Up until the 17th century, the word “apple” meant all fruit other than berries but including nuts.
In Latin, the words for “apple” and “evil” are similar. Mālum is the word for “apple;” mălum is the word for “an evil or a misfortune.”
As a result of the apple’s association with Adam and Eve’s story, it has become a loaded symbol that represents, among other things, temptation, sin, immortality, seduction, the forbidden, and knowledge.
It could be pineapple or woodapple, unfortunately apple took the blame…
Perhaps Adam and Eve bit into the snake.
Rome Township, Ohio. It was found there in the 1880’s.
My belief is the apple is only a symbol that represents Eve’s virginity, and loss of her innocence and went back and seduced Adam .. the type of fruit is really insignificant.
I knew that. Im just glad someone confirmed it. Its right. the Bible doesnt say EXACTLY which fruit it is and for all we know that fruit may not even EXIST anymore!!
The tree itself was not significant rather there were many trees in the garden and it was a test of obedience that God said you can have “Anything” you want but dont touch this tree, no hardship was placed on them also many have said it was sex the bible shows this to be quite incorrect as God goes on to tell them to be fruitful and multiply.
So the fruit of the tree, whatever it was, is insignificant it was a test of obedience on perfect people, Eve was led astray and her husband ate in full knowledge, as he had been told 1st hand. God said they would start to die in that very day and we as his imperfect offspring also suffered the same fate, this has happened proving satan a liar as he told Eve she positively would not die and hence the follow up by him that we float off into some spirit world in an effort to perpetuate his lie., not supported by God’s word. this is why God sent his son Jesus to put the matter right so that man could in God’s due time could live forever on the earth in peace and happiness…
In that case then it must not make sense, how then can one pluck sin or immorality from a tree? It just doesnt make sense….
It wasn’t a fruit it represented eve
read divine principle
Please let me know what fruit that was when you find out
I thinks in positive that Adam and Eve bite the fruits from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil are the sacred fruits. Becasue the fruits are sacred by God. The fact the Tree in the Garden of Eden is a sacred fruit tree. The snake in the tree of knowledge was the unholy villain, the devil who used the snake to make Adam and Eve pick the holy fruit from an sacred and holy Tree of Knowledge itself. For breaking God warning about not to pick the sacred fruit from teh holy Tree of KNowledge itself will be punish by an consequence from God who is picking the fruit from the holy Tree of Knowledge. Will banished away from the Garden of Eden from broken the sacred rule of God.
My opinion is that the fruit from the tree in the garden is not a fruit that we see today. It doesn’t make sense for God to leave around the fruit that brought us into sin. I think the fruit doesn’t exist in our world today.
I wonder if dictionary is a unificationist…
Regardless, I believe that the fruit is a symbol for Eve’s sexual purity. When she was coerced into biting the fruit by Lucifer… yeah. Then she went to Adam to try and correct things, for they were supposed to stay pure for one another, then coerced him into the act.
The biggest sin is the abuse of sex, so the one “fruit” being banned in the Garden of Eden makes sense.
In Genesis 1:31, the Bible says that God looked at EVERYTHING He had made (including the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil) and said that it was good, and yet He commanded Adam not to partake of it’s fruit. The lesson: The tree was good, but it was not good for man because only God can handle the Knowledge of Good and Evil.
Reading this article made me think of the slogan: “apple of my eye” Where and how did this hackneyed expression originate?
According to some Jewish scholars on the Old Testament, the fruit could have been an apple or a citron (known as esrog or etrog in Hebrew). It isn’t specified and there are proofs and reasons for both. Citrons are not generally eaten as fruit these days but can definitely be found, especially in the fall in Jewish communities as we use them on the holiday of Succos.
well, there were a lot of versions on how they interpreted that story. I first believed on ‘the apple is only a symbol that represents Eve’s virginity, and loss of her innocence and went back and seduced Adam’– that was what my professor taught us who majored in religion. Then I read this, ‘many have said it was sex that the bible shows this to be quite incorrect as God goes on to tell them to be fruitful and multiply.’ — the guy made sense too. Versions: very confusing.
phil cose is absolutely right
It is “the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil.” See, before that ate the fruit, they were running bare, naked and free in Eden, at perfect peace and taken care of by their Creator.
After they ate the fruit, they had knowledge of good and evil. Before their was no such knowledge in their mind, hence, peace, tranquility, nirvana. After, they see they are naked… JUDGE being naked as bad/evil, they go and cover themselves and hide from their Creator because now they know shame.
We apply the lesson, “God kicked them out because they disobeyed him” but really, their own new knowledge, which led to polarity thinking, locked them out of Paradise.
It is a parable for all times. As soon as you “know” something as good or evil, you are no longer in paradise.
It could be a bunny, y’know.
I agree with the author Daniel Quinn, that The forbidden fruit represents totalitarian agriculture. For example, when we farm we know that growing more food to feed starving millions is good, and we know that pests who destroy our crops are bad. This is an example of us thinking we know what is good and evil. 10,000 years ago is when this agriculture society started spreading into the hunting and gathering groups, and 2,000 years later, started pressing against the Semites, which later became the Jewish people. The Semites wrote this story from their perspective, which was, ‘this agriculturalist culture killing us, taking our land, getting bigger and bigger is bad’. Thats why the story has the viewpoint that the knowledge of good and evil is a bad thing. Its a symbolic story. “You may compete, but you may not wage war.”
it is not so clear in the history that you people say that what had they(Eve and Adam) eaten an apple in janna befor they are gotten out from janna. so whatever it is but it was an economical activity that satisfied their want. so it will not be wrong saying that economics came into being in that event.
Getting kicked out of the garden is the result of over farming. Killing off the surrounding areas to create more food. In Genisis 3:15 it talks about “putting the fear (of you) into her” and the man being her master, this is a sharing of the development of a patriarchal society.
When Gen 3:17 “I’ve placed a curse upon the soil. All your life you will struggle to extract a living from it, until your dying day.” This seems directly related to D. Quinns theory of totalitarian agriculture.
The tree of life is the rule of nature that keeps all species in check to prevent overpopulation. We wage war on pests so we can have more food for humans. We wage war on animals so we can have more space for humans. We wage war on forests so we can have more resources and space for humans. We should be competing for space and food, but not killing things that use what we need, just because we need more of it. That leads to overpopulation, and less species diversity, which is the problem we are in right now. The Semites saw this coming 8,000 years ago and passed this story down through the ages. This is part of the reason why I only buy organic foods (besides its health benefits,) to contribute to a change in the way we farm, which will hopefully change the way we, as a culture, think about our global community.
Had not Adam and Eve eaten the apple..we wouldn’t be here commenting on them. There wouldn’t have been any evolution. What would be life without the knowledge of good and evil? This process of creation and destruction will be going on and on…
The Bible NEVER says the snake is the Devil. I wish people would stop saying that. And the Bible is largely an allegorical script, so it’s a better chance the fruit WAS sex and not an actual fruit as SEX during the time of the writing of scripture was seen as unclean UNLESS it was for purposes of procreation. We have to take into account the ascetic environment where a great deal of the bible was created. And id one thinks the bible was written by God himself, well he probably won’t agree with what I have to say.
The book of Genesis names the fruit that Adam and Eve ate as the Fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, which was the only fruit disallowed. The only other special tree in the garden was the Tree of Life, of which they were allowed to eat but had not at the time. After discovering what Good and Evil were, they realized their sin in choosing to eat of the Fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil and hid themselves from the Creator as they knew they had done Evil. They even went so far as to hide their bodies in shame. The first lie we tell each other is when we put clothes on. We hide our visceral responses to and from each other. Ever tried to lie to someone when naked? It’s not easy. Even G-d said that all was good with his creation, even when Adam and Eve were naked and unclothed. Food for thought. Oh, and g-d evicted them so they wouldn’t eat of the Tree of Life and become like gods.
They both ate some fruit. Why should we care?
Phil Cose is 100% accurate and those comments are supported by Bible scriptures like (Gen 1:28 Be fruitful and become many and fill the earth)…
(Gen 2:17 But as for the tree of the knowledge of good and bad you must not eat from it, for in the day you eat from it you will positively die)
(Romans 5:12, 19 That is why, just as through one man (Adam) sin entered into the world and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men because they had all sinned… vs 19 For just as through the disobedience of the one man (Adam) many were constituted sinners, likewise also through the obedience of the one person (Jesus) many will be constituted righteous.)
(Isa 65:21, 22 And they will certainly build houses and have occupancy; and they will certainly plant vineyards and eat [their] fruitage. 22. They will not build and someone else have occupancy; they will not plant and someone else do the eating. For like the days of a tree will the days of my people be; and the work of their own hands my people will use to the full)
As far as mythology and for that matter, the story of Adam and Eve goes, the “apple” in all its beauty is used in a symbolic and figurative sense. Earlier Mesopotamian myths like the Epic of Gilgamesh, the precursor of the biblical myth suggests that the fruit could have been either dates or grapes since it describes it of having blue-reddish color. Anyway, I personally believe the fruit in the story is irrelevant. But I do know one thing for sure, provided apples are a good source of phytochemicals, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals and it is this—An apple a day keeps a doctor away. They have evolved for a reason.
To Charles McKinney: The phrase “the apple of my eye” is first mentioned in the Bible, Psalms 17:8, and is in reference to the cornea/pupil of the eye because the eye looks round, “like an apple.” The apple of your eye is precious, as sight is a precious thing, and therefore is meant to be something you protect and care for greatly.
phil cose was correct in the tree being a test: recall Pandora’s Box? A gift with one rule: Do NOT Open. Ever. Seriously though: it was just one rule and they disregarded it, losing themselves paradise. People: “No” means “No,” not “Maybe,” not “Yes.” -No.-
The fruit itself was never the issue – yes, it could have been the pomegranate, or some fruit that no longer exists on this earth – the issue was that by disobeying God they had sinned. To sin means to “miss the mark.” That is the original sin – that they were disobedient, not that Adam and Eve knew each other in the biblical sense. Let’s face it: Adam and Eve would have HAD to know each other quite well before they left the Garden so that the only sons they were mentioned to have (three: Cain, Abel and Seth) would be able to have wives, and so Cain would be afraid of someone killing him when he was forced to leave home. If Adam and Eve were the first people, if there had only been two at the very start… obviously that means that the other people had to have come from somewhere, and so Adam “knowing” Eve could absolutely NOT be the original sin.
The greatest sin was not anything to do with sex, though yes, there were later many types of sins remarked on having to do with sex. The greatest sin was not to put God first in everything. So, if God says, don’t do something, you aren’t supposed to do what God just told you not to do. It shows you put your own curiosity, lusts, etc., before him. One of the most likely reasons that there were so many sins concerning sex is because the people then were quick to pick up on the fact that, one, inbreeding is bad in terms of genetics and, two, since they were concerned with the propagation of the species, same sex couplings and beastiality would be considered to miss the mark because no progeny could ever be expected from the interactions.
As for the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, while being something good, was not something that He wanted Adam to partake of, because in knowing both Good AND Evil, Man would no longer be innocent, and only that which was innocent could remain in the Garden of Eden. As Shannan said, that’s the problem with polarity thinking – they learned to see in “black and white.” If anything, God made Eve too trusting of others, for she believed the snake so easily. Adam, the idiot, did not stop her – Genesis 3:6 states that he was with her when she ate it, so he was at just as much fault as she was, and frankly I think he used her as a guinea pig to see if she would drop dead and since she didn’t, well, why not eat the fruit she is now handing to him to eat, right? Of course, as they learned, they had been misinformed by the snake. Oops.
it was a tomato. adam did not know it was the forbidden fruit till he tasted nothing like he’s eaten before. that’s how he knew it was the forbidden fruit. he felt he failed his guardianship over me, for i failed to do as was commanded to him. he thought he lack something in him, like feathers or a pouch perhaps, that could have helped him in rearing me. he felt shame in his ineptitude, and covered himself and me. and when God called he hid and i followed suit. the fruit represented something metaphysical, that is not logical, as one would these day, but present. like the serpent that is not suppose to speak yet spoke with me. about things that something of it’s kind has never known. the snake is proof of things unseen, yet definitely present. just a bite it said, and i would know. but the one behind it, the original serpent, intended to kill Adam, and present himself as Adam’s substitute, to be a father. poor being. and so we all. i was right, there are beings unseen. my seed will crush him eventually. my seed, the quest for truth, knowledge, wisdom. those who conquered knows. let those who has ears listen. his seed, the use of deception and harm to further one’s interest, this will perish.
The Bible never says that the serpent was Satan. That was Milton, from Paradise Lost.
And how could Adam and Eve known that disobeying God was wrong? They could now know that, because they did not have knowledge of good and evil before eating of the fruit of the tree of good and evil. Indeed, God says that He is afraid that they will eat from the tree of life and “become as us.” He seems to have thrown them out of the garden because 1) he wanted to make sure they didn’t eat from the tree of life, and 2) because after they ate the fruit, they lied to him and refused to take responsibility for their actions.
michelle: “the fruit could have been an apple or a citron… there are proofs and reasons for both”
Let’s not get absurd – of course there are no “proofs”; the story if the Garden of Eden is a morality fable and as such is pure fiction, so all speculation is purely academic.
The idea that the fruit represents the “sin” of sex is ludicrous, as God told them to procreate – and the idea that Eve “seduced” Adam is not only contrary to all common sense (like a man has to be “seduced” into sex? Yeah, right!) but is consistent with the misogyny evinced by Christianity.
The fruit did not possess knowledge nor did the tree. It’s a tree for heaven’s sake, and a piece of fruit. It was the broken command that showed Eve and Adam what was in their own hearts. They lived in a perfect world until they disobeyed the command of their God. The tree was a test and Eve and Adam failed it.
Maybe the sin could be tiny stuff that got together and look like some sort of food……….
but poor apple………
Phil Cose is absolutely right. To add to his statement, the bible tells us what fruit they ate. In Hosea chapter 10 verses 13 it tells us…
13Ye have plowed wickedness, ye have reaped iniquity; ye have eaten the fruit of lies: because thou didst trust in thy way…
Satan deceives the whole world with lies… the same lies Eve believed and sold to her husband is the same lie many of us believe and sell to others… if we do not read God’s book well!
phil cose is right (except for the places where he is wrong).
At least some clarity on that… because yes, I know the Bible does not specify which fruit was… but Apple is not that seductive!!!!
H All, The reference is “the tree of the knowledge of good and evil”. To me that means thet when Man became sentient he was cast out of Paradise. In other words, when Man became Man, he didn’t live in the almost carefree world that lower creatures inhabit.
Curious said it all in one word – “confusing”. So much for not being a god of confusion. The bible is a book written by men and changed by men. We should pay so much attention to what our current day governments are doing and getting away with.
for those of you who don’t truly know your theology, The Bible claims to be the final word of God and should be taken as such. Therefore these cant be metaphors. To believe they are not would be to either discount God or Question if it is his word at all. It could also show that someone has scriptural ignorance. Not that it really matters.
There is no evidence to even suggest that any of these things happend. so I will dismiss the possibility that any of it happened without needing any evidence as well.
nobody knows what the fruit was. Don’t spoil the mystery!
Actually…..the fruit was a “tavernesti”, not known to exist today. The tavernesti is a tree bearing fruit which should qualify it as “the” possible fruit. It looks similar to an apple in size but, not shape or taste. Some believe the fruit can still be found in specific parts of the rain forrest in Costa Rica (hmmmmmm), but only when specific conditions exist. I’ve not found proof of this existence (photos, etc.) and, no one has offered what the “specific conditions” are. My original source for this information is a very old professor from my college days (a long time ago). She is not alive any longer. However, I’ve heard others talk about the tavernesti at various events through the years when someone starts talking about the “apple”. I hope this helps some!
Amanda, how can that be the case when God told them to be fruitful and fill the earth with offspring? You can’t have children without having sex.
I think there’s a chance that there wasn’t really a talking snake that convinced the naked people to put some underpants on forever. But if there was, it was definitely a quince.
I think the omnipotent question would be, was the apple ripe? If so they should eat, if not then not. Poop..!
Hello people, please be rational. The story of Adam and Eve is pure mythology. That story is no more true than stories of Osiris, Zeus, Odin, Krishna, or the Great Turtle.
I believe apples were not indigenous to the region where Eden was supposed to be.
I think Shannen makes sense. It is as soon as we know what evil and good are that we fedel shame and forever burdened with that decision making role. Adam and Eve were like children, free of responsibilities, but I don’t beleive that to be free of knowledge was ever good. God, if there is one, if he was clever enough to create us planned this. Or atleast knew suffering would be a part of life.
In Latin, the words for “apple” and “evil” are similar. So they were tempted and tasted evil (disobedience) and therefore paid the price.
A counter to some of the comment below. Seriously how could it be in anyway symbolic of Eve/Adam’s sexuality when they were told to go forth and multiply? Sex wasn’t forbidden fruit – disobedience was. God would have been more ticked-off if they didn’t procreate!
there was no adam and eve and no friggin apples you bunch of delusinal idiots. get real and get a life!
I agree, the “fruit” is a symbol of sexual (im)purity. Eve was seduced by Satan, and they had sex in the Garden. She then went to Adam and did the same. This makes sense, as after they symbolically “partook from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil”, they realized that they were naked, were embarrassed & ashamed, and then covered their private parts with leaves. Eve then produced heteropaternal superfecundation twins: Cain (worker of the land) and Abel (shepherd). They share the same mother, but have different fathers. Incoincidentally, the word “Cain” translates to “son of the evil one”. Cain committed the first murder by killing his brother over jealousy, as God favored Abel for obvious reasons.
It doesn’t mention anywhere in the bible that is was an apple.
Sometimes I wonder if religious people have their own language.
“I thinks in positive that Adam and Eve bite the fruits from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil are the sacred fruits. Becasue the fruits are sacred by God. The fact the Tree in the Garden of Eden is a sacred fruit tree.” – Charles H. Westgate III
What the heck does that mean?
If you want me to understand you then please use standard English, not some strange dialect that sounds like it came from a 3-year-old.
god is truly wise
imagine if god had said wat fruit it was?!
we would have blamed a fruit for wat adam and eve did! lol
Who cares? Which myth are you going after next, was Thor’s hammer made of iron or bronze?
its so simple.God wanted Adam and Eve to eat from the tree so that they can come to earth and make more of themselves. it wasn’t Eve’s fault that they both came out, nor was it Adam’s.God made Adam and Eve eat from the tree so that we can come to earth, multiply, and then go back to paradise if we’re good. besides,we can’t give birth in paradise, can we?
The fruit is surely just a metaphor – like with the stories Jesus told, part of a fable intended to teach morals. Adam and eve exiled for eating ‘forbidden fruit,’ is THE classic example of consciously doing something you know is wrong and/or harmful and is the base of our human condition. Someone says ‘you can’t/mustn’t/shouldn’t do that’ and it instantly becomes more appealing.
Humankind constantly strives to push the taboo, we are inherently curious as this bible tale displays. I always questioned God’s omnipotence from this story – if he made us and knew us then surely he would know we would test the limits by eating ‘forbidden fruit.’ If God knew all then he would certainly know his children were curious in nature as he made them that way! Re: The fruit in question – as several other posters have said: I don’t think knowing the actual fruit ingested is of any significance.
@ SSBBrawler: The biggest sin is the abuse of sex? Where exactly are you getting this information? I surely have never heard this. If I remember correctly, the only unforgivable (and, therefore, biggest) sin is blasphemy of the Holy Spirit.
Maybe the dirty bird bit into a cucumber.
I believe the Adam and Eve story is a metaphor for the discovery of agriculture. It doesn’t matter what the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge was. What matters was the knowledge of agriculture itself – a knowledge of life and death, which in ancient text meant the same thing as good and evil. Adam and Eve had sinned against nature by growing their own food instead of eating what nature provided.
Eden is a metaphor for hunter-gatherer societies, which were quite leisurely, and Adam and Eve’s being cursed to toil captures the conversion to agricultural empires. Agriculture fights against nature, introduces property in land, and leads to division of labor, including soldiers and police to protect crops from both natural and human marauders. Note that the next story is one of a farmer (Cain) murdering a shepherd (Abel).
Where does anyone get the idea the apple means virginity? Have you ever heard of a woman being de-appled?
It’s just a bunch of garbage. There was no tree, no apple, no nothing.
I THINK IT WAS THE TREE OF EVE AND HIMSELF ADAM . RECOGNIZING THE FEMALE AND EVE THE MALE , THATS WHY THEY HID THEMSELVES . THE4Y WERE THE FORBIDDEN FRUIT . THEY BECAME KNOWLEABLE WHICH BROUT ABOUT EVIL WHICH MADE THEM PARTICIPENTS OF THIS TODAY ,THE WORLD IS FULL OF THIS TODAY ,MONEY AND SEX SEX AND MONEY ,I COULD GO ON AND ON BUT I WILL NOT. IF SO THIS TURN INTO A SERMON. THANK RED 37
“The apple of my eye” is the pupil of your eye. It uses the old meaning of apple, as a nut — imagine an apricot or other pitted fruit cut in half, and you see the colored fruit surrounding the dark pit, like the colored iris of your eye surrounds the pupil.
Interestingly, “pupil” also has a fun meaning. Like a school boy, “pupil” in Latin meant something akin to a small person, and in school this small person is looking up attentively at the teacher. And if you look very closely at the eyes of someone watching you, you see exactly this: in each eye, in the black center, you see a small vision of yourself, looking attentively at you. You see, therefore, a pupil in each eye.
Those old English poets knew what they were talking about.
“As a result of the apple’s association with Adam and Eve’s story, it has become a loaded symbol that represents, among other things, temptation, sin, immortality, seduction, the forbidden, and knowledge.”
Wouldn’t that be “immorality”?
lets consider it an apple …
God didn’t make little green apples.
How ’bout them apples?
According to muslim faith ,it was wheat.
God forbade eating the Fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. In Eden, this sort of rule was the only way to test Adam’s willingness to trust and obey God. In this he failed. It is not good to be ignorant of morality; that is reserved for children who aren’t old enough to know better and the senile who don’t know what they’re doing anymore. Keil & Delitzsch commentary of the Old Testament suggests, quite logically, that if Adam and Eve had remained faithful, God would have taught them the difference between Good and Evil while keeping them pure. Instead, Adam discovered the knowledge of good and evil through the contrast between the purity and perfection of God’s creation and the corruption of having sinned.
When I took a folklore class my professor told us that it had been an apple because apples are the most common fruit throughout the world; they grow almost everywhere.
phil cose was very correct in his comment. The eating of the fruit of the tree was an attack on God’s sovereignty. Jesus did prove that a perfect man can keep integrity to God despite any opposition thereby sanctifying God’s great name and vindicating his purpose for this planet.
One thing to keep in mind, just before God gave the command not to eat of the fruit of the tree, he said they could eat of all the trees with fruit BEARING SEED, certainly an apple and all fruit we know of today bear seed to reproduce. But there would of been no reason for that particular tree to reproduce once it served God’s purpose of man recognizing God’s right to rule. So the “forbidden fruit” is not in existence today, as the garden of Eden would of been totally removed by the global flood of Noah’s day.
It sounds like you were really there. What was the color of the “apple”?
Acording to the Bible; A tree means a particular Kingdom, while a fruit means the ways through which that Kingdom can prosper. The surpent means a clever creature. Death means cutting of the social relations. Thus Adam & Eve accepted to assist the prosperity of the Kingdom of being free from God.
The Bible makes it quite clear that they eat a fruit, not a snake. Before the great flood eating anials was prohibited… I think.
I think it was a fig…
In the new testament, Jesus cursed a fig tree…
and maybe He was never nailed to a cross but a tree
Phil Cose IS right. Beautifully stated in simple logical steps. You should be a writer!
The type of fruit in the the story of Adam and Eve really didn’t matter. As several people have mentioned, the issue was that God said “Don’t eat from that tree.” God could have said “Don’t jump off this rock or you will surely die,” and it would have been so because He said it.
It’s very possible that the same fruit was on both trees, as well as several other trees in the garden. Any fruit bearing tree tends to form a grouping of trees around itself, hence the phrase “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.” You will notice that the Bible doesn’t say “Don’t eat from the trees in the center of the garden,” or “Don’t eat from this type of tree.” But since the Bible is very specific “Don’t eat from this tree or you will surely die,” we can see that the type of fruit really is of no concern in this case.
The sin came because of their disobedience to God’s instruction. Sin means to be separated from God and in that separation their eyes opened to the ‘other side’. Prior to that they only had knowledge of the Spirit of God. Afterwards, because of their disobedience they became aware of the adversary and the evil spirit world and as a consequence they developed a sinful nature. (The same one Christians must fight against even today.)
I believe it wasn’t what was on the tree but rather the symbolism of what it represented which was unity with God and being one in the Spirit.
Please tell me, too! I’d love to know what fruit it was!
i knew that already from the Quran!! they finally found out..
Read Paradise Lost by John Milton. His imagery of the apple is the reason why the apple is seen as the forbidden fruit.
Lysie, did you read the article? It distinctly says that “apple” means all fruit other than berries but includes nuts. Honestly.
Follow-up to Charles McKinney:
Take a look at http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=pupil
I read the article. I see that “apple” refers to a variety of fruits. It would have been nice to know if they were referring to a specific fruit rather that interpreting of Latin phrasing.
Obviously, there are many lessons in the story of the Fall (and none of them have a thing to do with sex, at least not directly), but I believe that the most important one is what it teaches us about human nature. God said, “Help yourself to anything you want in the Garden except for the fruit of one tree,” and what do Adam and Eve do? They go hang out around the one forbidden tree. The nature of the tree and the nature of the fruit are totally irrelevant; what matters is the nature of human beings.
The story is about obedience to God and God alone. God gave Adam and Eve free will because he didn’t want them to be forced to worship Him. Eve chose to eat the fruit (after being tempted) and then she gave some to Adam (who was most likely close by or next to Eve when she was tempted) and he ate some willingly. In the end our humanity has caused a continuous downward fall.
Who learned that Adam existed or who heard that Eve offered Adam an apple?
what if they didnt ate that.. Hah running around naked XD
The fig tree is the only one mentioned by name in book 3 of Genesis.
It is a question that has been around a long time and I am still wondering. I love reading all of the comments. Interesting.
Some of these comments are SO right! The tree was obviously connected to whether Adam and Eve would be obedient or not – they weren’t. However, it’s always funny to me when people say that the original sin (which by the way, Satan actually was the first one to sin by LYING and saying that they would not die if they ate the fruit) was sex. As was pointed out, God wanted them to fill the earth with offspring, thus giving them the okay to have marital sex relations. Also keep in mind, ADAM AND EVE were the ones to feel ashamed about their nudity after they sinned. God never implied that their nudity was something to be ashamed of.
And in reply to Barabara C, no, the article was correct when it said immorTALITY. Even though the couple had no prospect of dying at that point, they were still DEPENDENT upon God for their life. But, Satan implied that the fruit would make them LIKE God. Eve probably somehow thought she would receive supernatural abilities after eating the fruit; the ability to be completely independent from God.
I bet it was a fig!
“And remember when your Lord said to the angels:”Verily I am going to place mankind generation after generation on earth” they said: “Will you place therein those who would make mischief therein and shed blood while we Glorify Your Praises and Sanctify You” He said: “I know that which you do not know”
“And He(Allah(God)) taught Adam the names of everything then He showed them (man) to the angels and said tell me the names of these if you are truthful”
“They said: “Glory be to You, we have no knowledge except what you have taught us, Verily it is You the All-Knower, All-Wise”
“He(Allah(God)) said: “O Adam inform them of their names.” and when he had informed them of their names He(Allah(God)) said: “did I not tell you that I know the unseen in the heavens and the earth and that I know what you conceal and what you reveal”
“Amd Remember when We(Allah(God)) said to the angels: “bow down before Adam.” And they prostrated all except Iblis (Satan) he refused and was proud and became one of the disbelievers” – satan pretended to be an angel though he was a jinn the first jinn just as adam is the first man and devils are decendents of satan just like mankind are decendents of Adam – so when the command was sent he satan was also included but because of his arrogance and pride hence Allah’s Knowledge when He said “I know what you reveal and what you conceal” was a testiment to what satan was hidden in his breast – hence the disbelievers in this world’s arrogence and pride in regards faith is a replica of satans disobedience – continuing –> “And We(Allah) said: “O Adam dwell you and your wife in paradise and eat both of you freely with pleasure and delight of the things therein as whereever you will but come not near this tree or you both will be one of the disbelievers”
“Then the satan made them slip therefrom the paradise and got them out from that in which they were. We said: “Get down all of you with emnity between yourselves, on earth will be a dwelling place for you and an enjoyment for a time.” – this earth has an appointed term, we are not going to be here forever…there are two parties in this world (believers and disbelievers) thats why Allah said “emnity” continuing –>
“Then Adam recieved from His Lord words and His Lord accepted His repentence. Truely He (Allah(God) is the one who accepts repentence, The Most Merciful”
“We said: “Get down all of you from this place, then whenever there comes to you guidance from Me whoever follows my guidance there shall be no fear on them nor shall they griever”
“But those who belie and reject Our Ayat (Signs, revelations, verses) they are the dwellers of the Hell Fire they will abide therein forever” – so there is a Day of Ressurection where The All-Mighty will resurrect everyone and everything creation on this earth and they will be lined up for their judgement and Allah(God) will bear witness to the truth – and the believers in His messangers, signs, revelations and followed His guidance will be admitted to paradise which is our true home – and those who were adverse to it because they thought there will be no reckoning or Resurrection will be cast to Hell for eternity thus the case will be judged – Jesus was one of the messangers of Allah (God) just like moses, abraham, the last prophet mohammed (pbuh) david, jacob, ect..they all were given revelations, signs and performed amazing things muslims believe in all the angels, all the books, all the prophets and make no distinction between any of them and yes even Jesus we muslim believe in him but as stated in the original Torah moses was given and original Gospel which jesus was given and the Qu’ran testify to him being a messange- Allah(God) does not have a son, theres nothing co-equal or comparible to Him, it is not befitting for the Majesty of The Most Gracious to have a son, who is his wife? a being from His own creation? how lowly do people think of The Most Great? come on – “Had We(Allah) intended a pastime(wife) We indeed would have taken it from Ourself” – a verse from the Qu’ran meaning if He wanted a wife He would have created her from a piece of Himself just like He created Adams wife. but not a wife from the offspring of Adam – thats a tremendous lie
Maybe they bit into each other’s apple
does it really matter which fruit or vegetable it was,it was forbidden anyhow, and….we will all find out when the books will be opened(DANIEL 12:4) The Lord lets us know and understand exactly how much we need to understand right now and how much we need know…the rest, will be revealed!
The Bible is highly allegorical and idiomatic. In this case, Eve seduced Adam into the abomination of mixing races (the “apple” or fruit of the tree of knowledge, here carnal knowledge). It’s clear that Cain’s father was the devil (the serpent) and there is conjecture that Adam fathered a mongrel with Lilith, whose offspring continue to plague us today.
99% of these comments are great stories that have been told in one form or another around campfires of camel dung for thousands of years. Man’s vanity will not let him accept the fact that he evolved from a lower form of life.
Man created a god. A god did not create man.
The apple or other fruit (as we know is now specified) is not a big deal… the issue was the knowledge of Good and evil, the trustworthyness of God’s leadership, and the responsibility of Adam to steward God’s word and communicate them to eve (as opposed to letting her be the science experiment)… Eve was created after the command was given… Adam failed in his leadership role.
I’m sticking with the “tavernesti” fruit. It’s the best story so far!
It is true, the Bible is a collection of stories, an archive of the Truth.
If Eve had no concept of right and wrong prior to tasting the fruit, then how could she have known that it was wrong to defy God’s will?
If your children disobeyed you, just once, would you kick them (and all of their future descendants) to the curb to experience harsh reality for themselves?
Old Testament God sure sounds more like an egomaniacal brat than an omniscient and benevolent creator. Then again, if he is the former, it makes the whole “made in his image” thing seem a lot more plausible. Anyway, where’s Raymond Kenneth Petry when you need him to delineate all this tight-wound biblical ambiguity?
It was the middle east. Hence, it was figs.
I am a muslim and I have A slight idea on what this is all about…
Adam And Eve were told strictly not to eat from a tree which Satan had cursed but Satan convinced them to eat the fruit and thats when God punished them by taking them out of paradise into Earth and thats why earth was born aswell. This is what Muslims believe and I can not garauntee it is true in other religions…. HOPE THIS HELPS!!
XD XD XD XD OFCOURSE ITS AN APPLE XD XD XD XD OH YEAAAAAH
Come on people, really? The “fruit” from the tree of knowledge is knowledge itself! To worship a god one must be blindly and obediently ignorant, but man is a curious creature by nature. (Funny how God didn’t know that and see this coming!) By tasting knowledge both Adam and Eve became aware of their own mortality, hence not “living” forever. I can’t believe some people still believe in myth, let alone literally interpret the Bible. I suggest Aesop’s Fables, anyway!
Thank you Father Satan for bringing knowledge to people in order to better themselves while respecting life/liberty and the pursuit of happiness so humanity won’t be auto-drones as Adam was when he named all the animals that God programmed him to.
BTW: If God really cared about Adam in order to NOT eat the fruit of knowledge God would’ve created a force-field in order to discourage Adam from trying:
Every time Adam or Eve would reach for the fruit they would get a nasty “shock” and eventually learn to not do that so they won’t get hurt since it’s painful.
Then when God takes away the force field they won’t even THINK of taking the fruit much like the elephant story where the elephant was always pulling on the restrains until the elephant fully detrmined escape was not an option so stopped pulling on the restrains.
Then the owner didn’t have the elephant tied up and the elephant had every opportunity to escape but didn’t figuring there was no point in it.
I have always thought that the fruit you all refer to was when we (Adams and Eves) as creatures of the earth (the garden), developed the ability to differentiate between right and wrong (ate from the tree of Knowledge.) Figuritively – once we realized something was wrong (temptation) – and “bit into that fruit” (original sin) or chose to commit that which we knew was wrong – then we passed a boundary that no other creatures of the earth had the ability to discern between – and knew shame (nakedness in the garden.) Just my thoughts – fire away.
The apple is also a symbol of health, which is exhibited in advertising today. Funny that the apple is just not that nutritious!
The Bible by the way is no Myth and is very literal, when it refers to the serpent it literally means a serpent aka snake, with that in mind please tell me “Yes” how Eve had sex with a snake and was then impregnanted……exactly. ignorance. complete ignorance.
I feel sorry for those that live in darkness. Seek the light. Hes calling for you.
Do a search: The First Scandal Adam and Eve.
if it had something to do with eve’s virginity, as many have stated, would it not then be a cherry?:)
and my goodness people, as joseph o so clearly pointed out, it was the knowledge of good and evil that adam and eve partaked in. the fruit is a metaphor, an illustration. we must remember that when these stories were written down, whether by divine inspiration or singular creativity, the audience was not well educated, and had little experience in critical thinking or abstract thinking. the stories of the old testament and even those of the new had to be told in such a way that the masses could understand. for could we truly know the mind of god within our pitiful frame of reference? these stories are not literal stories they are signposts and guiding illustrations to help our small minds understand the pathway to a greatness that we cannot imagine. the fruit we ate set us on that pathway, the desire and ability to comprehend all life’s mysteries. our greatest gift was that of free will and secondary to that curiousity. the fruit of knowledge is our pathway to understanding god, though we will never make it all the way there, for god is greater than our reality. but rather than live in blissful ignorance we chose to learn and know. we chose to be like god inasmuch as we could and we strive to understand the mysteries of his creation. consequently we also feel sadness and guilt and pain and fear. by-products of knowledge. but could we know love without knowledge of it? well worth the pain if you ask me.
wow… sorry y’all, got on a roll, but i hope you get my point:)
She was a woman with listening problems. Go figure, at least you could beat your woman back then.
To all that say that God should have known His children are curious, and therefore would eat of the tree: Of course He knew! It’s called free will, which He gave us in full awareness of what He was doing. He wanted us to choose to have a relationship with Him, not be forced into it. He knew that Eve and Adam would sin, and devised a plan so that they could still be with Him: He would send His Son to save the world.
The Bible is not a compilation of fiction and myths. It was written by over 40 different people at different times, and with about 25000 manuscripts. When it was translated, there were many people translating it together, making sure to stay as true to the orinigal text as possible. In fact, when the Dead Sea Scrolls (fragments of manuscripts of every book of the Old Testament, except Esther) were found in the 1940’s and 50’s, it was found that our versions of the Bible today are extremely consistent with their original manuscripts.

“…God goes on to tell them to be fruitful and multiply.”
Yeah, but he was referring to arts and crafts and such.
ITS JUST A STORY PEOPLE! Stop living your life through the pages of an ancient storybook and start behaving like real human beings. You don’t need a book to tell you it’s wrong to kill people etc, it’s common sense. There is no instruction book for life on earth because we evolved naturally, we are not the product of the only 2 people some magical “God” ever built, and we are the way we are because they ate a piece of fruit. It’s all figurative and if you don’t get this simple fact you would be better off spending each Sunday morning getting an education in basic science than going to church and giving them your money so they can perpetuate this bible rubbish.
nice one Robert Hagedorn
Amen to that michael! Wake up to yourself people, this is a dictionary site, not some religious forum.
It’s a scientific fact that every type of snake in existence today lacks a voicebox capable of creating human speech. Look it up, its true. Now given that has been established can someone explain who told eve to eat the fruit please? By the way, it was most likely a mushroom they ate.
well, all i know is that adam and eve took a bite on that fruit and whichever that fruit is, brought us to sin, hehehe, anyway i think i dont have to say anything because as i have read on all the comments here, everything is well said and clear….
This newly taught me an etymological fact, that apple meant almost any fruit until some time in the 1600s. It explains the peculiarity I noted months ago, that “pineapples” are externally pine-cone like but little like apples (the first is fibrous, but the last is not). It is strange that for decades, I knew that the Anglo-Saxon word was æppel (a prime example of the “short” English /æ/ sound, unchanged for a thousand years), yet I never checked its meaning! My fallibility is at work! (Please /learn/ a new thing or two from the preceding sentence—about yourselves.)
As usual, an excess fraction of the readers are /derailed/ from the proper subject, attracted to pet topics, often religious, regularly repeating by rote what their parents or other “authority” figures taught them in childhood was the imperative “right” meaning or lesson. Rarely indeed do readers think outside their wooden boxes of early life, bringing their unfettered, innovative intellects to bear upon the topic, yielding substantive, valid insight and extensions or corrections of information. (If you recognize and accept the problem, you begin the first step toward self-improvement. Can you please?)
I choose to travel via the spur track rather than derail myself.
I state the fact that the alluded B•rê’shîth´ 2 and 3, like much in the accounts in the Tôrâ´h, is a myth, the second Hebrew creation myth. (As most know, that’s Genesis 2-3 in the Pentateuch.) That said, I am not some scathing, foaming skeptic, and I find the myth extraördinarily profound amongst all mythology. The profundity is lost amongst both them who are spellbound and enthralled to the faulty text and them who are inclined to dismiss everything which makes them feel uncomfortable (at risk of falling into childish credulity). I fallibly believe that my insights into the lost, cryptic symbology of the lost, postulated, original text are above average but that a very, very few people’s understanding far surpasses mine. (Cf. the documentary hypothesis, http://En.WikiPedia.org/wiki/Documentary_hypothesis.)
I sketch a few of my conclusions here as information, /not/ as knowledge or teaching. I am fiercely anti-proselytic.
I traverse the limits of scholarship to assert that /anyone/ having certain, key, undisclosed insights can extrapolate some the original text’s bare outline. (Some reasons for abstention from disclosure should be obvious.) Such insights are particular to the genre of ancient text and flatly cannot be gained from general psychological or social insight or ordinary similarities with things in the modern world. (Nice tries, insightful commenters.)
In the inferable original text, not only was the “fruit” not an apple, it was not any form of flora, plant or product of /plant/ growth. (Note the emphasis, and apply your intellect.) The same may be said of the ye´req ‘ê´sev (verdant grass), ‘êş p•rî (fruit tree), and the whole b•ghan ‘Ê´dhen (“garden of Eden”). A blunt statement of the inferable, source symbolism would shock fundamentalist and scathing skeptic alike. The Hot Word’s exhibited image, appleden.jpg, at random shows a green apple. However, the symbolic “fruit” was inferably textually green, the color of chlorophyll (a Greek-derived word), and certainly not literally so.
The story of the “fall” into sin seems to lure almost everyone into temptation to render yet another stale interpretation of the present, faulty text, quod vide supra. Can anyone recognize that if one treats the text seriously but skeptically, then none of the textual divine commands here (of Êl, Ĕlohîm´, or Yah´weh) could have been verbal, and intrinsically none was subject to disobedience? Please, just postulate that.
What would be the logical consequences if that were also true of the commandment in Genesis 2:16-17? (Note that the man was given the limiting commandment. Did either hominids or nascent homo sapiens have the advanced language capacity to communicate such a commandment, if verbal and evadable?) Thence ponder with your keenest faculty of intellect, again, treating the text both seriously and skeptically, is “had-dá‘ath tôv wâ-râ’” (the ‘knowledge/understanding/wisdom/insight/mind of good and bad) subject to learning—in any organism having just any brain? Seriously ponder: Could any sub-sapient primate be so taught? Any chimpanzee, any extinct hominid? Logically, what organic difference /enables/ that insight or mind? What parturitive change might that difference impose? Logically, treating the text both seriously and skeptically, /could/ the organisms of the man and woman have been the same before and after the so-called “fall” into sin (cf. Immanuel Kant)? What “fruit” would the organisms have had to acquire, and what is the process of that acquisition called in modern English?
The textual questions of “nakedness”, pain, and “all that jazz” are too advanced for this forum.
How long is this logical “spur” from the Hot Word topic?
I present this train of inquiry all as food for thought and self-disciplined controversy, fruitful or not. (Quite a mixed metaphor, eh?)
PLEASE DELETE THIS SIGHT IMMEDIATELLY; THANKS
lo-f-ing-l who the hell cares if its an apple or not, who cares about some silly story about some silly god
i think they ate the apple because about the snake made entrest to them. they also got kick out of adam and eve garden
In the Korean-translated bible, it says that adam and eve bit into a fig… so I thought it was a fig all this time…
There was only ONE tree of the knowledge of good and evil in all the world. So, clearly, Eve and Adam didn’t eat an apple or a pomegranate or any other kind of fruit that exists elsewhere. That is, if the Scriptures are to be believed…
Ok so all of your stories seem pretty true but who really knows? Noone! But I believe that we should believe because I would rather believe in the Bible than nothing at all. When the end is here and if there is nothing I’m missing nothing but if I don’t believe and all the Bible is true then I will be where the unbelievers go…. So therefore I believe in the Bible and God and all of it. And I think that fig sounds efficient as the fruit.
Two ancient extra-Biblical texts, 3 Baruch and Apocalypse of Abraham, specifically identify the “tree” as the grape vine and the fruit as grapes. “The fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil” can then be interpreted as wine. English translations of these texts can be found in The Old Testament Pseudepigrapha, vol. 1 James H. Charlesworth, ed.
whittles out and apple and smokes marijuana in it
then gives it to husband
mmmmmmmmmmm thats good testament
ugg ugg me got question
did the snake speak english
it is an apple so stick with it people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It does not matter They sinned all we need to know.
It wasn’t an apple at all. I know I’m eve and I don’t like apples.!!
Here’s the deal….When you have “Direct connect” with the ALMIGHTY
and he said NO!? and you do it anyway? YOU get tossed on your arse!
THAT’S like the highest insult. It seems to me that since the beginning of time this mystery still hasn’t been unraveled I think it’s because
there’s so much more to this story that hasn’t yet been told. MAYBE Adam and Eve were reincarnated so GOD could give them another chance
to get it right because he’s a Loving GOD. Maybe Eve is the “holy grail” and existance rests on her sholders and she HAS to get it right
or all humanity will be exterminated!! Perhaps even stories like “The wizard of oz” as some meaning to what life is all about. There are
many mysteries of life. GOD is highly creative. WE WILL JUST HAVE TO SEE WHAT HE HAS INSTORE FOR US NEXT!
why does it matter what apple means in Latin? I’m fairly sure the book of genesis, and most the old testament were written in ancient Greek and or Hebrew??
Felicity Hunter is exactly right. Also if you will note in Genesis 5 (before the flood) people were living about 500 to 969 years (except Enoch who lived to be 365 and was taken away). After the flood (after people were permited to eat meat), in Genesis 11 the people’s life span also decreased rapidly (199 to 500 years).
actually what happened is the were in Heaven and were allowed to eat anything but a specific fruit and it can not be the apple at all started when “The Devil” was an angel but he refused to bow down to Adam and told God you made me out of fire and made him out of clay and God got mad and said you will go to Hell when the world ends so “The Devil” got angry and told Adam and Eve to eat the fruit so the could live in Heaven forever and they did God got mad and said did I not tell you to not eat out of the tree and they replied yes and God put them on earth and they have been dead for a long time so in conclusion IT IS NOT THE APPLE OK
To Desi: Hey desi just something interesting to note. At Rev. 12:9 it does name who was behind the snake appearing to talk. Which says it was satan. Your right in the fact some think that Satan is a literal snake, but he is actually a spirit person who cold manipulate a serpent to make it appear to talk. Much the same as ventriloquist.
Wow!! I’m just stunned by so much blatant ignorance on a single page!
Some very stupid comments here from Kyle, sandman,Saf,Bill,ShoNuf, Victoria,HieronymusFortesqueLickspittle,michaelflorida48,Desi,Anucat,
Israel,Gregg,PRM,CogentAsparagus, to name a few…Kudos to Phil Cose for a good answer.
1. While the Adam and Eve account may not agree with the THEORY of evolution, it matches what is known as scientific FACTS.
2. The Bible account plainly says..
Genesis 1:28 “Further, God blessed them and God said to them: “Be fruitful and become many and fill the earth..”
If God TOLD THEM to procreate, why would he then punish Eve with death for having sex, what sense does that make??? Secondly, when God made the prohibition, Adam was alone, Eve had not even been created!
3. Of course the Bible says the serpent is the Devil.
Revelation 12:9 “So down the great dragon was hurled, the ORIGINAL SERPENT, the one called DEVIL AND SATAN, who is misleading the entire inhabited earth..”
Revelation 20:2 “And he seized the dragon, the ORIGINAL SERPENT, who is the DEVIL AND SATAN, and bound him for a thousand years.”
4. Adam and Eve were real people in a real garden paradise, surrounded by trees, there is nothing to suggest that the fruit was a mere allegory. Other Bible writers, and Jesus himself, considered the Genesis account of Adam and Eve as a literal event.
I’m all for finding what this fruit is, really I am. Trouble is: the fruit could be anything… I know: overly said, but the truth.
The Garden is now said to be in current lower Iraq and the surrounding area below. So, the fruit would have to be something from that region, living around 6000years ago; there are multiple possiblities. The apple’s only ‘argument’ if you will, is the translation to evil… not convincing in my opinion.
Stating my opinion, argue if you feel you need to, but it’s out of my hands. <3 BYE!
STOP BLAMING EVE! Come on Women… stand up for yourselves. Thus the woman’s mistreated reputation begins with the biting of the fruit. THIS IS WHY THEY HAD WOMEN’S RIGHTS MOVEMENTS PEOPLE!!!!
GRRRAHHH! really people… who cares?
the Tree was significant, it was the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. God said for them to eat of anyother tree in the garden, including the TREE OF LIFE!, just don’t eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Satan tempted EVE to eat, Adam ate, the fall of man happened, and thats why Jesus had to die on the cross for the world to hopefully, get saved!
The problem wasn’t the fruit on the tree it was the pair on the ground. And I note again this has nothing to do with sex.
Also, Man’s greatest liberty(freedom) and downfall is the freedom of choice. God gave that to adam and eve in the garden, that is why we must choose to be dependant on Jesus Christ, and why they SHOULD HAVE not cared about that one tree and relied on GOD. Also Genesis 1: 26a – ‘And God said, Let US make man in our image, after our likeness:” that US there stands for the TRIbunal God-head (tri-meaning three) God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit.
God knew Adam and Eve would eat the fruit that was placed there. He knew they would sin, and yet He placed them on Earth anyway. The way I’ve always been taught this is that God wanted to love someone, and He wanted someone to love Him. Thus why he put the fruit there. He knew man would eat it and would become independent and knowing. God wants us to love Him because we actually love Him and not because we were forced into it. So, actually, He never intended for us to be His robots.
Picture it this way: As humans, we know the children we have will go against us. We know they will disobey and leave us, but we have them anyway. We know all this and yet we bring in another creature to this world because we love them before they’re even born.
So does it really matter what fruit it was? No. What matters is that even though we left Him, God loves us.
Mmmm… interestingly enough, it just so happens that I’m writing an essay on the “Garden of Eden”. I will post later.
Okay since we’re presenting our own personal theorems on the matter.
Thought I’d just like to give my take.
Adam and Eve was given a choice to live in pristine immortality or
ruin that beauty with the volition towards the adverse. Which was of course, to rob the cursed tree of knowledge of good and evil of its
Do remember that the buddha seeked enlightenment while meditating upon a
Bodhi tree. Bear in mind also that science is but a fleeting set of theories that despite proving the semantics of logic,it has constantly been marred by inaccuracy and constantly replaced by later ideas.
E.g Galileo’s belief that the world was round instead of being a flat
plane of existence where people fell off its edge.
As such, a tree might be way more spiritual then science has provided us in answers. No doubt the fruits, seeds, bark, leaves and photosynthesis of a tree are great indispensible provisions but they’re merely worldly.
What of the spiritual identity of the tree that goes largely unstudied by
conventional science? Just as buddha had seeked solace and erudition from the Bodhi. Perhaps it is this spiritual fruit that god had intended for adam and eve to avoid at all cost for it opened their eyes to pain, misery and a totally different dimention where shame and suffering was bare.
The serpent might have just been a distraction to keep Eve under that tree as she was exposed to the noxious effects of the ”fruit of enlightenment”.
JUST A POSSIBILITY!! CHEERS!
i didn’t eat the apple i made apple sauce…i like the texture more…
The whole Bible is full of metafors, similes, symbolism, and nothing should be taken absolutely literally.(Maybe the first 4 books of the New Testament)
All the stories in the books of the Bible are for us to learn by, and everything cannot possibly be taken literally.
Yes, some things are as written, but more than not are metafors and/or symbols of the lessons we are being taught. Remember, when the Bible was written, the languages were spoken and written differently, and when translated to English? That is a huge problem. If you are bilingual, you know that some words, phrases, and such are simply not translatable.
I was once told that in China, they learn English so they can talk to each other! Between Mandarin, Szechwan, Mongolian, and the other Altaic languages etc. being spoken within one country,I can understand why they would do so too!
But I believe way too many Christians take the Bible literally, which is kind of crazy to me. I mean, if you take the Bible literally, the Earth is only a little over 4000 years old, right? So you must take from the Bible what YOU get out of it, which in most cases is a good lesson. You may have to take it into your thought process for quite sometime before it makes sense to YOU, and it sometimes will, but sometimes it will never make sense to you. So don’t dwell on it too long or your head will explode! LOL
I know. I swear I thought my head would explode when trying to figure out the book of Revelation. Talk about symbolism! LOL
It is my favorite book because of just that. Talk about your head exploding!
But back to the subject that i have not even touched on- I don’t think we are talking about any fruit here, but rather a symbol, as usual.
The point is this- disobey God, be cut off. Everyone is looking at this the wrong way. The Garden was a place of innocence (no sex) therefor they could not procreate. The serpent was the father of all lies who’s greatest lie is making people believe he does not exist (satan). Our Heavenly Father has a plan for us. It started in the Garden of Eden. The Fall had to happen. We know pain, grief, suffering… but we could not fully understand joy and happiness without those. You need one to know the other. This did not exist in the Garden.
The best part about it all is that we are not punished for Adams transgression. We are accountable for ourselves. God’s plan of salvation gives us the ability to repent of our own sins and stand spotless before Him during judgement.
To those who believe this to be a fable, a bedtime story, you’re welcome to your beief. Myself and others have not shown any malice or hatred toward you. Please do not belittle or name call. It shows lack of education and/or mannars of a civilized human being (remember you’re not a monkey anymore for those who are evolutionists). But honestly, it’s bad form to attack someone who hasn’t provoked you and can’t really harm you if they had. If this is how you treat everyone who disagrees with how you feel then I truly feel sorry for you. Other than that I wish you every success and happiness in life.
I’m Russ, and I’m a Mormon. (no I don’t have horns, no I’ve never sacrificed anything -and it’s absurd to think that people actually believe that… come to think of it it’s absurd people believe we have horns too… maybe evolution is regressing back to the monkey. and no I’m not married and when i get married it will be to one woman. but i do love jello, only in cake though. have you ever had poke cake? it’s awesome.)
1) Adam & Eve had already had sex before “the fall”. Genesis 2:24
2) No where does it say that the serpent is Satan/Lucifer/etc. The only
contextual information, depending on which translation/version of the bible it is, is that the serpent was “the craftiest of all beasts”. If we’re to take it literally, the serpent is just another critter.
3) No matter which bible you’re reading, it’s a translation of a translation of a translation of a translation of (if you’re a believer) a story that God/Yaweh/Jehovah/etc told some guy with a beard, who probably passed it on orally a number of times, before it got written down. That’s not even counting the tampering by the various councils public & secret, by The Church (pre-dating protestantism), that decided what works & words the public should be privvy to.
4) Judging by the tone of the posts, there are quite a few who posted that count themselves as Christian- yet you TOTALLY got the literal meanings wrong. God only gave you guys ONE bound volume- one “book”. If you count yourself as a Christian- especially one espoused enough in your beliefs that you feel you can push them on others- I think you should learn that ONE BOOK word-for-word. Dontcha think God might be a little upset that you can quote various movies, books, and especially pundits, all day long, but you didn’t take time to learn the ONE friggin book? You know what other people TOLD you the book said, but didn’t know or understand it yourself. Pitiful
5) I’m not a bible-thumpin’ Christian. I just think bible-thumpin’ Christians should be held to a minimum standard of knowledge, since they often want to hold others to a certain standard of behavior/lifestyle/etc- usually with a big old plank in their eye
the pie wasn’t apple- it was cherry!
Apples taste good though….

Eve was framed.
ummmmm uhhhh… i think its a fruit cocktail =)
I was very surprised and disappointed that Dictionary.com would state that Adam & Eve partook of any fruit. This is just a parable with no relation to the truth. Come on Dictonary.com, the next thing you will tell us is that Jonah lived in condo in a whale’s stomach. Love your site but let us know when you’re differentiating between myth and reality.
the tree of the knowledge of good and bad is a symbol of god’s love and acknowledgment of Adam as his son. when god said to Adam “you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and bad or you will die,” he is saying in a form of litotes metaphor, that Adam is not required to prove his worth as a man, of life. Adam is not required to know what is good and bad to live. He is God’s son, created in God’s image, the whole earth and other creatures are made subject to him. He will rule over the earth, and nothing is required of him to prove his worth. when Eve was presented to Adam, all of creation that can reason knows that just as God is the father of all intelligent spirits beings in heaven, so will Adam be the father of all intelligent beings on earth.
someone thinks that Adam does not deserve to the father on earth. someone thinks he is more worthy. and decides to prove it.
It does not matter at all what the fruit was or wasn’t. Whether you believe that the story of Adam & Eve is fictional or real, the message is still profound. I believe the knowledge represents judgement, which is the opposite of love/God. The ability to see good and evil. Adam & Eve were to eat “freely” from ANY of the fruits except that of judgement. They chose judgement and as a result, felt shame. We need to quit pointing out what is good and evil in other people. Let them live their lives and let us live ours. We may default to judgement because of Eve’s decision, but I choose to live in freedom because of Jesus’ sacrifice. The purpose of the cross was to restore us to freedom. “Love your neighbor as yourself.” But instead, we deny Jesus and continue to judge others. Christians are ESPECIALLY guilty of this. It’s a symbol to learn from.
Who cares…it is only a fairytale after all. Much like a fable that has a moral to it’s story. This story was written to portray the consequences of disobeying “god’s” laws. pfst!
It’s all just a fairytale anyway. I don’t know why people get so worked up about it. No one argues this much over whether the gingerbread house was really made of ginger bread or cookie dough. It’s made up, so pick whatever fruit you like.
IT IS NOT MOST DEFINITELY NOT A FAIRYTALE, AND THIS ARTICLE IS A LIE
omg i believe in god but now this is starting to make me second guess and that’s not koooooooool
“If God really cared about Adam in order to NOT eat the fruit of knowledge God would’ve created a force-field in order to discourage Adam from trying.” You’re kidding, right? God created free will for a reason. A world with no free will would be pointless.
It cannot be understood by our own knowledge. We must seek help with the Holy Spirit, which is God as well. Interesting topic though..
anonymous!!!! THIS ARTICLE IS NOT A LIE!!! THIS IS VERY TRUE!!!
apples are tehdeil fruit

Another great info from Hot Word. This info about Apple just made me a fan of the blog!
Heres what i think is sooooooo funny after eve gave adam the fruit and god called them to him and when he asked them if they ate of the tree adam said its that woman you gave me. she brought it to me me and i took! so if you ask me adam was blaming eve for being a dumb butt!!!!
WOW , did not see this coming , thanks all comments , except the non believers. God is. We have a purpose which started in the book of Isiah 14:12-15. Everything happened for a reason. If we ( man ) lower than an angel obey God ( Jesus ) we will be stonger than satan. Yes, we failed in obedience , now we must operate in faith which requires even more obedience. It get’s rough , i like all fruit.
A lot of people on here are saying that science is meaningless (for a variety of reasons), but of course instantly assume that their religion is entirely true. But think for a second. Why do you believe? Because someone who came before you handed you some book and told you that it was the truth. And they only “knew” that through the same process. Quite honestly, science has refuted much of the bible, but only if you take it literally. I personally believe in many of the lessons, but you have to remember a few things. First, the bible often contradicts itself. Google it if you refuse to believe me. Second, the bible was not written by God. It was written by people who were supposedly inspired by God and then changed over thousands of years. And third, you have to remember the original audience for the bible. If God gave a scientific explanation for everything no one would have read it. People weren’t as advanced back then as they are today. So you might just feel like it’s true, and that’s fine. In most interpretations religion can do very little harm (actually now that I think about it there are a number of major exceptions to that). I attribute that feeling to a belief in God, and I can go with that without a concrete reason to. Otherwise free will would be nothing but an illusion, and I wouldn’t be doing much if I came to that conclusion. For those of you who find it hard to believe anything, you could say that whatever created the universe and everything that inhabits it- be that a God or something we cannot even begin to comprehend(I know, these categories are not mutually exclusive)- that is what God is. Or if there is no beginning and we just can’t begin to fathom that because we live in a world of beginnings and endings, then there doesn’t have to be a God. But if there’s a way, then there’s a will.
Mālum… mălum… Mooom! All fruit is evil! (I’ll just have the berries, please.
Btw, although figs are called fruit, they’re actually flowers. Although I doubt that Adam and Eve would have known that. After all, it wasn’t the Tree of Trivia.
i agree with phil cose. a round of applause for those thoughts.
yeah. the story of that forbidden fruit, the so-called “apple”, has nothing significant to do with a fruit.
it’s all about the test of obedience; obedience to God, in the story, that is.
ayat ken kapia,
If apple was the fruit, the paradise was in Kazakhstan, since this is where every single variety of apples originated
If I may, I would like to redirect this discussion to Hot Word’s original topic: the meaning of the word for the fruit we call “apple.” After all, this is a forum on etymology – not on religion or on spiritual beliefs. I want to open a dialogue here – not begin a new debate.
OK – I find it quite fascinating that “apple’s” roots so closely mimic a word that connotes evil. When an apple is cut in half (I believe along its horizontal axis – not the vertical) the center of the fruit resembles a pentagram; a symbol most commonly associated with Satan and devil worship. However, the apple itself is a Pagan symbol for the bounty of the autumn harvest (and if I’m not mistaken, the shape inside an apple cut along its horizontal axis was intentionally meant to signify this harvest); a celebration giving thanks for having food to eat (and it’s no mistake that the celebration typically occurred just before winter).
So – my thinking is that a pentagram has been erroneously misinterpreted as a representation of malevolence for two reasons: the first is that Paganism fell out of favor in the wake of the Church’s rise to power (i.e., anything Pagan was rendered wicked). The second prong of my theory harkens directly back to the origin of the word (i.e., the meaning of) “apple.”
Any thoughts about the basis for this supposition? I look forward to an exchange of ideas here.
I find it amusing that so many non-believers come onto a blog that is about Adam and Eve of their own free will and then complain about Christians shoving their beliefs down their throats. I feel sorry for these people because they’re either not smart enough to know that Adam and Eve are a Christian concept or they have no lives and nothing better to do than to come and trash other’s beliefs. Either way, it’s pathetic. I don’t have problems with people disagreeing with my beliefs but you’re not going to change anyone’s mind by just being rude and putting people down. That said, I agree that the actual type of fruit doesn’t matter and that the point was that by disobeying and betraying Him, the original sin was done. He did give us free will to choose to follow Him or not. I personally would be much happier to be considered His as opposed to being lumped in with the opposition. Either way you believe, the outcome will be the same – before all is said and done everyone will believe one way or another and I hope that as many people as possible can be saved before it is too late.
The tree of life is the apple tree, Adam’s apple. The tree of knowledge is the pine tree, the forbidden fruit is Eve’s pine-cone, you can eat the pine nuts. The clone of the two trees is the pineapple tree the fruit is a reminder to Adam not to loose his head, not to get mad which is a sin and not to get angry which is a curse or punishment. The Devil is the fly and Satan is the mosquito and Demons are worms that cause hallucinations that causes people to have delusions and a disturbed mind.
One more thing, if biting into some fruit really made them realize they were naked – we need to pass the fruit basket around again with all the nudity going on now a days. But when you have sex – c’mon – you KNOW you’re naked. Right? Right. No question about it.
The apple is one of Gods form of life ,the source of life is God him self .
The sorce of evel is the voice of devel in the form of serpent plus the apple

i really need to know about fruit adam ate
There had been neither a tree nor any fruits that they ate. Tree and Fruit were just decorative terms used in Holy Books. In reality they commited sinn by having sexual intercourse with temptation of Evil force, which is human nature.
In other words God creates reason for everything and they is nothing in this world without a reason.
I have a investigation where I show the true fruit of the Know Tree. I discovered trully evidences from the analisis of ancient hebrew sources and other semitic languages. Next I will publish this study.
it was no bloddy apple
it were bleedin spam

*Science often clashes with the bible.

@ the Questions;
Good questions, one also has to wonder what kind of loving father would subject his 2 innocent creations not to mention all mankind to such miseries, for simply disobeying him for the first time and taking a bite from the fruit, (I guess he preferred they remained ignorant) and if so, why not just erase their memories, why punish so harshly? And you are right, even before he gave them freewill he would have had to of known the outcome. Seems he was neither caring or forgiving, and if you don’t believe me read the old testament, I wouldn’t want this guy as my father.
Sure there are scientist that believe, some people having been indoctrinated into a religious mindset at an early age have a very hard time thinking logically and rationally about an invisible magic man in the sky, and many will never find the strength to unshackle themselves from that deluded mindset.
That being said, we are all brothers and sisters on this planet and should care for and respect one another regardless of our personal beliefs. PEACE!
GOD didn’t tell them to eat that apple. It was an alien. Humans are the product of aliens, and the aliens told the first humans, Adam and Eve, not to become informed. More powerful than they. God wouldn’t forbid it’s creation knowledge.
the god said in QURAN to ADAM and his wife don’t eat from this tree but
the devil cheat them and order eat to become angles just they eat sexual organs become clear they try to cover by pieces and paper of trees then the god send them to the earth and promise if they do good in the life they will back again the the god aden ( no mention the kind of the tree)
If the apple contained knowledge, how was Eve supposed to know the difference between write and wrong before eating the “apple”?
the bible has been translated to a lot of languages. maybe they got the wrong translation (i didn’t mean all translated bibles) and ended up on using the apple as the forbidden fruit. but in Filipino translation, we did not use the tagalog term which is “mansanas”, we just use “prutas” which is fruit in English.
@question: actually, science shouldn’t disagree what is written in the bible.
Q: Who gave wisdom and knowledge to that scientists?
Am really confused. what fruit can make you realize that you are naked after eating it? What fruit can make you have a child after being eaten? as you read the book of Genesis, it seems we have preoccupied minds that are contaminated with evil. The sin Adam and Eve committed was actually the failure to obey and follow God’s instruction. The fruit is literally used in that passage. Don’t think it was sex because those guys were allowed to multiply and have many children even before they ate the fruit.
whan the bible says about the fruit of adam & eve was it realy fruit ?,and how could the fruit give us this a kind of knowledge and was GOD care for the fruit any fruit which we can easly get them from the market? no The serpent brought idea to the women and she eat , the idea that was to the lucifer
How you have fallen from heaven,
morning star, son of the dawn!
You have been cast down to the earth,
you who once laid low the nations!
You said in your heart,
“I will ascend to the heavens;
I will raise my throne
above the stars of God;
I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly,
on the utmost heights of Mount Zaphon.[a]
I will ascend above the tops of the clouds;
I will make myself like the Most High.”
But you are brought down to the realm of the dead,
to the depths of the pit.
“On either side of the river, is the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, producing its fruit each month; and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.” Rev. 22:2
We should just read with a pre-disposition to what it says. What the fruit was the fruit still is and eating of the fruit causes us to produce perpetual death. Death is the an experience that none of us can escape, no not one. The Book Game Changer explains this very clearly I would suggest those who really want to know what the fruit is read the book.
