythical, single words” argument, above), but a good fit to the context.
“Cerebrus” would be a great way to get everyone confused and tongue-tied, mixing it up with “Cerberus”.
Anyone know how I could waste another five minutes?
Let’s name it Fifi, Minnie’s pet and Pluto’s first girlfriend. What about a bit of fun?
Heracles is Greek. Hercules is Roman. Get your mythology straight.
Pwinto..!!!
I think it should be named Artemis.
Artemis was the daughter of Zeus and Leto. She was Apollo’s twin sister.
Artemis was nearly always cold (it would be cold to be that far from the sun!). The only thing Artemis loved besides her family were her floppy-eared dogs.
Artemis was the goddess of the hunt and the goddess of the moon.
The best name is Cerberus, for sure
Definitely Mickey. Leave the Roman shit in the past. How long are we going to go on scrambling around for Roman names? Pathetic! Lighten up people and call it Mickey!
I agree with Binaya, it should be Styx after the river Styx. What a great word!
I think Cerberus is too big a name to call a “mini-moon”. And Lethe and Persephone are too beautiful. I like Erebos though. Isn’t he Nyx’s husband? I also think Ixion is nice. Both are not that well known, in other words, small names. Small names for a small moon.
My suggested name would be Demeter. Life after death. That to me sound like the right name.
Totally Erebus: Spirit of darkness; son of Chaos. He is a Roman god.
I think it should be named,
“I used to be a moon of a planet, but now I’ve been reduced by
some narcissistic so-called scientists to being a moon of a mere
rock, pretentiously renamed a newfangled moniker called a ‘plutoid’ .”
I’m just sayin’…
A fitting name would be Perseus for the newly discovered moon
I really think it should be named Persephone
Persephone in modern English—also called Kore
@ Maria Mediarito …….. I vote for your suggestion. I think it can’t be anything but LETHE. I like to think that naming it in respect to mythology is the way to go.
My vote is for “Apollymi”, the greek goddess of destruction. Also referred to as the “Destroyer”.
its should be Enma, also known as Yama, is a deity from Buddhist and Hindu tradition who judges the dead with either reward or punishment in Jigoku (a world in the afterlife usually referred to in English as the Japanese “Hell”).
Or, Cerberus the multiheaded dog which guards the gates of The Underworld.
Name for the fourth moon around the “planet” Pluto: Pandora. What will Pandora reveal? This moon was in hiding for about 71 years since the discovery of Pluto, and yet Pluto still has not completed one orbit around the sun.
Morpheus
Hello there! well I will call it either Nova, Torus, and somehow my favor Genus (classify as a class or group…!?) within their own family of evolution, I think.
Oshila:)
Just call it Bob.
MINOTAUR!
Either Persephone or Cerberus. Has to be.
So what would be the Latin for fourth rock circling around the ninth rock formally known as a planet??
The only logical name for Pluto’s fourth moon is ‘Chuck Norris’.
Hecate-the goddess of magic and necromancy.
Astraea
goddess of justice
I believe Erebus might be an appropriate name. He is the god of shadows, brother and, in most myths, male consort to Nyx. Keep all the names familial for the moons. Father, Mother and Son.
I propose the name Hecate, goddess of magic and necromancy or Proserpina whom Pluto took as his bride.
I VOTE PEDRO
i think it should be “Proserpina”, like ’solver solversson’ suggested. the forgotten wife of PLUTO, it FITS!
i mean, it’s the 4th moon, and it was forgotten for a long time, well until now. SO IT DOES FIT!
I think it should be BOB, THE BUILDER CAN WE DO IT, BOB THE BUILDER, NO WE CAN’T!!!
I think it should be something like Litcatha.
All names are good, but there only is one for it. So thank you if you agree with mine! =) Good Luck!
Persephone (or Proserpina since the trend is to go with the Roman variant) or Cerberus. Definitely. You can’t have Pluto without those two.
Chione
hows bot mikey mouse thay go togather
hows bot mickey mouse thay go togather
how bot mickey mouse nice name they go nice togather
ok mickey mouse it is
Boo, Chione is an asteroid. Persephone, Pandora and Proserpina also taken by asteroids. Pandora is also a moon of Saturn.
Maybe “Momus”, god of satire, mirth and mockery. Son of Nyx (Nix – so would be sibling to Charon). Charon, Nix, Hydra and Momus.
The fourth moon of Pluto could be called – Tesera – which is the Greek word for the number 4. Tesera sounds Terestial, which I think is appropriate.
I think the new moon should be named Selene, after the Greek Goddess of the moon.
It adds a happy air to the planet’s neighborhood because Selene’s love, Endymion, evaded death by being granted eternal life, symbolizing that death doesn’t always win. Even if Endymion wasn’t eternally youthful so he shriveled up.
@kyle how about both? LOL
I think it should be named Vidas
I kind of like “Fred”
Tartarus
Kyo, I think it sounds good!
Cerberus, as the protector
Cerberus
I think for once, the tradition of naming things in the universe after things in mythology should be broken just one time. Why not name Pluto’s fourth moon Atlantis, after NASA’s last mission launch of Atlantis and its retirement. After all, Atlantis was launched by NASA and NASA did discover this moon.
How about Assiseris
meta
ya name it meta
I THINK IT SHOULD BE NAMED PLUTOEUS
it should be Bunny
What about potato?
Or tomato?
Let me offer the name: ALERA. It means just enough to be noticeable!
What about plutan?
hades which means “unseen” as this moon was for so long
or just Selene meaning “moon”
I believe the new moon should be named Hecate (Hekate).
How about “Pluquatroluna”
You should name it Saix, Zexion, or Nephormulas idk
I think the moon should be nameby the founder of either Pluto or P4.
If not, Some greek names shall fit in well..
(It should be named after me..!!! XP(LOL)…My name is Basil..XD)
Cerberus is good for me.
We shall name it Sibyl…from greek mythology Cumaean Sibyl
We shall name it Sibyl…from greek mythology Cumaean Sibyl
The name should be Stygian, a greek word for gloomy or such and is related to the river styx, appropriate and fitting, also because it keeps with tradition and would be outside the box and fitting for a 4th planet. This is because it also is within the Japanese mythology that the fourth number is unlucky somewhat like stygian. A mix between two mythology, good name.
I mean moon, same difference
Lethe for sure. Super appropriate
It should be Styx, but after the band, not the river.
I think it would relate if it were named Cerberus, like what Bill Watson (the first comment) said.
Proserpina or Persephone, same thing but different cultures.
Merlin, after the greatest wizard of all time!
Hypnos. I saw someone else say it and it just seemed to fit so well. From wikipedia : “In Greek mythology, Hypnos (“sleep”) was the personification of sleep; the Roman equivalent was known as Somnus. His twin was Thánatos (“death”); their mother was the primordial goddess Nyx (“night”). His palace was a dark cave where the sun never shines.”
How come only one of every five people who posts here can spell?
i think the most appropriate one is “Hilal Cebeci” ,who laid the foundations of astronomy.
Jollibee . . . .
Definitely Persephone or Cerberus.
Mickey. As in Mouse. Pluto and Mickey.
Or, just “Ralph.” Ralph is an unlikely name for a planet which makes it the perfect choice. So does “Bob.”
i would name it morpheus after the god of dreams… and the matrix
I think it should be named Hades, because that name is closely linked with Charon.
petite 4 pluto = p4P
PIKACHU
Jollibee, Clark? are u a filipino? share…
I’d go for Tartarus: Deepest part of Hades, where the titans are locked up.
RAICHU!!!!!!!!!!!!
NAME IT EMBOAR!
i got a ptd charizard and raichu
name it emboar
EMBOAR!
RAIRAI!
tepig.
pichu.
QWEQWE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
POKEMONZ!
Mickey Mouse. He owns Pluto.
Mickey Mouse and …
The name should obvious; Astraeus, Titan of Dusk
name it emboar!
or raichu
They should call it Hypnos, the Greek god of sleep, or Persephone, Hades’ wife. Hypnose because hes the god of sleep, I don’t really know how else to explain that. Persephone, well because she’s Hades’ wife. It could also be named Tartarus, where Zeus trapped the titains. But, I’d go with Persephone.
Lets use Disney mythology.
Name it Mickey.
If it had not been named yet, then — for sure — Radamanthys, one of the judges in the Hades.
Name it: Ryan
I vote for Cerberus. I don’t think a -350 degrees frozen up moon should be named after Persephone, the goddess of spring. and pokemon? seriously? people 200 years from now will look back and facepalm at the stupidity of their ancestors.
I suggest calling it Styx, where the first two letters S and T are in honor of Alan Stern, founder of the Pluto Underground and leader of the New Horizons mission. Because Styx and Sterns can break our Browns.
I believe it should be named either Janus, the god of beginnings, ends, time, decisions and doorways, Hades, god of the underworld or Cerebus, gatekeeper of the underworld
Cerberus (3 headed dog that guarded the underworld) or Styx (name of a river in the underworld)
I believe it should be called abuto because it means i have hidden and the moon has been hidden so it fits. Also great job NASA for finding this new moon!
I think it should be Athina.
What about Phlondar
cerberus for such an small moon that is a long word wont suit it especially when theres nyx and hydra which are bigger moons
The following names of moons are already in use:
Adrastea, Amalthea, Ananke, Ariel, Belinda, Bianca, Callisto, Calypso, Carme, Charon, Cordelia, Cressida, Deimos, Desdemona, Despina, Dione, Elara, Enceladus, Epimetheus, Europa, Galatea, Ganymede, Helena, Himilia, Hyperion, Iapetus, Io, Janus, Juliet, Larissa, Leda, Lysithia, Metis, Mimas, Miranda, Naiad, Nereid, Oberon, Ophelia, Pasiphae, Phobos, Phoebe, Portia, Proteus, Puck, Rhea, Rosalind, Sinope, Telesto, Tethys, Thalassa, Thebe, Titan, Triton, and Umbriel.
Eos the greek god of the moon
persephone is already taken and so is pluto.
I have to agree on “Cerberus”
I’m thinkin’ S/QWERTYUIOP1234
This is a “in case” choice!!!! Ok, it’s Titanicom
For my last commet, Titancom is pronounced t-I-an-come
@ Emma on July 25, 2011 at 2:52 am
Phobos and Deimos (Panic and Fear)are already the moons of Mars.
to all who suggested Cerberus…
Yes while it’s true that that three-headed dog is associated with Pluto, it is also true that it guarded the entrance to the underworld and it will be unfitting if the guardian will be “far” from what it’s guarding.
LETHE would be a more suitable name since it’s the river of forgetfulness. This new moon almost was forgotten.
Why does everybody all say they vote for one thing or another? The people making the actual decision don’t care what you think. And why do we have to name everything we see? It’ll just cause unneeded sadness that the majority of people didn’t get what they wanted. We don’t have the right to name this moon, especially if we’ve only discovered it this late. And I agree with ME!!!!!!! in that we should leave it at nothing. Everyone could call it what they believed was the right name. And there isn’t really a “right” name. Names don’t suit anything perfectly; the only truly fitting name is no name at all. Anyway, does the name of a moon some 10 billion miles away really mean this much to you. IT DOESN’T MATTER what some ball of ice out in space is called, so why spend your time arguing about this. There’s no right decision, so don’t make a decision. Put your time into something productive, like learning to capitalize the “I” in your posts.
@ Demosthenes (or should I say, nothing or noone or whatever):
“In keeping with tradition, from what figure of Greek mythology should this newly discovered satellite be named? Offer your suggestion below.” DUH!
Also follow me on blog at Sam Blog Of Fun @ Dinstudio and my moms name is Lynn Prucha and don’t go to my house and toss my carp if you want more names becase I am quiting!!!!
It think it should be called Boreas, Greek god of the north wind. Its easy to remember and it sounds cool. Its cold there, so i searched Roman god of cold and i got this (no roman god of cold due to Rome, Italy being warm
)
to all who chose ceberus that idea had just been taken for an asteroid I choose Thanantos the guardian of the doors of death
I believe Pluto’s fourth moon should be named for:
Cerberus- the 3-headed guard dog of the underworld
Persephone – the beautiful but ill-fated wife of Hades
Proserpina – the Roman form of Persephone
Thanatos – the god and personification of death
Mors – the Roman form of Thanatos
Tartarus – the deepest, darkest part of the Underworld. Where invincible beings are imprisoned.
Erebos – Greek god of darkness
Styx – the river that separates the realm of the living from the realm of the deceased. Styx actually means hate. The gods would use the water from the Styx to tell if someone, mortal or immortal, was telling the truth.
Acheron – the river in the Underworld that is the river of woe.
Cocytus – the river of lamentation. If dead souls were not buried properly, they would drift across Cocytus’s banks for all of eternity.
Lethe – the river of forgetfulness, in which dead souls bathe in to forget who they were during life.
Phlegethon – the river of Hades’s fire
Hecate – Greek goddess of darkness. It is said that she roams in darkness with her dogs and represents the terrors of the night. She is also goddess of magic and sorcery.
Trivia – Roman form of Hecate
There are many more options, but I don’t have time to type them all.
Mickey and Goofy, as per Robert Anton Wilson.
Or start over and name them Cocytus, Caïna, Antenora, Ptolemea, Judecca, as per Larry Niven.
Of course it should be cerberus.
