Today, 11/11, is the 315th day of the year. It’s also Veterans Day, a federal holiday honoring all military veterans.
The holiday marks the anniversary of the 1918 signing of the Armistice, which took place in a railway carriage, between the Allies and Germany. This event marked the end of fighting on the Western Front in the First World War. The signing took place at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.
In other parts of the world, the day is celebrated as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day.
11:11 is also a phenomenon of numerology, the notion that numbers hold some intrinsic value beyond their significance as symbols of quantity. A popular belief holds that the combination “11:11″ appears on clocks with too great a frequency to be coincidence. In that spirit, let’s look at what else happened on this day in history and see if we can draw any conclusions beyond mere coincidence:
In 1620, the Mayflower Compact, the first governing document of the Plymouth Colony, was signed near Cape Cod.
Over two hundred years later, in 1889, Washington was admitted as the 42nd U.S. State.
In 1926, the legendary Route 66 was established.
Six years ago on this date, the Palestine Liberation Organization confirmed Yasser Arafat’s death, but did not identify the cause. Shortly after, Mahmoud Abbas was elected chairman of the PLO.
its just a case of making numbers fit ie also on that day 11yrs ago my 11yr old boy fell of his 11yr old bike outside our house number 11!
double eleven, not 007, is there oo11 at MI6?
Umm…not that incredible a combination then.
And surely 11:11 will appear on a clock only as often as any other combination of numbers i.e. twice a day?
A rather underwhelming post, if I may say so.
Very good article (Thanks) about the historical date related to 11-11 and its value in numerology. My basic learning of numerology, any date has its own positive traits and negative traits in term of human personality referred to their birth date.
For those people with their birth date of 11; POSITIVE TRAITS: idealistic, imaginative, intuitive, persuasive, and spiritual. NEGATIVE TRAITS: laziness, sarcastic, sloth, procrastination, and temperamental.
Whoa. I don’t think it’s numerology, but believe me (for those who disagree) there are some insane coincidences out there–but they only mean more if we decide to foolishly analyze it forever. Happy Eleventeenth!
Love it! Thanks dictionary.com.
useful information thanks!
10.10 was a popular phrase in the history of clocks.
perchance it is time for 11.11 combination.

i dont think this has a meaning to this date!! it just november and they day 11
That’s quite a stretch to establish the significance of the date by saying that’s when Leonardo DiCaprio was born.
There was also excatly 11 comments, too!
This is absolutely one of the stupidest dictionary.com posts I’ve ever seen. Good grief. Leonardo diCaprio. Dictionary.com used to have some very interesting and useful information, but has fallen victim to the current fascination with celebrities and pop culture.
And how many times does 11:11 show up on a clock every day? Twice!!! That’s it. “…the combination “11:11″ appears on clocks with too great a frequency to be coincidence.” The combination 11:11 shows up twice a day – it is especially noticed, however, because it is a distinctive combination and easily remembered.
OMG it WAS eleven comments but I just ruined it by putting on this comment
Wow this is pretty stupid i don’t see why Leonardo DiCaprio has any thing to do with this and as you all said 11:11 only shows up twice a day.
Not interesting what so every but it’s still fun to read there obvious failure right on the front page.;)
November 11 (veteran’s day) is also pepero day in korea. pepero is a chocolate covered stick. it is shaped in the form of a line. pepero day was made to give pepero to the person that u like. On that day, you go out with the person that u like and give them pepero. Isnt that cool? Pepero day is on November 11th because november 11th is 11.11. and since pepero is shaped like a line just like the number 11, it is made on that day.
I do happen to see 11:11 on the clock a lot, but that’s because I look for it. Someone told me once that when the clock hits 11:11, you are supposed to make a wish, so naturally I notice it more often. Of course 11:11 comes up twice on the clock each day just like every other time, but when you are looking for a correlation, most times you will find one.
For instance, i notice that 11 people have liked this page on fb
The writer didn’t mean, how many times per day 11:11 is on a clock; they are talking about the occurrence of people looking at a clock for the first time in many hours, or the first time that day and seeing 11:11 very often.
For those who don’t experience this, it is easy to brush off as any number of things (no pun intended). I only started noticing 11:11 after a friend mentioned it; but six years ago, after a strange event, it changed to 11:10 which I now see, not only on clocks, but various other places.
We aren’t all here to learn the same lessons, therefore, we aren’t all presented with the same material.
The post should read “A popular belief holds that the combination “11:11″ is noticed on clocks by people with too great a frequency to be coincidence.” @ Leigh, you are correct, it is noticed because it is distinctive and easily remembered. I used to freak out when I woke up frequently at 3 am, the so-called witching hour, until I realized that it was DST and the witching hour had already passed!
its also my birthday 11 11 and my mom went into laber at 11
I gather that the day and the time for the signing of the armistace was chosen by the French (the victors) to humiliate the Germans (the losers) of WWI: the day is St Martin of Tours’s Day (he is, of course one of the French parton saints). By making the signing occur on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month the French were hammering home the point that it was they who were victorious.
* armistice. Sorry, can’t spell today.
I agree that this is a somewhat ridiculous column. You can take almost any day of the year, do some research, and I’m sure you’ll find a whole lot of coincidences. As for the time 11:11, it’s really only more noticeable because it’s the only time of day that can have 4 of the same digits and it’s linear form. Here’s another peculiarity about digital clocks; start becoming cognizant of how often the clock is flashing your birthday and you’ll be amazed at how often it occurs. Example; my birthday is November 23rd and it seems every other time I look at a digital clock it’s 11:23. Try it!
For the past nine years, I’ve noticed the combination 09:11 more than any other.
What’s not known about 11.11.1918 is that generals at war knew about the Armistice 6 hours earlier and most of them kept sending soldiers to fight. Over a thousand soldiers died on that day enen seconds before the 11th hour.
i thought that in numerology all numbers with two digits are reduced to a single digit, so 11:11 would actually be 2:2 or simplified again to the number 4?
It’s probably all Greek to the Geek. . .
Hmm, that does seem like an inconsistency in numerology. Says something, doesn’t it?
who cares!?,… nonsense article
Maybe “we” should all take a closer look at the French and their arrogance as it relates to Roberts accusations of the Allies rubbing it in with such an “the inevitable hour” It seems that humility would have served mankind much better after such a long bloody event. Of course those who were at the top (a few men) who orchestrated this thing had a different field of view and didn’t quiet get into the horrors of trench warfare; did they? Here’s an invitation into a different sphere of thinking regarding war and how the philosophy “for” peace has been trampled on ever since and to the continuation of these few men who boast of their power. “we” have all suffered because of a few men and their “pomp of power” and they nor their own will never know the cold edge of a sward or the hot sting of a bullet; to wit
“The Six Months That Changed The World” Youtube or the Book
“The boast of heraldry, the pomp of power,
And all that beauty, all that wealth e’er gave,
Awaits alike the inevitable hour:
The paths of glory lead but to the grave.”
There are 365 days in the usual year. If you want to count the possible significant events (assuming only one significant event occurs on any day) since the year 0000 until Dec 31, 2010…then there are a possible 733,650 events that could have occurred worldwide. Now multiply that by the number of countries, provinces, or people in the world on any given day and there are trillions of possible significant events. Eleven does not seem that significant to me, except that my wife was born on the 11th!!! Now that is SIGNIFICANT….
yeah how do all of those situations in history go together to prove this point makes no sense to me.
I happen to notice the clock reads 12:34 quite often when I notice the time during the day. Anyone else experience this? 11/11, 12/12 every year a new Phenomenon!
It is all Chopsticks! see U@11 on 11/11/11.
1-11-11 has 5 ones. It will be beat by 11-11-11 which will have 6. How much is “eleventeen” anyway? I heard it from my grandson, but didn’t ask him. I didn’t want to change his mind that – Grandpas know everythingl
It’s my birthday and 11 is always my lucky number. How coincidence that everything I do deal with 1, like my DOB is 11/11/1987. The year starts with 1, and 9-8=1, 8-7=1 ..
Actually, 11:11 appears 48 times each day. Think about it.
How does it appear 48 times each day. I can only think of 24.
II:II also happens to be the mayan symbol for change!
STOP with the phyco pathically nonsence this is absolute rubbish is just mere concidence turned into commerical gain.
oh and I am writing this post at 2:45 pm I posted the previous post at 2:44p.m. The time that is listed in the previous post is inccorect for people who want to study the trend of time people posted. The website is playing games.
i am going to turn 14
i was born ‘97
add them together and what do you get???
u try it
11:11:11 a good day or a bad day depends on who is viewing the day, 7 billion of us now and I would imagine a few are having a good day and some a bad day, I’m in the half having a shitty day, we just broke up, this time for good I’m sure. So 11:11:11 will be remembered by me as a not so good day, I will try not to remember this day for sure.
>A popular belief holds that the combination “11:11″ appears on clocks with too great a frequency to be coincidence.<
For the dithering idiots whose comments refer to the times a day that 11:11 appears on clocks, it is not a reference to that aspect of appearance. It is in reference to printed (or in some otherwise depicted) images of a clock face showing the time 11:11 as a digital image (it is impossible for a standard mechanical clock to ever show a time as 11:11—that would be a time of five minutes until the eleventh hour and the gears of the clock itself prohibit it.). It has no more significance than the as frequent, if not more so, 8:08 imagery used in illustrations of digital clocks. Why either image seems to be selected by artists and advertising illustrators is a matter of pure conjecture. One thing everyone should consider: pure conjecture is, in and of itself, a form of divination; divination is a sin in God's eyes. God would much prefer you stick with the truths of reality and stop wasting your life's precious time quibbling over bs.
>How much is “eleventeen” anyway?<
Eleventeen is a Liberal Damnfools way of expressing eleven. Liberal Damnfools have an innate propensity for changing words, rules, and definitions to fit their own Damnfool ways and opinions. Liberal Damnfools are at constant odds with God's reality. Grandparents are just as ignorant as everyone else, and those that won't admit it to themselves first will always lie to everyone else second. Your attitude toward considering yourself as infallible is a Damnfool pathological liar's mental illness. Straighten yourself out and straighten the kid out on the truth and stop lying to him.
Ok, it is rather interesting, all these coincidences, but really! Yesterday was 10/11/12, did anyone post an article about it? No! We’re all very happy and glad that it’s Veterans/Remembrance Day, but let’s remember it for just that, Remembrance Day. And leave 11 alone, its pathetic behaviour to distort the weird science of coincidence like that. BTW, tomorrow’s 12/11/12, hip hip hooray! #sarcastic
Here are a couple more significant events that happened on Nov 11.
In 1965, Prime Minister Ian Smith made the Unilateral Declaration of Independence of Rhodesia from Britain, which led to a liberation struggle that saw the birth of Zimbabwe in 1980 April 18. (Anyone want to try doing something with 4/18?)
Ten years to the day after the UDI, in Australia, the Governor-General (the Queen’s representative) fired the duly elected government of E Gough Whitlam in what is referred to as the constitutional crisis. When the proclamation was read, ending with “God save the Queen,” Whitlam’s response was “Well may we say ‘God save the Queen,’ because nothing will save the Governor-General.”
My bday is 11/07 and I always seem to se 11:07 on our clock but that’s ptobs coz I just remember it
