The Los Angeles Lakers‘ Ron Artest has spent the majority of his basketball career stirring up controversy with his own brand of joie de vivre. The eccentric, at times rowdy, small forward and shooting guard now graces this column for a linguistic reason. Artest plans on officially changing his name to Metta World Peace. If, as our recent post conjectures, our given names play a part in predetermining our destinies – what does the future hold for Mr. World Peace (and what does Metta World Peace mean?)
Metta is derived from the Pali language, an ancient tongue in which Buddhist scriptures were composed. The following attributes can be attributed to “metta:”loving-kindness, friendliness, goodwill, benevolence, fellowship, amity, concord, inoffensiveness and non-violence. In Buddhist teachings, the practice of metta focuses on kindness and love towards all beings.
“World” is derived from the Old English weorold meaning “human existence, the affairs of life.” The Germanic translation we-ald literally means, “age of man.” The Modern English translation refers to “the earth or globe, considered as a planet.”
“Peace” is derived from the mid-12th century Anglo-Norman pes meaning, “freedom from civil disorder,” and the Latin ‘pacem’ or ‘pax’ meaning, “treaty of peace, tranquility, absence of war.” The Modern English use of the word as a personal greeting began around the early 13th century as a translation of the biblical term ‘pax’ – as in “peace be with you.”
It could be construed that Mr. Metta World Peace is on a path to global and spiritual enlightenment. Before he travels too far he may want to take a little time to shoot some hoops with the 6’9” power forward from Erie Community College who goes by the name, “God’s Gift Achiuwa” – that’s a match we’d like to see.
We’d like to know – what does your name say about you? Let us know, below.
My first name means ‘little bird’ in Welsh. My first middle name means ‘black’ in Irish and the second means ‘God has replied’ in Hebrew. Oh, and I’m German.
He’s the World B. Free for the 21st Century.
Some people seriously need mental help.
Mega Whirled Peas!
I really like Ron Artest. He is a little chaotic sometimes, but its always fun to watch him play basketball or just have fun like how he is doing right now. I agree that he is eccentric and sometimes rowdy, but I also respect him.
*Ron Artest* is fun to watch!
My name means WISDOM in Hebrew. I am very wise and appropriately named. It does not mean Precious Stone derived from the name Jade.
Until he stops his aggressive actions on the court and learns to control his mental health issues, his name change bears little meaning.
@David E.: And some people don’t, as they are merely strange without being insane.
My name in the old Hebrew dialect means the deceiver.
My full name is Bridges United Stevenson Jr.
…Love the Buddhist values, but I hate when the principles are made into fads from overpaid “celebrities” who provide entertainment but do little else to add any real value to peoples’ lives. Once in a while they change their names to something that mocks the genuine efforts of do-gooders, in a discombobulated effort to appear substantial.
I maybe may possibly need mental help, I truncated my parentally chosen moniker via UK deed poll. Why, it’s a bloody giggle a minute in my world…*siiiiigh…..
@David E
Need mental help? Who does, Metta World Peace? Just because he wants to have a unique name that expresses himself? O.o
Anyway, my (real) name means power or strength….one of those two. I’m pretty sure it’s power.
i’ve no idea where my name derived from… but i’m contented to what my parents have given to me.
)
Well, as much as I…respect…his choice in names, I believe we’ve had a _few_ too many articles on naming.
Dot after Mr? Why?
My name means lamb or purity. I get kind of disappointed when I learn the meaning of my name. It’s a sheep. It keeps us warm and eats and does stuff and whatnot, not like a dolphin who actually has distinct qualities. But I am glad that my name is hard to rhyme with things. So no teasing. :p
My daughter’s name, Jessica, also means God’s gift. All people used to name children with the significance of the names in mind.
Of course, my name means constant or stable.
Man Artest is on the verge of insanity, he needs to put more focus on his jump shots not the worlds dilemmas. how will the Lakers react, what will the world say, and finally will his mother disown him and disavow the name.
Honestly, who want’s “World Peace” on the back of their basketball jersey? It feels unoriginal, not to mention like he’s a contestant for a beauty pageant. And metta sounds more like a form of yoga than a first name. Oh well, to each his own.
My name means Mary Smart Pig. I’m so lucky.
Audrey means “Noble Strength”, which was something I could never really grasp. It sounded more like a string of nice sounding, prestigious words without any really applicable semantics. But I think as I have grown, the word “noble” has begun to gain more meaning in my eyes.
@ jada: a wise man knows that he is a fool and only a fool would call himself wise……..
My name – Lucinda – means bearer of light… same as Lucifer eh? lol that’s why they called matches Lucifers way back when. I do not feel particularly enlightened by this name as I go by Cindy and don’t really consider myself a Lucinda. I don’t know what I would call myself if I could name myself… ? oh and it is because of this that I made up my online moniker lunanoir – dark moon. It’s ironic or something.
My first name (Paul) means little or small. My last name (Plato, yes the philosopher, don’t get me started on that!) means “broad-shouldered” so I used to joke that my name meant “short and squat”.
I really don’t like my name. I wanted to be named Dennis. But my surname means Good Road in Spanish.
I think that Ron Artest is awsome and he has the right to change his name if he wants to hes a grown man he can make the decision if he wants he’s an adult he doesn’t in less he wants to listen to his mother.
My name: Hebrew for God’s Promise. Always liked my name.
‘Metta’ is actually very common name for Burmese people (Majority of Burmese are Buddhists). And we use alot of Pali words in our everyday Burmese language so it’s not unusual to name someone ‘Metta’ (or anyother Pali words, such as ‘Thitsar’). But followed by ‘World Peace’? Now, that’s original.
@yayRay Shel: Lambs (and sheep) do have distinctive qualities. Many, in fact. There are reasons why they are used so often metaphorically in Hebrew and Christian scriptures. Time for you to do a little research – you may discover that your name is actually something to be proud of. Christ himself is referred to as “The Lamb of God.”
I don’t feel my name shapes the way I think and behave too much, because the meaning of my name varies in definition depending on the source, but phonetically, it’s unpleasant to pronounce, in my opinion.
My birth name was Charles Sheen and my friends called me Charlie. But I have changed my name. Changing your name does NOT indicate mental problems. For me it was probably the best thing I ever did.
@connie – so every single person used to name their kids because of the meaning of the name? and by “used to”, exactly how long ago are we talking? or maybe you just think you’re superior in some way? people pick names they like now, and they more than liely did just the same thing in the vague past you’re referring to. tradition plays a big role, too, and peple have been and will continue to be named after family members and the like. these kids today, they just pick any old name! they’re so much stupider than you, right?
Changing your name does not automatically change your personality. A “gently owned vehicle” is still a used car….
My name is biblical and means either “God’s honour” (or honoring God) or “God precious”, e.g. precious to God.
My first name, “Greg” means “doer.” My last name “Coker” has to do with cocaine. You can probably figure out the rest!
my name means beloved + prince
My Name Is Senyo Toponwey & MY NAME IS WEST AFRICAN!!!! SENYO MEANS “THE CREATOR IS GREAT” & TOPONWEY MEANS “THE EYES OF THE WORLD ARE UPON YOU”
Thou art thyself though, not an Artest.
What’s Artest? It is nor hand, nor foot,
Nor arm, nor face, nor any other part
Belonging to a man. O! be some other name:
What’s in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet;
So Ron would, were he not Ron call’d,
Retain that dear perfection which he owes
Without that title. Ron, doff thy name…
Good day! The meaning of my given first name, Thomas, is the Greek form of the Aramaic name Ta’oma’ which meant “twin” (from behindthename.com). Interestingly, I have an identical twin brother, Timothy, which is from the Greek Timotheos meaning “honoring God” (also from behindthename.com). Thank you for allowing me to be a part of the conversation!! Take risks, be well, thrive and enjoy your day!!! :O)
My name is a female version of Jan, John, Ian…. as a girl’s name, a form of Janet & Janice. I feel lucky that my parents, picked a MUCH less common variation.
There are LOTS of names in lots of cultures that look and or sound similar and have similar meaning. The name seems to trace back to Hebrew. The meaning: “God is gracious”. I have also heard “gift from God”, which is pretty similar. Through a friend of a friend, born and raised in Morocco, I learned my name means eden or paradise in Arabic. Seems like a close correlation there.
Coincidentally, I have had a long-term relationship (5-4 yrs) with a Jon, and an Ian (6 yrs).
Perhaps ironically, I am Athiest on a non-theist.
Here, here, smoothius. That’s exactly what crossed my mind, too!
My first name means BLUE in Kannada (One of India’s many languages).
I still love Ron Artest!
@ Jfroml
The spelling should be, “Hear, hear, smoothius.”, as in, if you speak, I will listen, and hear, hear.
@ Eva
Dot after Mr. indicates that it is an abbreviation and some letters are missing. The term is a short form of the word mister. The letters i,s,t and e are not shown, and the (dot)PERIOD, informs us of that fact.
@ Greg
Don’t let people with narrow social and historical linguistic skills get you down about your last name. It has only been a few years since the thought of cocaine use has been applied. Your name has a long and proud history. Originally, in England, when the name came into existence, it was applied to artisans who heated charcoal in airless containers, to drive off impurities and produce a substance called coke, which burned at a much higher temperature, for use in blacksmithing and ore smelting. More recently, in the US, it was applied to miners in West Virginia and Pennsylvania who dug out coal, some of which was treated like the charcoal had been.
According to Wikipedia, my name is said to be of French origin, but my root names, Dionysius and Dionysia, are in Greek and Latin. But it also says that my name’s origin is also from Roman mythology. Hmm. Seems like different websites give me different definition and origins for my name, one says my name means ‘Goddess of Wine’, while another says its ‘Follower of Bacchus’, and wiki says its ‘to be devoted to God’. :/
First name is from India and means “Lover”
Middle name is French and means “Thief”
Last name is English and means “son of John”
My name means a prison in Birmingham
“The following attributes can be attributed”? And there is an issue of typesetting following that…
My name means “Lick the resins from my lips” in Swahili.
I’m going to change my name to Doofus. It seems more in harmony with my life and it eliminates confusion when my name is called for a table at a restaurant.
My first name means “one of wisdom,” my middle name means “mother of God” and my last name means “leader of the people.” I’ve never considered myself to be a leader of any people but my given names are fitting since I’m studying Philosophy (the love of wisdom) and Religion. Perhaps my last name has to do with my third subject of study: Psychology.
I liked Ron bettter.
I think he should have called himself McLovin
My name is Paras Mal Jain. first name ‘Paras’ means a stone if touched to iron, turns into gold (midas). Last name ‘Jain’ is derived from ‘jin’ from sanskrit language means a person who has conquered his mind and eradicated all his defiles and became pure and delightened. The community or group who follow the principles of Jin are called Jain.
My name says I’m a rock.
I’m encouraged that my name, Michael, is very common and its meaning in Hebrew is meant to be a rhetorical question: “Who is like God?”
My name means the following:
First: Scottish for “counsel, ruler”
Middle: Old Norse for “ever ruler”
Last: Old English for “meadow”
I put a lot of thought into naming my youngest daughter. She was born 2 weeks before Christmas. My people are Spanish her dad’s are Jewish immigrated from Germany. Her first name Janai means “God has replied” in Hebrew. Her middle name, Belen is Spanish for “Bethlehem”. I hope this predetermines all good things for this kid.
My first name means green stone, my middle name means a type of hawaiian plant and my last name is pronouced A key but it’s a type of friut XP
He is a nut.
My name doesn’t say much worth remembering.
metta world peace thats stupid
Is that why he slugged JJ Barea?
I think this is stupid. I don’t see the purpose of changing your name. You don’t need to change your name to begin world peace, or be benevolent, or kind. Those are actions. If you want to be known as a humanitarian, take action, not a deceptive name change that make you seem like your doing something. If you are doing something, make it be known, make the world see that you are doing your best to make a better planet and living your life in prosperity. To me, you will forever be known as the best Defensive player in the league in “Ron Artest”. Now that your name is peace, nobody can’t even say peace around you no more as a way to say bye, your going to think they are referring to you.
Chad = Warrior
Alexander = Protector of Mankind
Akpabio = ???
Wilson = Son of a resolute defender
Outstandingly enough my Myers-Briggs test results, numerology report, and personal history + personal future corroborate. Truly awesome!
…all coated with a magenta “metta” goodness we’ve all come to metta enjoy.
-CAAW
My name means heaven, but the way its pronounced in English means something bad… I’m not quite sure what exactly but a few people have mentioned it and they said it means hellish/ evil or something. My parents want me to change my name but I’ll definitely keep it… I personally feel that a name given on birth has a lot of meaning and shouldn’t be changed in a hurry. Plus I’ve grown into mine, it’s a part of me.
I Am The Poodle.
@ Carlitos
I never really comment on these dictionary.com articles, but I can’t help but agree with this post. The nature of his (and along with overpaid celebrities) lifestyle is just insulting to the people with real hearts in this world and the fact that he wants to be attributed with “good” things that in reality he doesn’t fulfill is insulting. The fact that there is even an article about this overpaid SOB on the front page of a well-known website disgusts me. Heck, i wouldn’t, and i’m pretty sure the majority of you people, want a person that was arrested to run a campaign for World Peace.
My name is spelled J on my birth certificate, not the Jay you see here. It’s just easier to go with the traditional Jay than trying to explain what the heck my father was thinking when he chose my name…
WOW what some people do just to get attention!! Always a pleasure to read all the cool articles and most of all the put downs of fellow bloggers LOL!! Am I only one that gets a kick out of all the arrogant and condesending comments people leave to point out misspelling and improper grammar!!
I grew up with a plaque on the wall, bought by my mother, that said that my name (Karly) meant “One of noble spirit.”
I have tried to find that same meaning/interpretation of it in adulthood and haven’t really been successful. But, people who know me, say that that actually fits me. (And, she was naming me after Carly Simon, but wanted to spell it differently.)
if ron artest likes to change his name, let him do it
its his life, let him live it whatever he likes
respect others..if u cant love them
“Emily” means “industrious” my middle name, “Ann,” means “grace” or “favored by God,” and my last name is either a corruption of the word “pocket” or the diminutive form of the Old English word for “demon.”
Does anyone else find it odd how the picture in this articles shows two basketballs and a ‘darker’ one in the middle? Hmm…subliminal message, anyone?
my first name is Nour , which means Light (although most people say i am depressed). my dad’s name is Muhammed, which means Chosen. [...] In 2004, the NBA player known at the time as Ron Artest went well beyond the nearly $10 million in forfeited paychecks and 146 games lost in suspensions after a major public and televised public relations nightmare infamously dubbed The Malice at the Palace. Fast forward to just before this season, Ron Artest changed his name to Metta World Peace. What does Metta World Peace mean? [...]
My 1st name Means “God like” in Anglo Saxon, middle name Kalon means “to go far”.
My first name has two parts. Kyiah Shekanna – it means, according to my guardian angel who sang me my name through the breeze in a meditation upon a mountain, it means “earth angel who embraces others through Namaste and Kindness”. I legally changed my name to Kyiah Shekanna. A big name to fullfill. My hats off to Metta World Peace. If you are interested in creating metta and changing our world, and celebrating world day of metta, take this pledge and pass it on to all of your friends! http://www.causes.com/causes/811982-world-day-of-metta/actions/1727289?recruiter_id=106621948&utm_campaign=invite&utm_medium=wall&utm_source=fb
