Hmmm! The modernity we live in now. A phone is to call up by dialling number as it thinks.
Shall it be scary? Or shall I say ohhh the possibilities; I usually like science and its progressive motion to future advancement. However, having read above, I don’t know which route to take. Let’s say it is exciting, yet perhaps not. The BIG BROTHERs are abound and watch too; they will be very excited, and eager to take advantage abusing the technology.

PS: Yet to notice any comments, for I can be pretty sure that mine will not be first to post. Is there any interference going on, spamming or such, as usual? Now why is this notion? I don’t have a personal internet, hence, I use school and not in school for a few days.

This is definitely amazing technology that we’re looking at here, but all I see is another route to laziness. Really? An app that helps you think of a person you’re going to call/send a text? That is just plain laziness in my opinion. How many more seconds would it take you to go to your phone book on your phone and type in the name of the person you want to communicate with? Just a few seconds more. Don’t get me wrong, I think it is wonderful how they are able to do this, but how they’re planning on using it is laziness.

This is a horrible idea. All I can think about when reading this article are all of the futuristic stories I’ve read in which the government completely controls our lives and can read everything we think and feel. Loss of privacy within our own minds will simply lead to the downfall of humanity!

I believe that this is amazing! I would love to try it. I have found myself thinking of where I was at when I heard a certain song, so I happen to associate a song to the place I was at.

I can’t say that there is particularly anything wrong with this, but all the same, it just doesn’t seem right to me somehow. Thoughts are supposed to be private, and that’s why they happen inside your head. And frankly, the whole ‘dialing a number by thinking it’ thing is just stupid, one more way for us to be lazy and move less. And what if I happened to think the numbers 911 by accident? It would be interesting, to say the least. Aside from all that, this is very interesting, and I congratulate whoever eventually perfects it, because frankly, the complexity of science and technology that would go into it are mind boggling.

I teach reading to first year college students. While 75% pick up words with little problem, the other 25% has sooooo many problems they fail semester after semester. I think this research might help my non-vocabulary students.

What is up with all these grammar mistakes??? Anyway, this is kind of stupid. It’s all from a set list of things, so it doesn’t count. it’s like speed chat where you have to pick the words you want to say from a list. Although soon we will probably have developed something beyond the speed chat brain contraption.

I think the possibilities are endless – both good and bad! Of course it could be a bad thing if someone uses it for the wrong reasons (hacking other’s thoughts, Minority Report, other moral grey areas), but this could be really cool, too! I heard about scientists hooking up people’s brains to a computer that controls a robot arm – and they’ve been able to control the arm with thoughts! This would mean a lot for amputees!

With great power comes great responsibility, yo!

Either way, I hope they find a more meaningful use for this than dialing a phone with a thought…

I think this is great. More than 90% of our brains have been dormant. Hopefully we will use our brains more than our brawn. This also takes away the need for translation.

I think if they made an app that will be able to read the brains is kind of cool. I also see good and bad outcomes to this. The bad is that it could cause people to be lazy and the good is that it would be a big help for those who are multi-taskers.

Well, I thought that the brain was more holographic in functioning…but Rowan’s comment is thought provoking…true, with great power comes great responsibility!

I have been doing translation work from English into Tamil and vice-versa since 1984 and found that my work had speeded up phenomenally after a mere 5 years’ period of regular work. My friend who is a psychotherapist said something about a neural bridge being formed between the two areas of the languages in my brain which helped the process of translation to speed up. So do we have more than on Broka area in our brains, one for each language known?

Unforeseeable consequences will emerge in the infant stage of this technology & as it progresses, but i personally like the idea telepathy becoming a reality in people, telepathy A.I. on the other hand is kinda of a sci fi horror story though…

This will for SURE make texting while driving so much safer.

What would be even better is if they created a program/computer chip that did the work of the Broca area of the brain — to help all the people, like my uncle Buzz, who have suffered damage to it & have difficulty speaking.

I hope it is better than voice recognition for calling – I can’t imagine the number of times my phones have not recognized a name that I spoke to initiate a call. How does one repeat a thought slowly and clearly?

I have to agree with Lulwut’s comment: the technological implications may be fascinating, but the privacy implications are real and terrifying. When I think of things like the FBI using the Patriot Act to randomly tap phone calls, the idea of having my very thoughts displayed on my phone becomes an irrevocable invasion of privacy. “Thought police” would instantly spring from the pages of Orwellian fiction to become a real-life, living nightmare. I believe in the privacy and dignity of the individual; and I resent the loss of privacy that has become a true concern over the last decade. And my concern isn’t the police, per se, but advertising. I eventually see this technology being sorely abused by marketers and phone companies who already monitor our Internet usage and inundate us with endless amounts of ads. What will we do when they can anticipate our very thoughts? If you are driving down the road and have a passing thought about the flowers you see; suddenly your phone, inbox, and mailbox explode with blast emails and coupons from landscapers, flower shops, hardware stores, and any other business that is even remotely connected with pants. I am torn; the technology itself seems fascinating and exciting, but it has too much potential for abuse for me to consider it beneficial for mankind.

Umm, it sounds all well and good but personally that would be kinda bad to me. I would feel totaly devoid of privacy if we doveloped this kind of technology. That means that the government could use this kind of tech to “real people’s minds.” I personally don’t trust it. It is amazing technology and it would be fun to have it but it just doesn’t feel right to me.

If you have read “Ender’s Game” you know where this technology is going to lead. Seriously who need another app on their phone; where on the other hand you can redirect the focus towards video games, for example: you pick up a buttonless controller and focus on what you want to do in the game and VOALA/TaDa game does it for you, so now there wont be people that keep complaining they don’t have enough time to press the button (just hope it wont freeze on you)

The advance in technology is amazing although i wouldn’t want to text my brain on some device without a few years of trial and error. And random thought : If it picks up everything we think, then think about it. Men think about sex alot…lol

When you look at it from the comfort angle yes it does sound terrific, but just the thought of tapped lines and jammed phones of today’s spy centrals makes it a little scary to think of a device that can mess with your very thoughts. Like every new technology there’s always someone who will find a negative use to it. Sometimes I think we humans are not prepared as a species for such advanced technology, we are not mature enough.

They are way past this if you look at studies using non-practical technologies such as functional magnetic resonance imaging and PET scans they can tell what color you are thinking of and the basic shape of objects you are envisioning…and this isn’t from a pre-selected list but rather from any infinite variety…I believe the magazine I read about it in was last year’s ‘Discover’ in the issue that features the 100 greatest innovations/discoveries of the year. Don’t have time to confirm the source right now, but it is breathtaking, scary, and wonderful all at the same time.

They should apply their time on using this new technique for electronics that help the disabled, not a phone. People do not need another excuse to get lazier.

Reading brains? Perfect mean of manipulation. We already have psychological/sociological research and Facebook to show what are the particularities of communities as wholes. You also said we were created. Did some other supercomputer create us? If not, how on earth did we get here? The Big Bang? Think about it. Has a tornado ever gone through a junk yard and create a Boeing aircraft? How much more impossible is it for a speck of dust (that nobody knows where it came from) to explode and create everything in the perfect order that we see today? The Laws of Thermodynamics I believe state that everything is degenerating from working condition into non-working condition (in essence from order to chaos), and there is nothing in creation that goes against that (from chaos to order), therefore, if our universe works from order to chaos, how on earth could it have been created in the reverse, chaos to order? It doesn’t make sense to me.

On paper the idea seems great but there are a few flaws in the idea. For example some one is thinking of someone (like there spouse) when they are trying to call someone ells (like there boss) that would seem like that would be a problem and also there is the worry that the government is using it to keep track on what the population is thinking lets say someone is thinking about hurting someone but has no intention of acting upon the thought (like in one of the new episodes of fringe where in one universe the guy is a cereal killer and the other he helps people fight the urges to become a cereal killer he tells them he has thought about doing bad things but has never acted on it) who’s to say the government has no intention on accusing that person for a crime that they have never done it would be good though for the people who are prone to getting in trouble with the law but other than that it has no real purpose fore the world I believe that the public should put their smarts to the development of greener energy and cars instead of mind reading programs. If we got to that level of technology I would be nervous about what I thought, and whether I was being evesdropped on. People would end up having guarded thoughts, then maybe we would fall back in brain development.

I believe this is good on some points, but bad on others. Humans are speeding ahead in the world of technology, and it will get out of hand. This will come back to bite us in the butt… Privacy is not a problem, since you could just simply choose to /not/ use this technology.

Contrary to lazy peoples’ ideas, this will make a whole new level of lazy. Typing and writing is the most important–and basic–piece of communication. ONLY, this is great for the disabled! Communication with the poor souls who can’t properly communicate now will be easier, and they can finally have a voice.

This is great but I feel sorry for many people with dirty minds when it comes to the computer being able to read the person’s mind. This will definetly be the greatest time for the police officers …unless we convert to robot officers next …

DF and shawn shifter: i’m not sure what communism has to do with mind control? unless you’ve just read 1984 and now mistakenly think those two things are related… if anything, the ‘Orwellian’ society everybody has a fear of is probably more close at hand due to big business, not big government.

In any case, if this technology is close to being developed i hardly think many people would be willing to have their thoughts read by a chip solely to make dialing a phone more convenient… if anything shouldn’t this technology be used for people who are mute etc? further, as was mentioned by many others, what if someone thought of a number they didn’t want to call, and the phone started dialing? simply thinking of something cannot reveal intent. i think it’s all a bit silly.

It is really great that scientists are making so many advancements but they should keep them in the lab. This device if invented should only be used for the handicapped, like those who cannot speak they can invent a computer the size of a cell phone so they can communicate with others. As for giving this device to the general population I think it would be another way to eventually invade our privacy. They already have camera’s everywhere in the big cities where they can track your every move if necessary and to be able to have our thoughts transmitted on to devices would not just stop with making it convenient for us to make a phone call and you know it.

I agree with sg. Typing is a waste of time (sometimes) but what if you were thinking about someone you love at the same time thinking about someone you hate. Would you dial the person you hate on the phone? And what if you accidentally call your brother if he’s the one you hate?

As for some people who enjoy going on … those sites, if you had a phone that would just type out the URL that you’re thinking… Let’s just say a lot of relationships would be broken and misunderstandings would spring.

Moreover, I like the hotword because I see it is very educational, so I want to post it also to my Facebook–again a newcomer too there–, as I did before, this does not show up at all it appears now.
So what’s going on!

I’ve always been infatuated with the concept of virtual reality, and if this technology of “mind-reading” is developed, videogames could be made where you’re not only playing the game, you’re in the game. I’m interested in the Star Wars videogames (especially Force Unleashed), and if that game was made with this new technology, instead of controlling the jedi, you would be the jedi.
I could express my feelings about this idea in two ways: vernacular “cool man, totally awesome”, and my preferred way “facinating”.

I think it’s only problematic if the thoughts start going the other way, i.e., if thoughts are sent to our heads from our phones, or a computer chip. That concern noted, technology like that might be useful as well – perhaps a bit like the points in the Matrix film when Neo exclaims, “I know Kung Fu!” or when Trinity expresses the need to learn how to fly a helocopter…. Instant knowledge might be a big plus.

Denise, It would be lovely if this device could be used to help the handicapped. Unfortunately research isn’t cheap. Someone has to pay the costs. The government could pay the costs, but they don’t really have that kind of money spare. A charity could be formed to allow public donations to pay for the costs, but raising that amount of money could take years. So we are left with a company. They pay the costs, and in exchange we let them sell the product for money. Whether or not they make a profit doesn’t matter, in a few years their copyright will expire and the technology will be free for anyone to adapt.

Ritz, firstly, this is a corporate technology, not public, the government will have no more access to the information than I will. Secondly if the corporation is reading your mind they are required to inform you. If they don’t they are breaking the law and can be sued. Thirdly it is not illegal to consider committing a crime, it could be used in support of a trial, but not as the only proof.

Rakhil, it might be useful if you mentioned that you were referring to Hindu texts, most of us do not know what Upanishad and Vedas are.

-Hey DF- you would be well advised to learn some more. It’s not 99% asking for this- it’s big business. Imagine the financial opportunities… The new resources to exploit… The people to exploit. All in the name of money. This is what the 99% are against. Also, the 99% movement has nothing to do with communism. They’re primarily Americans- REAL Americans- taking to the street to protest the fact that they feel oppressed. Remember, when the Tea Party did, it was because of their big money and corporate sponsors tricking them into thinking the government was the problem because the government is supposed to be their to serve the people and the corporations want to be served by the people. -Agreed. The problem, John, is that we are so primitive and undeveloped that we still seek personal wealth and fortune above altrustic endeavor and common good. This being the case, technologies and abilities will always first be utilized to make someone rich.

One day, maybe we will survive this infancy and evolve into a society without such need for things all the time, and we might finally know profound peace and understanding, rendering worldy aspect moot.

Did a supercomputer create us? Yes! his name(s) is God, or Allah, or Jahweh, Dieu, Gott….etc. The Big Bang didn’t start with a piece of dust. If you haven’t been unconcious the last ten years, you should know that apparently “solid” matter is actually mostly space. There is space between molecules, space between atoms, space between electrons and protons, space between pions and muons and bosons. There is space between the vibrations of quantum fluctuations. Now imagine a giant force, call it gravity or call it God,which can compress all the space out, the way you can wring out a washcloth. Now you have an incredibly tiny piece of super-hard, super-heavy “stuff that ain’t dust” which contains ALL the matter and energy in the universe. If you want to know where it came from, God was holding it. Then he let it go and directed its expansion, and, thirteen billion years later, here we are.

Either your understanding or your claim about thermodynamics is deficient. True, it posits the eventual rundown of everything in existence, BUT, it does not state that the rate of decay will be even and smooth. By your logic, all water would run downhill and form a flat, smooth ocean. Our sun has several billion more years of life, but it is dying. The Earth will eventually stop rotating. In the meantime the heat from the dying Sun and Earth act on the water through wind, ocean currents, river inflows, toroidal flows and coriolis effect. Instead of flat water we get oxygenated water which supports sealife and waves hundreds of feet high. The slowly moving continents collide and push up mountains 7 miles high, the runoff water from which flows back to fluff up your ocean again.

You think that the universe has perfect order? You are naive or egotistical, or both. You (and the rest of us) are not the best God can do. Your “perfection” is blissful, wishful thinking. The universe contains novas, which, by the way are creating new stars, you know, that chaos to order thing. It has black holes, dark matter and dark energy, quantum mechanics and stuff we probably haven’t learned about. God may have a purpose for it all, even if he hasn’t told you what it is because you wouldn’t understand ,but, except in His eyes, it’s far from perfect.

Interesting. “Narrow minded fool…naive…egotistical”. Pretty harsh words from someone who doesn’t want to come across as “judgmental or harsh”. But it doesn’t bother me, actually, I find it quite cool to be derisioned like that for my faith which I didn’t even mention. It means you could tell that there was something different about me, and boy that’s great!!

Anyway, to discuss the previous topics, obviously the god you serve and the God I serve are at the complete opposite ends of the spectrum. You define your god as a supercomputer. The thing about computers is they have NO feelings and can in no way have a relationship with anything. The God I serve is immanent, He is personal, He has feelings, and He desires a relationship with whoever will repent and surrender his/her life to Him. Therefore, my God is NOT a “supercomputer” and never could be defined as one, because it is opposite of His entire character. For example, He is defined AS love, which can be a feeling and it is also an action. Computers cannot “love” either through feeling or action. Just to get that settled.

And as for me using science to justify my “religious dogma”, I mentioned nothing about religion. I am NOT religious, religion is hooey. Many so-called Christians have a religion with Christ instead of a relationship with Him. I strive to do different, because a religion will get you nowhere.

Yes, I do realize that most of everything is just “space” and the reason we don’t fall on the floor when we sit on our couch is because there’s enough resistance between me and my couch to keep me from falling through the couch. However, space is not all-powerful, so it had to have a beginning right? Well, who invented space? You would say God, but God did not just hold it there and then let it go like a hot-potato. My God spoke space into existence, and it just was (He’s really cool like that you know) . And He also created the earth and all that is in it in six days, not thirteen billion years. If you look at the salt content of the ocean, it is getting saltier and saltier every year. If you trace it back thirteen billion years, I doubt you’d find any salt in the ocean. Also the sun is getting hotter and hotter each year. If you calculate how much it gets hotter per year and then calculate how hot it would have been thirteen billion years ago, there wouldn’t be any possible way for life to have formed because the earth would be a frozen ball of ice.

I don’t understand how my knowledge of thermodynamis is deficient or how the state of decay being even or smooth has to do with the law itself. I never stated that things would decay smoothly.

I know that the universe is not perfect. AND I know the reason. Sin corrupted everything. When Adam and Eve did exactly what God told them NOT to, hence being blatant rebels in the face of God, God had to punish them, because He is holy and just and cannot just let things like that go without punishment. When He punished Adam and Eve, the earth got cursed too, therefore all of creation was cursed as a result of Adam and Eve’s sin, so therefore the universe is NOT perfect, and i agree with you on that point. The only reason it is still here is because God is holding it together.

I don’t understand God. I will never fully comprehend God. However, I can come to know Him through Christ in His Word (the Bible). Did you know that eternal life IS literally knowing God?? See John 17:3. And the awesome thing about Heaven is that I’ll be able to know God WITHOUT having to deal with my sin nature!

You pose many supportive facts, yet you also stand in a hypocritical state of being, as you say God held the “Stuff that wasn’t dust”, then released it to form us in…13 billion years? Excuse me, and correct me if I am wrong, but the Bible says that God a) SPOKE reality, the heavens and the earth, and all upon it, into existence, including humans, in 6 days, with a day of rest. And b) if you are one of those who say the “days” weren’t 24 hour day, your correct. The original writing of the Bible, Hebrew, uses the word Yom in this time, saying the “day” of Hebrews, sun up to sundown. And as for us being inperfect, of course we are! We fell from God’s gracious gift of perfection in Genesis, amidst the Garden of Eden. If we were perfect, what would have then been the purpose of Jesus’s death, in which he was supposed to offer us grace, a way to be forgiven. Not perfect, as perfection needs not a God of grace, but the gift of forgiveness, giving us a need for a God like we have.

Wish we had more conclusive data.

I haven’t chuckled so well on a post on this blog for some time, since reading Jammin4Jesus response to Archon.

It’s the kind of response that is so lame on so many levels you just can’t even begin to touch it, even with a pole 13 billion light years long.

And as far as CrossBlood’s response to Archon, I’d say that his thinking is so constrained to fit inside his chosen mythology that he’ll never get it either.

I know you said you wouldn’t touch it with a 13 billion light year long pole, however, I would love to see your rebuke of my comments.

I think it is appropriate to point out what is “so lame” in one’s response and then explain why it is lame. Otherwise, it may insinuate that you lack the ability to refute one’s “lame” response in a mature and knowledgeable manner.

i was thinking about the same matter its conffusing and simple at the same time. the fact that our brain can transfer and create these thoughts so ‘cool’ its not something people really think about but when you do it will confuse you XD ive been thinking pictures= words colours = words thoughts com in words

Wow! I am super encouraged. I am guardian to my 7 year old nephew who has autism. I wonder, if this would be a new kind of assistive technology for those in the autism world that can’t communicate. My nephew also has a seizure disorder, commonly associated with autism. I pray that this makes the advances that it needs to help people.

This is an interesting idea to consider. What if you are thinking multiple things at once? How would the phone produce sound?
