Pluto gains a fourth moon, but what should it be named?

Pluto may have been demoted to a dwarf planet in 2006, but that hasn’t stopped astronomers from studying this intriguing plutoid. NASA recently announced the discovery of a fourth moon, be it a “mini-moon,” circling the former planet. Dubbed “P4” for the time being, the hunt is on for an appropriate name.

The practice of naming planets after gods and goddesses can be traced back to the Babylonians, but it is the naming conventions of the Romans that we continue to refer to today. The International Astronomical Union has established a set of guidelines for planetary nomenclature that is monitored by a group of scientists.

Pluto’s name comes from a lovely and unlikely source. Fueled by a passion for classical mythology and astronomy, Venetia Burney, an eleven-year-old schoolgirl from Oxford, England, proposed the name Pluto to her grandfather (a librarian at the Bodleian Library at Oxford University) who in turn passed it on to astronomers at the Lowell Observatory. From a list of three prospective names, Venetia’s suggestion won out. For her achievement, Venetia’s grandfather rewarded her with five pounds.

Of the now four moons circling Pluto, Charon is the largest. The name is a derivation of the Greek Kharon – the ferryman of the dead over the river Styx. Charon is closely associated with the god Hades, whom the Romans link with Pluto.

The two remaining moons, Nix and Hydra are named in part for their initials NH, a reference to the New Horizons robotic spacecraft mission; or perhaps the names suggest the watchful eye the two keep over Pluto.

Nix is derived from the Greek Nyx, the goddess of darkness and night, and mother of Charon. The alternate spelling (replacing the y with an i) is to avoid confusion with the asteroid called 3908 Nyx.

Hydra is named for the nine-headed Lernaean beast who battled, and was eventually slain by, Hercules in Greek mythology.

In keeping with tradition, from what figure of Greek mythology should this newly discovered satellite be named? Offer your suggestion below.

Artist’s whimsical ‘Pig’ images on display

The Columbian (Vancouver, WA) January 26, 2006 | MATT WASTRADOWSKI Columbian staff writer In commercial artist Trip Gruver’s world, pigs fly and horses don life jackets to take a swim.

“Pigs Can Fly” and “Horses Can Float” are two series of Gruver’s colorful, digitally altered photographs. The Vancouver-based artist melds public domain images and cartoony animals to create what he calls “super-reality,” or natural-looking blends of extremely different elements. go to web site public domain images

Both series are on display at the North Bank Gallery, 1005 Main St., through Saturday. Artist Carrie White, who is showing her collection of paintings entitled “Beautiful,” produced and curated the show. White says Gruver’s vibrant images complement her colorful paintings. The North Bank Gallery is a cooperative run by artists.

“Pigs Can Fly” was born after one of Gruver’s commercial projects in Kuala Lumpur fell through in early 1999. Gruver created one of the images as a joke, suggesting that “perhaps we’ll do this job when pigs can fly.” His youngest children, now ages 10, 8 and 7, enjoyed the project so much, Gruver started “Horses Can Float” in 2003. Each series includes 12 images, which Gruver hopes to publish as a series of children’s books after the exhibit ends. Upcoming image sets include “Sheep Can Slide,” “Snakes Can Stand” and “Frogs Can Run.” Having his work on display is nothing new for Gruver. He says he co-produced and directed animated shorts for Sesame Street between 1982 and 1984, and was involved with commercials for such brands as Charmin, Huggies and Capri Sun.

Gruver’s most recognizable work was a series of about 20 “Michelin Baby” television commercials, which he says he designed and directed for Michelin Tires between 1990 and 1996. The half- film and half-animated spots became a hit and are now a part of pop culture. White says of the commercials’ success, “Moms really saw those tires as being safe for their babies.” Whether he’s creating Michelin babies, flying pigs or floating horses, Gruver says he doesn’t “need to change the world,” but his goals are simple: He just wants to make people smile. here public domain images

I don’t know how you can have Pluto and Charon without it.

Maria Mediarito on July 24, 2011 at 11:37 pm

Hm… I’ve had quite an interest to Mythology as well as that Venetia Burney (Only, I’m just 12.)
I’d like to propose the name “Lethe”. Which is one of the rivers in the Underworld, which the dead bathe in so that may ‘be cleansed of their mortal memories” and be reborn or resurrected. If my memory does not fail me, “Lethe” means concealment. To “conceal” something is to hide it, and this 4th moon has only been discovered far later than the other 3 moons. So I suppose in some way, you could say “P4″ was in ‘hiding’.

Lesia Valentine on July 24, 2011 at 11:39 pm

Persephone, of course.

yash on July 24, 2011 at 11:41 pm

I would name it as ‘Plumoon”

Josh on July 24, 2011 at 11:53 pm

I say “Erebos.” It fits right in with the Roman Mythological naming of the moons brothers and sisters. Erebos, the Roman god and personification of Darkness, may also be a fitting name, given that the moon has just been discovered, way out in the dark regions of the Solar System.

Kent Ochse on July 25, 2011 at 12:16 am

Soteria, personification of safety and the deliverance from harm. This name is fitting because this moon is so far away from the sun and Earth, thus personifying safety and distance from the harmful effects of our part of the solar system.

naghihamekasi on July 25, 2011 at 12:17 am

I think we should name it :Apollonius
My reasons:
He was Greek
He was an astronomer
The name implies Greek mythology i.e APOLLO
It sounds like a related word to PLUTO!
And among geometers he truly stands out as a god!!
hope you are convinced.

Viduus – Roman god who separated the soul and the body after death.

To keep with the whole Pluto theme.

I’m probably not the first to suggest this, but what about “Cerberus” – the three headed dog that guarded the gates of hell.
Fitting – especially if it’s Pluto’s outermost moon.

I think Persephone would be a suiting name given the theme of the Underworld surrounding Pluto.

Narcisus on July 25, 2011 at 12:28 am

i may have not spelled the name right. the name came from a greek story in which there was a handsome and then he fell in love with himself when looking at a clear spring water pond and so he died because he did nothing but look at himself. and so a goddess turned him into a flower, but then the pond talked to the goddess and became a saltwater pond because it told the goddess that in the man’s eyes she saw herself

Persephone- The women of which was stolen away by Hades

Cerberus: For the Three-headed beast that guarded the gates of the Underworld .

Elysium: For the fields of hero’s and the triumphant souls who dwell within the underworld.

Cerberus? It’s already the name of an asteroid, a constellation and an albedo feature (dark spot) on Mars, but it seems appropriate enough.

William Bagnall on July 25, 2011 at 2:01 am

The name “Arges” would be an intriguing name for a moon, as it is the third and brightest cyclopes child of Gaia.

Keelan on July 25, 2011 at 2:08 am

Styx would be cool, to rhyme with Nix and to keep the relation to Charon. Or perhaps Cerberus if that isn’t already a name of a star. Though Cerberus is a powerful name and sounds more appropriate for a planet…perhaps with three moons.

eee on July 25, 2011 at 2:15 am

Oneiroi would be nice, I think.

Cerberus

Pluto is named for the God of the underworld. If its moons are named after the ferryman of the underworld, the goddess of darkness and night (two thing often associated with death and the underworld), and the fearsome Hydra it its seems obvious to me that he next moon would be named Cerberus.

In Greek mythology he is the three headed dog that guards the underworld linking him to both Pluto and Charon, and vaguely to Nix as well. He also ties Hydra better in with the others as slaying the Hydra was Hercules’ second task and capturing Cerberus alive was his twelfth task.

Varonus, Varunus, Varunansh, Varunkhand, Varuni,
as in Hindu ancient science not mythology this planet was already discovered and was named Varun.. the moon, it’s part can be named accortdingly. In the order in the above line. Just for information all the boundries of the universe was already known to Indian seers(read scientists and thinkers), we already have huge traesure of astrophysical, astronomical and astrological knowledge that was discoevered whn there was no human in other parts of world or was primitive only.
I think christening a Hindu name which was named some 3-4000 yrs back would do some justice and also would be novelty to the nomenclature till now by NASA.
The sanskrit name has also been greekened by me already..

Clint Bechus on July 25, 2011 at 2:38 am

I think this new moon should be called Furrina.

As Pluto was downgraded from a mighty planet to a dwarf, I thought Furrina would be appropriate as she was once highly regarded, but now scientists can’t even decide what role she played.

She is all but forgotten.

Some suggest she was a water goddess, others suggest theft and a few suggest she was similar to the furies. For a moon surrounding an icy planet who had its title stolen from it. Water, theft and anger seem appropriate.

I think that by naming her as one of the moons we would be bringing a rightful God, and a rightful planet, back into the limelight.

Ignacio Elia on July 25, 2011 at 3:27 am

Pluto and its moons are named after darkness and death. Pluto is the greek god Hades (or at least, that’s the common consensus) was both grandson and great grandson (since Gaia and Uranus were both mother and son and wife and husband) of Gaia (Earth), Nyx is the representation of the Night, Charon (Kharon) is the ferryman of the dead over the river Styx, and Hydra is the daughter of Typhon (the most deadly monster of Greek mythology, often called “Father of all monsters”, last son of Gaia) and Echidna (“Mother of All Monsters”).

So, Hydra is a cousin in a 2nd degree of Hades (the planet Pluto) and Nyx (the moon Nix) is the great grand aunt of Hades and grand aunt of Hydra. Family relation ends there.
Kharon (the moon Charon) is the ferryman of the dead.

It cannot be Erebus (Erebos), because it did not have a body. Same with Tartarus (Tartaros).
If it was called Acheron (Akheron), it should have its place exchanged with Charon. It cannot be either. Same goes with Cerberus (Kerberos) and Hermes Chthonius (Khthonios).

Hecate (Hekate), the goddess of magic, necromancy and the haunting ghosts of the dead. She who issued forth from the underworld with a train of torch-bearing Lampades, demonic Lamiae, ghosts and hell-hounds. Hecate was the minister of Persephone. That would be an interesting name.

Hypnus (Hypnos), the god of sleep who dwelt in a silent realm on the borders of Hades. He issued forth from the underworld with his mother Nyx the Night. That’s a very interesting name too.

Lethe, the goddess of the underworld river of oblivion. The souls of the dead tasted her waters to forget their former lives. That too is a great name.

I would propose the name “Lethe”, since it is between Hydra (the killing monster) and Nix (the night the dead have to go through), thus allowing the ones who pass from life to death to drink from the waters of oblivion before being ferried by Charon to the house of Pluto.

Furthermore: If there are more moons around Pluto, then I suggest the contingency plan to name them: a) Orphnaeus [Orphnæus], b) Aethon [Æthon], c) Nycteus and d) Alastor, … after the dark horses of Pluto.

Erebus on July 25, 2011 at 4:22 am

In Greek mythology, Erebus ( /ˈɛrəbəs/), also Erebos (Ancient Greek: Ἔρεβος, “deep darkness, shadow”), was the son of a primordial god, Chaos, and represented the personification of darkness.
Erebus married his sister Nyx (goddess of the night) and their offspring include: Aether, Cer, Hemera, Charon, the Hesperides, Hypnos, the Moirae, Momus, Nemesis, Oneiroi, Phlegethon, Styx, and Thanatos.
In Greek literature the name Erebus is also used to refer to a region of the Underworld where the dead had to pass immediately after dying, and is sometimes used interchangeably with Tartarus.

Wray Dumont on July 25, 2011 at 4:22 am

How about the Greek God “Lêthô”, or “Lanthanô”, or “Lelathon”, meaning “to escape notice,” “move unseen” or “go unobserved.” He was the younger Titan god of air and a stealthy hunter. Lêthô seems like the most appropriate moniker since it has been orbiting Pluto for so long and despite all the advancements in our planet & star searching methods, it has not been detected until now. Lêthô would be my first choice since it’s short & sweet. It’s not too plain (with all those accents) but simple, and a name people will remember easily.

In ancient Roman myth, Mors is the personification of ‘Death’ equivalent to the Greek Thánatos.
In Roman Mythology, Mors is shown as a servant to Pluto, ending the life of a person after the thread of their life has been cut and escorting the dead person’s soul, or shade, down to the underworld’s gate.

As a small moon of Pluto, P4 (Mors) looks like a servant to Pluto.

Since the largest moon is named after Charon, the ferryman transporting the souls of the deceased to the land of the dead, why not name this one Atropos, after the Moirae who cut a person’s life-thread when their time was up, and chose how they died?

Alternatively they could rename Nix and Hydra, and have all three outer moons named after the three Moirae. From inner to outer:
Nix = Clotho, the spinner of the life-thread
P4 = Lachesis, who measured the life-thread
Hydra = Atropos, the cutter of the life-thread

But I guess that’s less likely to happen :)

Because Charon, Hydra, Pluto, and Nyx are all somewhat related to darkness, death, and the underworld, I’d suggest two names in keeping with the Hades motif. The first is Persephone, the unwilling wife of Hades whose absence from the earth four months a year brings winter. Alternatively, Cerberus would also be appropriate as the three-headed dog who keeps watch over the gates of the underworld.

In keeping with the Plutonian (Hades) nomenclature and makeup, why not Minos? He was the king of Crete who eventually became one of the three judges of death.

Or how about Virgil? According to Edith Hamilton, he’s the Roman poet who described Hades with the most lurid zest.

LETHE

The goddess of the underworld river of oblivion. The souls of the dead tasted her waters to forget their former lives.

KEUTHONYMOS

A mysterious underworld demon. He was the father of Hades cattleman Menoetes.

MINTHE

An underworld nymph. She was turned to dust by Persephone; her remains were then turned into a mint plant by the god Hades, who loved her.

Aeryn on July 25, 2011 at 7:25 am

Hypnos would have been cool. Pity we already gave that one to an asteroid. Maybe take a leaf from the book of Nix and call it Hipnos?

Phillip on July 25, 2011 at 7:27 am

Cerberus is fitting if it’s not being used. I personally prefer objects consistently being named after Greek/Roman mythology.
I’ve never understood the naming of Quaoar.

dither on July 25, 2011 at 7:27 am

Charon was the ferryman across the river Acheron, not the river Styx. Common mistake. I think I’d suggest the name “Acheron” for the moon, so it could be next to Charon and maybe *then* people will stop confusing the two.

What do you think? It goes with the Underworld theme that already exists, with the personification of darkness (Nyx), the ferryman (Charon), and the keeper of the dead (Hades/Pluto). Hydra was a guardian to the entrance of the Underworld at the lake of Lerna.

vyking on July 25, 2011 at 7:30 am

In sticking with the underworld theme, I’d have to suggest “Cerberus”, the three headed dog guarding the gates of the underworld and coincidentally the sibling of the Hydra. Hopefully they haven’t already named some other celestial body the same.

James Hutchings on July 25, 2011 at 7:33 am

Is there already something called Cerberus?

LEW on July 25, 2011 at 7:34 am

I vote for “Cerberus” (the three-headed guard dog of the gates to the Underworld) to go with the multi-headed theme of Hydra and the more general Underworld theme of Pluto and Charon and Nix.

Galena Krystine on July 25, 2011 at 7:37 am

Since it’s got kind of a dark theme going on there, I think it should be something like “Keres”- After the Fates of Death.
Or maybe even after Erebos, primordial god of darkness and consort of Nyx.

Puggle on July 25, 2011 at 7:37 am

Too easy – it should be named “Hypnos”: the god of sleep. Nyx is the mother of Hypnos. If they find another moon, or a nearby dwarf-planet, they could name it “Thanatos” – the twin of Hypnos.

Meredith on July 25, 2011 at 7:38 am

Proserpina or Persephone, the first being Roman and the second Greek. Persephone is the goddess of the underworld held captive by Hades(Pluto), just as moons are held captive by their planet’s gravitational field.

Persephone:

It should be Persephone, without a doubt. Persephone was innocent and abducted. The body was just discovered and probably “abducted” by Pluto’s gravity. It’s association with spring represent’s NASA’s new beginning. Besides, Pluto needs a queen.

Joshua on July 25, 2011 at 9:10 am

The moon should be named Allecto, one of the three furies. The names is fitting because her mother is Nyx and her father is Tartarus, or Erebus. Some sources also say that Allecto could be the daughter of Pluto, or Hades, and Persephone. Allecto’s name means endless and unceasing and was charged, along with her two sisters, with a responsibility to maintain order using punishment in the Underworld. Comment if you think Allecto should be the name of Pluto’s fourth moon.

Danie Manos on July 25, 2011 at 9:45 am

“Prosepina”, Pluto’s wife.

#1 Skillet Fan on July 25, 2011 at 9:46 am

Does it have to be from greek or roman mythology? What about Jangofett or Chewbaca?

Kimmy on July 25, 2011 at 9:51 am

Persephone, because she is Hades’ (Pluto’s) wife. Therefore, it would be right for Pluto to have a moon named “Persephone”.

But Hypnos, is also a good name. Because I think, I’m not really sure, he is the god of sleep. So, if they discover a 5th moon, then they could name that 5th moon “Hypnos.”

But overall in conclusion, I think Persephone would be a good name for the 4th moon. Because it was believed that when Hades’ (Pluto’s) wife was near, he would usually be calmer. So Persephone should probably be the name!

Zalinka on July 25, 2011 at 10:36 am

Considering the fact that all of Pluto’s other moons are named after mythological beings related to the Greek afterlife, the most sensible names would be either Styx or Hades. The Styx being the river of lost dreams that Charon ferries the dead souls across, and Hades being Lord of the underworld.

What about “Empousa”? The empousai were daemons (demons) of greek origin, having flaming hair and mismatched legs; one of bronze and the other of a donkey. Other than that, they looked like beautiful women. They would lure handsome young men into whatever sort of “lair” they had, where they would feast on the flesh of thier prey, drink their blood, and occasionally eat a bone or two.
I think this is just morbid and gloomy enough to continue the “Pluto” theme. If not, I believe the 4th moon should be named after a daemon or monster, rather than yet another god/goddess or whatnot.

cml on July 25, 2011 at 12:33 pm

While I like the “Persephone” idea (she is married to “Hades” -Greek, “Pluto” -Roman and a moon could be said to be married to its planet), I like the reasoning Maria Mediarito had for her suggestion “Lethe”. It’s up at the top if you want to read it. And whoever it was that suggested “Zues”, I would like to point out that we’ve already named a planet in our solar system “Zues”. “Jupiter” is the Roman name for “Zues”. I doubt they would want to call two celestial bodies in the same solar system the same person (even though it is a different name). Let’s save “Zues” for a supernova or a celestial storm or something that more represents the “King of the Gods” in mythology.

Rick P on July 25, 2011 at 1:41 pm

Very interesting and creative people have responded to this request. However, the suggestion of “Erebus” that was made earlier is certainly the most logical and appropriate choice. Given that Phobos and Deimos are moons for Mars and they are children of Aries (the Greek God Equivalent of Mars). Plus the other solar system examples that could be made here, a strong precedent has been set for this type of naming. The idea that Nix (Nyx was taken) should have her sibling and mate makes perfect sense. These two (2) gods share a lot with the underworld and Erebus will fit nicely into the mix of Pluto moons. Erebus should be elected as the name for this newly discovered moon, unless Stephen Colbert has his fan base vote for the moon to be named after him (lol).

Sisyphus. Meaning: “Sisyphean”, endless and unavailing, as labor or a task.

Once king of Corinth convicted to Hades by Zeus punished to roll a boulder uphill constant that ever tumbles downward once nearing the hill’s peak for revealing Zeus’ suspected identify. Sighted by chance, wrapped as a Eagle bearing a maiden away, abducted daughter of the river god Asopus. The stolen nymph daughter of Asopus, Aegina would become mother of Aeacus latter one of the three judges of Hades.

Sisyphus had also trick the god of death Thanatos sent by Zeus, however the king chained the deity thus prevented death to any individual until Ares intervene out of his own outrage when his foes survived death and war.
In his death in one tale also persuaded Persephone to return to the living world and scold his wife for not giving him a fit burial. But the king’s spirit refused to return back to the Underworld till he was forced back.

Jesse B-L on July 25, 2011 at 2:31 pm

Danny on July 25, 2011 at 2:47 pm

I, myself, have a interest in Greek Mythology (age of 11), and I would suggest the name none other like Thanatos. It is this name I would give the moon P4 because he was the personification of death, while Hades was the god the underworld where all the dead live the rest of their lives. Their is a relationship between the two beings. He delivers the dead to the Underworld sometimes and also when near, people can sense death or have some kind of death instinct. His Roman counterpart Mors would also be a name I would choose.

Orpheus, the lyre player, the only mortal to enter the underworld and leave alive;
Eurydice, Orpheus’ wife, whom he came to bring out of the underworld and almost succeeded;

or
Thanatos = a Greek daemon of death.

“I’d like to propose the name ‘Lethe’. Which is one of the rivers in the Underworld, which the dead bathe in so that may ‘be cleansed of their mortal memories” and be reborn or resurrected. If my memory does not fail me, ‘Lethe’ means concealment. To ‘conceal’ something is to hide it, and this 4th moon has only been discovered far later than the other 3 moons. So I suppose in some way, you could say ‘P4′ was in ‘hiding’.”

Tartarus – It is a deep, gloomy place, a pit, or an abyss used as a dungeon of torment and suffering that resides beneath the underworld in Greek mythology
Nekyia – rite by which ghosts were called up and questioned about the future

Collan Neal on July 25, 2011 at 4:25 pm

Tartarus is my most fitting Greek Mythological choice. Because it’s below Hades, i.e. very very far away, & Fittingly past Charon, at least in Greek mythology

Sin on July 25, 2011 at 4:32 pm

I love how so many people keep saying “it’s obvious”. How very arrogant.

Anyway, some suggestions:

Protogenoi (Primordial Gods who Are Responsible for the Universe):

Erebus: Embodiment of absolute darkness, and a realm in the Underworld. A place AND a god. Husband of Nyx, who is the goddess of night.

Tartarus: The great Hellpit, a place AND a god. He was the father of Typhon, by Gaia.

Lesser Known Gods:

Thanatos: God of death, a being who hates all, even the gods – whom he cannot kill.

Moros: God of doom, who deems when each and every thing shall die.

If anyone suggests “Kronos from Percy Jackson”, I’m going to keel over. That’s called Rick Riordan screwing up the myths. (IE, he combined Cronus, harvest Titan, with Chronos, the Protogenos of time. Completely unrelated.)

Bob on July 25, 2011 at 4:43 pm

How bout Odysseus or Ulyssees becuase he is the hero of the most important work of literature in history, and because he was inside Hades (or pluto) at one time.

Persephony. I’m surprised one of the moons hasn’t been named for her already. Look at how many lovers Jupiter had, and they’re all represented. I’m pretty sure most of us would agree, it would be fitting to have Pluto’s wife by his side.

There can be but one name for this “way out there” moon that has remained hidden all these years: Zaphod Beeblebrox or just Zaphod for short.
Zaphod Beeblebrox, of Hitchikers Guide to The Galaxy fame, was as I’m sure you all remember, the inventor of the Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster. Try and top that all you Greek Gods! But more to the point, like Pluto’s P4, Zaphod managed to hide his second head, most of the time. Actually we are naming P4 after that second head, which happens to have the same name as the first, but I digress. So there you go. What better appropriate characterization can there be?

ME!i!i!i! OBLIVOUS on July 25, 2011 at 5:35 pm

I don’t think it should have a name… i mean honestly, wouldn’t it be sorta cool if it could be the first recorded moon without a name?
besides, we name things because their ours, ask yourself s, do we own this?
and if it didn’t have a name than we could call it whatever we wanted.
if it is named most will be disappointed that the name was not of their choosing… so with great regret, they would name it anyone THEY please anyways. If they did listen to this we would all be outvoted no matter what.
So why name it?
keep it unnamed, it could be the most obvious thing ever!i!i!i!
not everything in mythology has a rightful name, not one that suites it to the full extent, so why give a name that will not be suitable.
i hope you stop naming things that aren’t yours and leave things as they are.

E.V. on July 25, 2011 at 5:39 pm

Definitely Erebus or Thanatos (Mors in Roman mythology). Either one would so totally fit into the theme.

Vanessa on July 25, 2011 at 6:15 pm

I agree with the suggestion of ‘Cerberus.’ It has the Greek Mythology/Underworld connection, and Cerberus is a relatively minor being (not a god or anything like that) so I think it would be fitting for a small moon. And no, I am not saying this only because others suggested it. I think it would be a good name, that’s all. Plus Cerberus is one of my favorite figures from Greek Mythology.

Dave Mitchell on July 25, 2011 at 6:17 pm

Pluto – a name given to Hades, under which he is identified by the Romans with Orcus.

Orcus – the ancient Roman god of the underworld, identified with the Greek Pluto, or Hades.

Orpheus – Greek Legend. a poet and musician, a son of Calliope, who followed his dead wife, Eurydice, to the underworld. By charming Hades(aka Pluto), he obtained permission to lead her away, provided he did not look back at her until they returned to Earth. But at the last moment he looked, and she was lost to him forever.

I say, name the moon, ORPHEUS

Zach on July 25, 2011 at 6:49 pm

Call the new moon Persephone. Cause Since in Greek/Roman mythology, she was the goddess of the underworld and was the wife of Hades/Pluto, so it would be appropiate to call it that.

Lorenzo on July 25, 2011 at 7:14 pm

I think Lethe is the best. Proserpina is second. I like it better than Persephone in order to keep the Mythology straight with Pluto. Cerberus has already been used. I thought I heard of something with the name Hypnos, but I could be wrong. I do like the name Mickey, but we need to have Lethe first, being the river, then if they discover a fifth moon, then we can slip a mickey into it :D

D-Rock on July 25, 2011 at 7:14 pm

How about Fenris? He was the dog in Greek mythology that was tethered down and kept on breaking his tethers. Fenris said that he would only cooperate if someone would stick their hand in his mouth. Tiw (the god after which Tuesday is named) was the only brave enough to do it and he got his hand bitten off.

Marshall Burlew on July 25, 2011 at 7:18 pm

I think it should be named after the Greek God of Death; Thanatos, because the moon is most likely; far away and it’ll be very dark just like Thanatos. Plus, Thanatos was a son of the 2nd moon of Pluto, Nyx in Greek Mythology. So, I think it should be named after, Thanatos.

Diamond on July 25, 2011 at 7:38 pm

I think Calypso. She was a lesser greek goddess and her name means the concealer. Pluto is now a “lesser planet” (dwarf planet) and this moon has been hidden-or concealed because it was just found.

Cerberus because he guards the gates of the underworld and if people mention the three headed dog they may recognize it. Cerberus is pretty popular and important to the myths of the underworld.
Or Persephone or as the Romans would say Proserpine. She does revolve almost half her life in hades. Why not? It makes sense.

So would Kampe, a prison guard of the underworld
Cerberus too, the prison guard of hell itself.

Acheron
Cocytus
Phlelgethon
Lethe
Styx

Maria Mediarito, you are somewhat right about Lethe

Jerm on July 26, 2011 at 7:56 am

I think it should be called Kevin Bacon. So in the future when people look at a star chart and are passing by Pluto on their way to where ever, they can see that Pluto has four moons. Three of them named in traditional form, then when they look at the fourth moon they could be like, “Kevin Bacon?!? Who the heck is Kevin Bacon?” It would be like a cosmic joke done by us on the future.

Aman Dalal on July 26, 2011 at 8:32 am

I think that Cerberus is the appropriate name for the planet. The three headed dog protects the gates of the Underworld.

ZMan on July 26, 2011 at 8:37 am

I know I’m not the first to suggest Cerberus, but it really is a good name. This 4th moon is the outermost moon, so it’s like a guard, just like Cerberus is the guard of the Underworld. It goes with the Greek theme and it really fits!

Margaret Lea on July 26, 2011 at 9:37 am

Tho i have not read all the entries, i would like to echo Maria M’s vote for “Lethe” as the name for Pluto’s 4th moon. It is a positive and cleansing presence in the midst of all that darkness in the Underworld. (Land of the Dead)

Lethe is a river there, a drink from which is believed by the ancient Greek’s gods, causes oblivion and forgetfulness as the sins of the past are washed away in her waters.

Perhaps a reliever of Suffering, making Hell, not such a bad place to be.
i once heard “If You are in Hell, keep going!!!!!”

A Ward on July 26, 2011 at 10:27 am

I think “Erinyes” would be an appropriate name. Persephone would be good as well, but she was too significant to be a moon of Pluto as she is a goddess. Erinyes, however, are associated strongly with Pluto / Hades and are born from Nyx, which is already a moon of Pluto.

Jibra'il on July 26, 2011 at 10:51 am

How about Urizen (a pun for “your reason” and is greek for “to limit”). Urizen is one of the four Zoas who make up the four-fold individual (P4 = four-fold individual). Furthermore, Urizen is an Eternal who is separated from the rest who then creates the fallen material universe, Ulro. Since Pluto is no longer considered as a planet, Urizen is actually befitting for the situation.

Sean Jeffries on July 26, 2011 at 4:05 pm

I believe that the moon should be called Acheron the river of pain it fits the underworld theme and then if all else fails it should be named Elysium after the Elysium fields where the dead go if the were heroes or good people. Hoped I helped!

Ejaaz on July 26, 2011 at 4:17 pm

I would say erinyes the romans called them: Dirae (they tortured those who had done evil deeds (i.e. kill someone, break an oath) they’re also kind of like Hades/Pluto’s helpers, so i think naming the new moon this would be appropriate)

Anthony on July 26, 2011 at 4:33 pm

Perhaps Cocytus/Kokytos, an underworld river, or Moros, the personification of doom, the brother of the Fates/Moirae, and the son of Nyx. The already mentioned Persephone or Thánatos would also make good names.

ME again!i!i!i! on July 26, 2011 at 5:14 pm

wow… naming a moon of a lesser planet… how pathetic.
i mean honestly, have you no pity? or shame?
it’s not even ours… that’s like naming an ancient ruin “pudding” it may not seem insulting but judging by how much things have changed the languages and mythology is all mixed up.
would you truly like any of these names for yourself? i mean how ridiculous does being called “Cerberus” sound? i wouldn’t like any of these names for me.
we name things because they show ownership of an object.
we don’t own this.
its not ours.
how would you like to be owned?
don’t name things that aren’t yours to keep.
not one name in the universe can describe something in full detail and divinity.
don’t name it. let us call it what we want.
thank you,
Please stop naming things that aren’t yours, Sincerely,
ME!i!i!i!i!i!i

Chuck on July 26, 2011 at 5:16 pm

Why don’t they name it after another 4th….Shemp.

Jen on July 26, 2011 at 5:52 pm

Well if you stick with mythology, then there could be lots. I like the suggestion ‘Persephone’ and Lethe, Erinyes, Erebus, Cerberus, Tantalus, Acheron, Cocytus, and Phlegethon all work.
And for those who think it should be a happier one, you could name it Elysium because that’s a good thing in Hades.

Heiwajima on July 26, 2011 at 5:55 pm

Cerberus! If not then it can be Nyx, Morpheus, Hypnos, or Tarturus. We need to stick to the whole underworld, creepy-dead theme.

bex on July 26, 2011 at 6:19 pm

“XERXES” The right name for the fourth moon orbiting pluto.

Frank A. Lucas on July 26, 2011 at 9:02 pm

“XERXES” xerxes would be the exact name for the fourth moon of pluto.

Kate on July 26, 2011 at 9:03 pm

And here are the meanings, in case you were wondering . . .

ALECTO
One of the three Furies. Her name means unceasing, and she is constantly angry.
MAGAERA
Another of the three Furies. Sister to Alecto and Tisiphone, along with the three Fates. Her name means to grudge, and she is always jealous of everyone.
TISIPHONE
Tisiphone is – along with Alecto and Magaera – one of the three Furies. Her name means avenging murder, and she will punish anyone for anything.

I chose the three Furies because they relate to Hades (Greek form of Pluto).

EPIMETHEUS
His name means afterthought. I chose his name because even though Pluto has been known of for a while (81 years), they have just discovered this moon.
PLOUTON
This name is the original Greek form of Pluto, and I thought it would fit that Pluto’s moon would have a similar name as its planet.
EOS
This name means dawn. I chose it for Pluto’s moon because it has been in the “dark” (or night) for 81 years (since Plutos discovery), and it is only now that it “comes to light” (or dawn). Get it?
KRONOS/CRONUS
Father of Hades/Pluto. Need I say more?
LETO
Her name means hidden/forgotten. Pluto’s fourth moon has been hidden, and now it’s discovered. Is any more explaination necessary?
ORPHEUS
This name means the darkness of the night. Hidden in shadows up until now, P4 is truly in the darkness of the night because it is so far away from the sun.
ORION
Meaning boundary/limit, this name is fitting because Pluto is one of the farthest planets from Earth to be discovered – making it a boundary.
SELENE
This name means moon. Do I have to say more?
THANTOS
Means death in Greek. And since Hades/Pluto is the god of the dead, it seems fitting.

steph on July 26, 2011 at 9:12 pm

Why not Hemera. She is the greek goddess of the daylight and the sun. Then there would be both darkness and daylight.Nyx and Hemera.

Eyewitness on July 26, 2011 at 9:48 pm

What is this thing for Cerberus? When did the three-headed dog who guarded the gates of Hades become a populist cause celebre?

Andrew on July 26, 2011 at 9:54 pm

It should be named Furiae or Furia
It is a long story but basically Furiae is Latin for Furies, (Furia is the single tense) and The Furies are the helpers of Pluto or the punishers and tormenters of souls… What? They said it might be scary.

John on July 26, 2011 at 9:59 pm

Since the moon is so small – a mere 13-34km across – I’d suggest Obol: the coin which was placed in the mouth of the dead in order to pay the ferryman, Charon, for passage across the river Styx.

Pratibha on July 26, 2011 at 11:00 pm

Why not Albus? Moon is considered white (Albus means white/pure) and it would be a fitting tribute to Albus Dumbledore, the great wizard, considering that we have just bid goodbye to the last Potter film Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. It would also encapsulate our times — the Potter era.

Persephone has already been suggested, but what about Kore or Proserpina, which are alternate names for Persephone? Personally, I would like to see it named Kore.

bugattiforlife283 on July 27, 2011 at 4:45 am

i was thinking Tartarus. its a perfect name for a small floating probably barren wasteland in deep space. just think: Pluto, and its moons Charon, Nix, Hydra, and TARTARUS. it’s an awesome name. and, if you guys are only looking for greek/roman gods and/or goddesses and monsters or whatever, Cerberus is a good name. but please please PLEASE name it Tartarus.

kazoolarlina on July 27, 2011 at 6:02 am

it should be named Styx, after the river Styx opon which gods swear oths
and it is the river which Charon ferries souls across. it just works

Zuki on July 27, 2011 at 6:19 am

It’s clear this meaningless moon of a defrocked planet is getting the full Greek & Roman treatment. It’s all very tedious and in need of “something completely different.” I would suggest the new rock be called “Billy”

RABIA on July 27, 2011 at 6:37 am

i will name it “Plutoid” one can guess why.

leslie on July 27, 2011 at 6:39 am

Aletheia- relating to Lethe, but meaning unconcealment or Truth-see Heidegger

Michael on July 27, 2011 at 7:01 am

per the story thats already being told by the names of the moons already, what is needed is the river Styx to be more complete. Cerebus would be a great name but from a storyboard perspective … Styx should be next.

Lawrence on July 27, 2011 at 7:27 am

In keeping with the Roman theme, the clear choice is: Proserpina. This is the equivalent of Persephone in Greek mythology. Were we to name it Persephone, the sub-planet would need to be called Hades.

Dominic Toscano on July 27, 2011 at 7:35 am

I’m thinking either:
-Cerberus
-Persephone
-Styx
Basically any figure or object from Greek/Roman mythology commonly associated with Hades/Pluto.

jesse on July 27, 2011 at 8:18 am

How about Proserpina, or Proserpine, or Prosperine? Pluto is the Roman god of the underworld, hence the Roman name Proserpina instead of Persephone, the Greek name. Besides, there’s already and asteroid named, 399 Persephone.

Annime on July 27, 2011 at 11:45 am

Daimon- the greek derivative of “demon” or a entity of knowledge. Like this moon, it remains far from the pantheon of gods and goddesses but remains a Deified hero or soul that is blessed enough to remain close at their periphery. This moon is unknown to have any major impact on our space research (demons were either helpful or harmful) and like a demon, it’s timeless existence is unknown until found but is nonetheless the intermediary spirit between men and gods, or in our case space and humans.

Dilia Bobadilla on July 27, 2011 at 11:55 am

In keeping with tradition any “mithological name” would do. But who has all the time to read about mithology. P4 (Pluto’s fourth moon) is readily interpreted as Pluto’s fourth moon. It makes more sense to me (even scientifically) than all of the inventions of the goddesses. It comes to be as a natural hairstyle. Right???

I think it is time we begin honoring modern heros who’s brought inspiration to the newer generations. It is because of our modern space program that these kinds of discoveries are being made. When asked “What is Pluto?” the top two answers will most likely be – the demoted planet or the cartoon dog. So, what better name for a mini moon than “Pup”. I vote to name the new moon Pup. It’s probably what Disney would name Pluto’s puppy. Regards.

Cerberus seems to have the most votes so far….I know next to nothing, but am always interested in learning about this stuff…perhaps we should keep it simple from now on and name it Francis, or James…..although we could just look at it without naming it and be equally satisfied..after all it is a restless evil, and endless i should add. Eyewitness on July 27, 2011 at 7:52 pm

I have a name suggestion for “P4″ from Greek mythology, but first, let me dispel an assumption which seems rampant on this blog: the Pluto/death/Hades theme is not even present in the existing nomenclature. Hydra, one of the existing, named moons, is not part of the afterlife/underworld narrative at all.

On the arguable assumption that any greek mythological source is consistency enough, I suggest Atalanta. In Greek mythology, Atalanta was distracted during a foot race (running) by each of three golden apples, supplied to her competitor Melanion (alternately, Hippomenes) by Aphrodite. Whenever Atalanta passed Melanion (Hippomenes) in the race, he would roll one of the apples ahead of her and she, distracted by their irresistable value and beauty (gold), would allow herself to pursue the apple and neglect her rival in the race, Melanion (Hippomenes). Thus, he won the race, unlike many before him, and won her hand in marriage as his prize.

There is something charming to me about the imagery of this little moon “chasing after” the three bigger, more prominant, famously named moons, like Atalanta always trying to catch–or catch up to–each of the golden apples.

My only concern is, admittedly, the name sounds somewhat too closely like the city of “Atlanta,” as though the named moon might unintentionally provide marketing promotion for the American city. The Greek masculinized form is Atalantos, perhaps a little less suggestive of the southern metropolis in Geogia. In either form, the translation is “equal value, equivalent merit” (from the Greek, a- “one, together” + talanton “weight, value” (cf. talent).

I also seriously suggest the name “Venetia.” Not only is it lovely, but the charming vision of that little girl with her active mind gazing at the heavens brings to my mind the picture of the diminutive “P4″ “running with the big dogs,” Charon, Nyx, and Hydra, who have already made themselves known to earthly observation. I am sure the astronomers at the Lowell Observatory never expected a schoolgirl to “keep up with” their inquirying minds, however, famously, eleven year old Venetia Burney most certainly did.

Lily on July 27, 2011 at 7:55 pm

I propose the fourth moon of Pluto be named after ‘Erebos’, which translates to ‘darkness’. This is in line with the fourth moon being out of sight all these while. In addition, Erebos was the husband of Nyx (the moon named Nix), and the father of Kharon (the moon named Charon), their son. It would be nice to have the moons being closely linked to each other as one family.

Mike on July 27, 2011 at 8:40 pm

The naming rights for the new Pluto moon should be auctioned (with a high reserve of say, 1 billion dollars) to an individual, company or country and the money donated to famine relief in Africa.

Carmela on July 27, 2011 at 8:40 pm

Keeping up with the death/underworld theme, I think the new moon should be called Anubis, after the Egyptian jackal-God of the Underworld, or, Hel the Norse Goddess of Death and the Afterlife

S.M. on July 27, 2011 at 8:45 pm

I think it should be Cerberus, Cronus, Persephone, Tartarus, Acheron, Cocytus, Phlegethon, Lethe, or Styx.

Cerberus-Pluto’s three-headed dog
Cronus-Pluto’s father
Persephone-Pluto’s wife
Tartarus-The darkest, deepest part of the underworld
Acheron,Cocytus,Phlegethon, Lethe, Styx- The 5 rivers of the underworld

Michael on July 27, 2011 at 8:58 pm

This isn’t a name but rather a thought…there are a lot of names to choose from, but everyone seems to be getting at the fact that it took a long time to find this one. Maybe naming it as some ultimate “hiding” or darkness names might not hold true if a fifth or more moons are found in the future?

Hi,
I like “The Moon With No Name”, said with a Scottish accent, as it is theatrical, implies mysteriousness (is “mysteriousness” even a word?), and is my idea.
But it’s also literary or cinematic in origin, I think, so probably not on theme with the existing naming convention for planets and moons.
It’s also five words, which doesn’t fit well with the single-word convention, either. But as we’re running out of cool sounding, mythical, single words anyway, why not take the opportunity to break out into a new, multi-word-celestial-body-naming era?

Otherwise, Maria Mediarito’s idea of “Lethe” sounds good, if her justification is correct.

“Cerberus” is already overused (see “running out of cool-sounding, mythical, single words” argument, above), but a good fit to the context.

“Cerebrus” would be a great way to get everyone confused and tongue-tied, mixing it up with “Cerberus”.

Anyone know how I could waste another five minutes?

Mateus on July 28, 2011 at 5:31 am

Let’s name it Fifi, Minnie’s pet and Pluto’s first girlfriend. What about a bit of fun?

Heracles on July 28, 2011 at 5:47 am

Heracles is Greek. Hercules is Roman. Get your mythology straight.

Hana on July 28, 2011 at 6:30 am

Pwinto..!!!

Cecilia on July 28, 2011 at 7:14 am

I think it should be named Artemis.

Artemis was the daughter of Zeus and Leto. She was Apollo’s twin sister.

Artemis was nearly always cold (it would be cold to be that far from the sun!). The only thing Artemis loved besides her family were her floppy-eared dogs.

Artemis was the goddess of the hunt and the goddess of the moon.

Marlene Dilla on July 28, 2011 at 7:26 am

The best name is Cerberus, for sure

Mark on July 28, 2011 at 7:36 am

Definitely Mickey. Leave the Roman shit in the past. How long are we going to go on scrambling around for Roman names? Pathetic! Lighten up people and call it Mickey! :)

Heather on July 28, 2011 at 8:05 am

I agree with Binaya, it should be Styx after the river Styx. What a great word!

Leo V on July 28, 2011 at 8:29 am

I think Cerberus is too big a name to call a “mini-moon”. And Lethe and Persephone are too beautiful. I like Erebos though. Isn’t he Nyx’s husband? I also think Ixion is nice. Both are not that well known, in other words, small names. Small names for a small moon.

Dee on July 28, 2011 at 8:32 am

My suggested name would be Demeter. Life after death. That to me sound like the right name.

Kero on July 28, 2011 at 9:05 am

Totally Erebus: Spirit of darkness; son of Chaos. He is a Roman god.

coltrain on July 28, 2011 at 9:34 am

I think it should be named,

“I used to be a moon of a planet, but now I’ve been reduced by
some narcissistic so-called scientists to being a moon of a mere
rock, pretentiously renamed a newfangled moniker called a ‘plutoid’ .”

I’m just sayin’…

Michael Creamer on July 28, 2011 at 9:37 am

A fitting name would be Perseus for the newly discovered moon

Sujin on July 28, 2011 at 9:45 am

I really think it should be named Persephone

Ice on July 28, 2011 at 9:52 am

Persephone in modern English—also called Kore

Pete Byle on July 28, 2011 at 10:14 am

@ Maria Mediarito …….. I vote for your suggestion. I think it can’t be anything but LETHE. I like to think that naming it in respect to mythology is the way to go.

Nicole on July 28, 2011 at 10:15 am

My vote is for “Apollymi”, the greek goddess of destruction. Also referred to as the “Destroyer”.

alexandra on July 28, 2011 at 10:18 am

its should be Enma, also known as Yama, is a deity from Buddhist and Hindu tradition who judges the dead with either reward or punishment in Jigoku (a world in the afterlife usually referred to in English as the Japanese “Hell”).
Or, Cerberus the multiheaded dog which guards the gates of The Underworld.

Julius Josley on July 28, 2011 at 10:36 am

Name for the fourth moon around the “planet” Pluto: Pandora. What will Pandora reveal? This moon was in hiding for about 71 years since the discovery of Pluto, and yet Pluto still has not completed one orbit around the sun.

Morpheus

michael on July 28, 2011 at 11:25 am

The only logical name for Pluto’s fourth moon is ‘Chuck Norris’.

Silverius Materi on July 28, 2011 at 12:10 pm

I believe Erebus might be an appropriate name. He is the god of shadows, brother and, in most myths, male consort to Nyx. Keep all the names familial for the moons. Father, Mother and Son.

Anna Piszar on July 28, 2011 at 12:29 pm

I propose the name Hecate, goddess of magic and necromancy or Proserpina whom Pluto took as his bride.

jerry on July 28, 2011 at 12:54 pm

I VOTE PEDRO

Pearl Playdinn on July 28, 2011 at 1:07 pm

Persephone (or Proserpina since the trend is to go with the Roman variant) or Cerberus. Definitely. You can’t have Pluto without those two.

Cayenne on July 28, 2011 at 2:41 pm

Boo, Chione is an asteroid. Persephone, Pandora and Proserpina also taken by asteroids. Pandora is also a moon of Saturn.

Maybe “Momus”, god of satire, mirth and mockery. Son of Nyx (Nix – so would be sibling to Charon). Charon, Nix, Hydra and Momus.

Fonda Zenofon on July 28, 2011 at 3:35 pm

The fourth moon of Pluto could be called – Tesera – which is the Greek word for the number 4. Tesera sounds Terestial, which I think is appropriate.

Molly on July 28, 2011 at 3:46 pm

I think the new moon should be named Selene, after the Greek Goddess of the moon.

It adds a happy air to the planet’s neighborhood because Selene’s love, Endymion, evaded death by being granted eternal life, symbolizing that death doesn’t always win. Even if Endymion wasn’t eternally youthful so he shriveled up.

I think for once, the tradition of naming things in the universe after things in mythology should be broken just one time. Why not name Pluto’s fourth moon Atlantis, after NASA’s last mission launch of Atlantis and its retirement. After all, Atlantis was launched by NASA and NASA did discover this moon.

We shall name it Sibyl…from greek mythology Cumaean Sibyl

Jarrek Holmes on July 29, 2011 at 1:53 pm

The name should be Stygian, a greek word for gloomy or such and is related to the river styx, appropriate and fitting, also because it keeps with tradition and would be outside the box and fitting for a 4th planet. This is because it also is within the Japanese mythology that the fourth number is unlucky somewhat like stygian. A mix between two mythology, good name.

Jarrek Holmes on July 29, 2011 at 6:04 pm

I mean moon, same difference

Hypnos. I saw someone else say it and it just seemed to fit so well. From wikipedia : “In Greek mythology, Hypnos (“sleep”) was the personification of sleep; the Roman equivalent was known as Somnus. His twin was Thánatos (“death”); their mother was the primordial goddess Nyx (“night”). His palace was a dark cave where the sun never shines.”

They should call it Hypnos, the Greek god of sleep, or Persephone, Hades’ wife. Hypnose because hes the god of sleep, I don’t really know how else to explain that. Persephone, well because she’s Hades’ wife. It could also be named Tartarus, where Zeus trapped the titains. But, I’d go with Persephone.

I vote for Cerberus. I don’t think a -350 degrees frozen up moon should be named after Persephone, the goddess of spring. and pokemon? seriously? people 200 years from now will look back and facepalm at the stupidity of their ancestors.

Allan on October 10, 2011 at 3:20 am

I suggest calling it Styx, where the first two letters S and T are in honor of Alan Stern, founder of the Pluto Underground and leader of the New Horizons mission. Because Styx and Sterns can break our Browns.

Richard on October 17, 2011 at 8:05 pm

Cerberus (3 headed dog that guarded the underworld) or Styx (name of a river in the underworld)

@ Emma on July 25, 2011 at 2:52 am
Phobos and Deimos (Panic and Fear)are already the moons of Mars.

to all who suggested Cerberus…
Yes while it’s true that that three-headed dog is associated with Pluto, it is also true that it guarded the entrance to the underworld and it will be unfitting if the guardian will be “far” from what it’s guarding.

LETHE would be a more suitable name since it’s the river of forgetfulness. This new moon almost was forgotten.

Demosthenes on May 19, 2012 at 2:56 pm

Why does everybody all say they vote for one thing or another? The people making the actual decision don’t care what you think. And why do we have to name everything we see? It’ll just cause unneeded sadness that the majority of people didn’t get what they wanted. We don’t have the right to name this moon, especially if we’ve only discovered it this late. And I agree with ME!!!!!!! in that we should leave it at nothing. Everyone could call it what they believed was the right name. And there isn’t really a “right” name. Names don’t suit anything perfectly; the only truly fitting name is no name at all. Anyway, does the name of a moon some 10 billion miles away really mean this much to you. IT DOESN’T MATTER what some ball of ice out in space is called, so why spend your time arguing about this. There’s no right decision, so don’t make a decision. Put your time into something productive, like learning to capitalize the “I” in your posts.

bleue on May 21, 2012 at 11:46 am

Li Yang on November 16, 2012 at 4:54 pm

to all who chose ceberus that idea had just been taken for an asteroid I choose Thanantos the guardian of the doors of death

Mythology Know-It-All on November 27, 2012 at 3:09 pm

I believe Pluto’s fourth moon should be named for:

Cerberus- the 3-headed guard dog of the underworld
Persephone – the beautiful but ill-fated wife of Hades
Proserpina – the Roman form of Persephone
Thanatos – the god and personification of death
Mors – the Roman form of Thanatos
Tartarus – the deepest, darkest part of the Underworld. Where invincible beings are imprisoned.
Erebos – Greek god of darkness
Styx – the river that separates the realm of the living from the realm of the deceased. Styx actually means hate. The gods would use the water from the Styx to tell if someone, mortal or immortal, was telling the truth.
Acheron – the river in the Underworld that is the river of woe.
Cocytus – the river of lamentation. If dead souls were not buried properly, they would drift across Cocytus’s banks for all of eternity.
Lethe – the river of forgetfulness, in which dead souls bathe in to forget who they were during life.
Phlegethon – the river of Hades’s fire
Hecate – Greek goddess of darkness. It is said that she roams in darkness with her dogs and represents the terrors of the night. She is also goddess of magic and sorcery.
Trivia – Roman form of Hecate

There are many more options, but I don’t have time to type them all.

Resuna on February 13, 2013 at 8:50 am

Mickey and Goofy, as per Robert Anton Wilson.

Or start over and name them Cocytus, Caïna, Antenora, Ptolemea, Judecca, as per Larry Niven.
