11/11: Why is today so special

11 is a very odd number and has been subject to much interpretation over the ages. According to Yahoo! News, medieval scholars believed that while most numbers had positive and negative qualities, the number 11represented pure evil. Find out what “eleven” literally means here.

Numerologists also think there is something special about the number 11. In numerology, 11 is a master number. Most numbers reduce; for example, 11 would reduce to two by adding the digits, but 11 is considered to be “higher” version of two. 11 is “highly charged” and “difficult to handle” according to numerologists who believe integrating your internal number is important to self-revelation. To them, 11 represents illumination and sensitivity.

Eleven is a unique number in other ways, too. Many people profess to see the time 11:11 on clocks more than other specific minutes, and certain outlying groups have suggested that this represents the 1,111 spirits that are protecting us. Prominent psychic Uri Geller has connected the number 11 to tragic world events, including when JFK’s assassination, the attacks on the World Trade Center, and many others. Other people have asked whether it is just a coincidence that bankruptcy is called “Chapter 11.” Psychologists call this a post-hoc analysis, which is when people assign significance to something that is just a random occurrence after the fact. Read about other odd 11/11 coincidences here.

Last year an uncanny number of birds seemed to be falling out of the sky simultaneously. This confluence of events sparked the public imagination and prompted us to introduce a wonderfully useful word for trying to grapple with coincidences: “pareidolia.” Find out what it means exactly and what it says about the anxiety that seemingly synchronistic experiences can create here.

What do you think of these theories?

Where I live, today is 11/8. Never heard of a time zone that’s ahead by three days.

I think that we assign meaning to the mundane in order to give ourselves something to look forward to or even just to turn something average into something extraordinary. And what’s wrong with that?

It’s all about the Elevenses!

Ever watch the movie 11-11-11…It is really a very interesting movie..
In the month of November alot of things start happening 11:11 pm, Evil would start trying to contact you and there is angels trying to stop them…On the 11th day, at 11:11 pm thats when the gates of evil open…Alot of people die on this day too, see for a pattern…Which is so true having to see what goes on every night with me is very weird, White spirits are good so to say angels, black spirits are bad so to say demons out to get you, Let hope everyone has strong beliefs…Very scary stuff going down!!

ruby on November 9, 2012 at 1:48 pm

but it’s not 11/11 today, it’s 11/9 (US style) or 9/11 (european style)

Archon on November 9, 2012 at 7:57 pm

Because it’s the ninth, not the eleventh!

Indeed, 11 is a very interesting number… one could joke and say that half of 11 is 1. 11 squared, 121, is an exotic number (its digits can be rearranged to form a different but equivalent expression, in this case 11^2). The first five rows of Pascal’s Triangle- 1, 1 1, 1 2 1, 1 3 3 1, and 1 4 6 4 1- are the first five powers of 11 (starting with the zeroth power). And there are many more ways in which 11 is special, both in and out of mathematics. But 11 is extremely special to me, in that one year ago today, I was given the privilege of celebrating 11/11/11 with the New York Times crossword puzzle for that day.

That aside, though I don’t see myself joining the military, today I salute all the men and women who have served, and are serving in, our military, and keep all 300 million of us safe day in and day out. Whether we realize it or not, we all owe them a debt; and today, Veterans Day, we pay some of it back. Thanks, veterans… we love you.

So Last year it would be even weirder because it was 11-11-11. LOL

Courtenay on November 11, 2012 at 2:15 pm

Ummmm… how about cutting the bizarre numerology and superstitions, and pointing out that 11/11 – the eleventh day of the eleventh month – is the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice (at 11 o’clock) that ended the First World War… hence why it is a day of remembrance in so many countries? Have some thoughtfulness and respect, Dictionary.com – please!

Why did I stop receiving “the hot word” along w/ the dictionary.com word of the day?

SHayes on November 13, 2012 at 9:44 am

The number 11 is a good and bad number for me. It just depends on the month and day.

Maya on November 14, 2012 at 10:10 am

Some people think 11 is like our modern day 13 that it’s bad luck

SHayes on November 16, 2012 at 9:34 am

Probably is. Friday the 3 is literally a bad day for me. :(

Jeanna on November 29, 2012 at 12:42 pm

I think 11 is just a number, 1 more than 10 and 1 less than 12. There is no significance to this number otherwise…

My name is anonymous on November 29, 2012 at 4:46 pm

There’s a chinese holiday that day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was born on 5/11/51. 5 plus 5 plus1= 11 so I have double 11s in my birth date. I have always liked the #11. Consider it my lucky # and I love the way eleven sounds….think it is a really sensuous word. NO ONE can convince me it stands for evil. It is beautiful. Here is my theory: this # is made up of two 1s standing side by side, like a couple. Therefore it should symbolize everlasting LOVE. Now everybody, go out and spread the word! Maureen M.

I went into a 7-11 on November the 11th in 2011 and bought a big gulp(32oz). After paying I received 11 cents in change. Even weirder, the cashiers name was Carl.

If there are that many 11/11 coincidences, maybe they really aren’t just chance.
